Interesting plot and idea! I hope you do the execution well. Be careful while making the difficulty factor and curve in these kind of levels, because you can end up making it arbitrarily hard because of the level proposal, which can lead for frustration. To avoid that, I'd suggest you making more usage of traps -- not the ones that kills the player but might hurt or scare him. Sprite design can help during the process, seeing you can have up to 20 of them on screen. Creativity and balance is fundamental for this.
Oh and by the way, in the first two screenshots I think the red/wine building color might blend with the FG border, so I suggest making your FG shift more to the yellow and gray, just a bit like SMW spiky pencil(?). Oh and of course, careful with those pencils! They can make your level much more annoying than can you imagine.
