I’ve had a great idea for an overworld this year.

The main map is basically a city where you can access certain buildings. In the buildings are hotel rooms that contain beds, these beds are the levels. Abstract levels would be best suited here.

The city map will obviously contain levels on the outside too, because there are many outdoor city levels this year. You can also exit the city to enter the fields & woods, which is where all the forest & grassland levels would be.

The worst world this year could be a sewer accessed from the city. And I guess the best world could be that you take shrooms from the woods.

So that’s it for now. Admittedly these ideas could use some polish, but it’s just ideas at this point so it doesn’t matter.

Thoughts?

Hi.
I actually like the idea, since it could feel pretty postmodern if pulled off right, and seeing it's the 10th VLDC, why not go for something quite impressive?

Though on the other hand, it seems it would take quite the effort to create graphically, especially in the style of vanilla.

Also, there's the possibility many will agree that a city setting doesn't best capture an abstract world or a worst world than a metaphysical or jokey submap. Just my two cents.
Considering the map designing is a contest, restrictive concepts are probably not a good idea, but I suppose the worlds could be arranged in such a way designing something like that is possible.

I'm glad you like the idea. And yeah, I agree that it would be difficult to implement. I was mainly just spewing my thoughts.

The abstract levels would fit in the rooms because dreams are usually abstract themselves.

I suppose, but because the map design gets a contest, it means it could maybe become a concept for at least one of the entries. Though I guess that's easier said than done.

Hi.

Imagine a SMBX-style hub level instead of an overworld. I don't actually want to imagine this.

I've made vocal that I think the best way to do the OW contest this year is to let the contestants themselves decide what world and themes to create within the overworld, and where to place the levels.
Each contestant would have to submit a full overworld and not just one map, but most of them did that anyway.
As a result, users would vote for the entire overworld and not on a per-map basis as well.

That'd give the people entering the contest a lot more freedom to experiment and make something really cool for this year's overworld.
While we're posting overworld ideas, I do have an idea for what we could do with some of those generic castle and forest levels.

I was thinking we could combine the two Forest and Castle themes, well, most of them, and make the whole world a "Medieval" theme, as Medieval fantasies and themes, are usually held in kingdoms that are all around in forests, mountains, and grasslands. And, we already have enough Mountain and Grassland themes to have them be in their own world...Maybe not Mountain.

So yeah, while it is too early to tell what we'll do with each level arranged in which world theme, I figured we could combine a generic world theme that's been consistent over the VLDC years with a not-so generic theme. Forest/Castle, aka "Medieval". I already have a few levels in mind for this theme, including but are not limited to the following...

-Spiny's Trees
-Volcastle
-Afterburner Castle
-VERY DANGER LIFTS
-The Night Garden
-Luks' Unnamed level
-Umbral Waltz

So, how does everyone else feel about the idea?

That's what happened with the 7th & 8th one. Only the 9th one had the individual map voting, and even then everyone basically picked the entire fancy ASM overworld. Good idea though.

Hi.
Maybe there could be a muncher that you can touch that can make mario get a fake game over and send him to the worst world.

You know what they say. All toasters, toast toast.

would be a fantastic concept for the worst world in all honesty

Yeah, I agree it would help if we got some other really bad memes for the Worst World other than just...you know... Floating Munchers... That Muncher taking Mario to Worst World is pretty clever, too, certainly makes more sense than just a star warp, which shouldn't even exist for the Worst World. In my opinion, it should only fit a Sky, or Space World, or the Best World, so it actually makes sense. Other memes could be "Doge", "Nice", "Pepe the Frog", "Deal With It", etc.

Oh, and reposting this for convinience.

I'd rather not have a meme world

It'd just end up hella unfunny

Contrary to pop cult memes, the munchers were actually funny for being spontaneous, and in context with an SMW hack. They made several LP'ers crack up when they checked VLDC 9's Worst World.

Basically, what lion said.
I still would prefer we at least do something a little different for the worst world. Let's think outside the "Floating Munchers" box. We've done that for all the VLDC's ever since 7. No denying 9 was the best, but come on, don't you think we should try something new for the Worst World other than just Floating Munchers?

No one is suggesting to keep the munchers. We're just saying having everyday memes for VLDC X's worst world would be a terrible idea.

Do you have a better idea?

You don't really need to have another idea in place to say one idea is bad. Meme world is bad idea.

Also those memes are so 2014 lol
