Again, you're not wrong, but this really isn't the place for showing off all you can do with ASM, or at least that's what I think. Why don't we just host more ASM contests or something? That way people can show off what they do without it being a massive contradiction to the project they're contributing to.
This is a very weird line of thought to begin with. When was the VLDC9 overworld an ASM showcase? All the ASM in it was custom tailored to fit the exact needs our designers had, it's not a dumping ground for ASM we had lying around or wanted to make. It's a part of the thing as much as the design itself is, yet I haven't seen you call it a design showcase anywhere
This is how every game in existance is made, how every game is developed.

And you're absolutely right, VLDC9's overworld did keep things interesting, but again... well, you know what I'm gonna say by now.
You've conceded like every point you've made by now, so I'm not sure what you were planning to say to be honest...

TBH the VLDC overworld contest is the only one where it's going to be worth submitting an entry with ASM anyway, in a separate overworld contest, all the work would go to waste by default unless you decided to build a hack out of it after, but for VLDC you're actually competing for something special you know?
In that regard, it would make more sense to have an extra vanilla overworld contest or something like that if there really was that much demand for it, rather than limit what can be done for vldc's overworld
Yeah, nobody, me included, would bother wasting this much time on an overworld if it didn't already have a place to be used. Same reason why a lot of ASMers won't take requests for anything that doesn't already have considerable progress.
But yeah, issue with the "muh no ASM" complains is already that VLDCX will focus on being the best VLDC to date rather than adding weird limitations to the non-contest portion, sorry.
You can complain about it, but you said yourself that you already know a great overworld would win over one that doesn't use ASM in a voting, so you should realized that even if your point was super duper valid it wouldn't be the better option.
One thing I think could be neat though is that we hold the contest as usual, but after it's gone through the whole site can make suggestions for improvements and any ASM can be added thereafter.
That way people who are not ASM savvy (because I realize that this is definitely a smaller subset of the community than we have good designers) can simply mark where they would like to have a sprite on their map instead of actually having to code it and it would then be placed there. Same goes for HDMA effects and what have you.
To help visualize it, static versions of the sprites they'd want there could be added as placeholders too I guess, so it doesn't look empty in the voting.
Reason I'm suggesting this is cause I'd like to see people who don't have the contacts to just get a 10 people team to work on their ideas day-in day-out actually have a chance in the contest, and because that way I wouldn't have to commit to anything LOL
Changing the maps after they've already won might be a problem considering the ego of some of our more talented members, but if it's made clear from the start they can't say anything about it I suppose.
