Agreed. I never thought of it that way, this makes a lot of sense now.

Again, you're not wrong, but this really isn't the place for showing off all you can do with ASM, or at least that's what I think. Why don't we just host more ASM contests or something? That way people can show off what they do without it being a massive contradiction to the project they're contributing to.

This is a very weird line of thought to begin with. When was the VLDC9 overworld an ASM showcase? All the ASM in it was custom tailored to fit the exact needs our designers had, it's not a dumping ground for ASM we had lying around or wanted to make. It's a part of the thing as much as the design itself is, yet I haven't seen you call it a design showcase anywhere #wario{-_-?}
This is how every game in existance is made, how every game is developed.

And you're absolutely right, VLDC9's overworld did keep things interesting, but again... well, you know what I'm gonna say by now.

You've conceded like every point you've made by now, so I'm not sure what you were planning to say to be honest...

TBH the VLDC overworld contest is the only one where it's going to be worth submitting an entry with ASM anyway, in a separate overworld contest, all the work would go to waste by default unless you decided to build a hack out of it after, but for VLDC you're actually competing for something special you know?
In that regard, it would make more sense to have an extra vanilla overworld contest or something like that if there really was that much demand for it, rather than limit what can be done for vldc's overworld

Yeah, nobody, me included, would bother wasting this much time on an overworld if it didn't already have a place to be used. Same reason why a lot of ASMers won't take requests for anything that doesn't already have considerable progress.

But yeah, issue with the "muh no ASM" complains is already that VLDCX will focus on being the best VLDC to date rather than adding weird limitations to the non-contest portion, sorry.
You can complain about it, but you said yourself that you already know a great overworld would win over one that doesn't use ASM in a voting, so you should realized that even if your point was super duper valid it wouldn't be the better option.

One thing I think could be neat though is that we hold the contest as usual, but after it's gone through the whole site can make suggestions for improvements and any ASM can be added thereafter.
That way people who are not ASM savvy (because I realize that this is definitely a smaller subset of the community than we have good designers) can simply mark where they would like to have a sprite on their map instead of actually having to code it and it would then be placed there. Same goes for HDMA effects and what have you.
To help visualize it, static versions of the sprites they'd want there could be added as placeholders too I guess, so it doesn't look empty in the voting.
Reason I'm suggesting this is cause I'd like to see people who don't have the contacts to just get a 10 people team to work on their ideas day-in day-out actually have a chance in the contest, and because that way I wouldn't have to commit to anything LOL

Changing the maps after they've already won might be a problem considering the ego of some of our more talented members, but if it's made clear from the start they can't say anything about it I suppose.

Wow it's almost like it's the whole reason the overworld contest was integrated to VLDC in the first place!! #wario{-_-?}#wario{-_-?}#wario{-_-?}

Also just reminding that assembling teams for a competition would be really cool and, considering every contest in this site is composed by individual people competing with each other, unique. I actually don't think it's that hard to find people willing to work with you, provided you have at least 1 skill (pretty much my case last year, actually, since I'm not really a map designer - which would've been a second skill - and wouldn't even have made the abstract map if koop hadn't bailed out of it due to a lack of inspiration).

I called it an ASM showcase because every map had some gimmicky ASM feature in it. The design of the map was good for sure, but it was the little gimmicky things like the springboard or the hang glider that actually stood out to me, which I personally think it shouldn't given that this is a vanilla contest.

Well I haven't been backpedaling this whole time. People simply offered their own perspectives that I thought made sense and agreed with on some degree, but I still hold most of the opinions I held in the first place. The only reason it looks like I'm trying to back out of this is because I'd rather not keep talking about this any further because its gone on long enough and I'm sure there are other people who have some legitimate ideas for the overworld maps.

Plus it would look silly if I just keep repeating the words "this is a vanilla contest" more than I already have.

That's completely understandable, and I have no problem with people putting as much effort into the maps as possible, but at the same time I would rather not have a bunch of over the top ASM gimmicks on the maps that drag on for too long (see: VLDC9 hang glide).
If we end up deciding to do a contest (which seems to most likely be the case) then we will not pose any restrictions to the design of the maps at all. The "Vanilla" aspect is only applied to the contest and there is no valid reason to limit the quality of the collab side, especially when we want VLDCX to be the best collab possible. There's no reason to keep debating about this.
@leod I actually really like that idea. I for one wasn't going to bother participating cause I figured you guys could make a super awesome overworld again anyway, but I also don't have the ASM skills to make my ideas come to fruition. I know a lot of talented individuals in the creativity department but most of us lack the ASM skills to even slightly compete with the "main overworld squad" so it would definitely be interesting to have static concept sprites, and then make it happen later. Of course, that would also downplay the skills of those who can make super impressive sprites. But then again, it is an overworld contest, and not an ASM contest.
I'm okay with sprites and ASM being used to enhance the overworld, but I'm leaning toward it being an open collaboration instead of a contest. As we saw in the last VLDC, the large group that worked on the maps with the fancy sprites were far more popular than any of the others. There's not much point in having a contest if one is clearly superior when compared to the others. And unlike the Vanilla Level Design Contest itself, the losing entries don't get included, which essentially makes their efforts wasted. If it were to be a contest, then I think restricting how many people can work together would lead to more evenly matched overworlds. (But again, I'm leaning toward the former.)

I'm pretty sure it was said many times before that the "vanilla contest" ends as soon as level judgement is out. The compilation hack has nothing to do with it...

Also we reached the point where the definition of vanilla term differs from people to people, so you claim there shouldn't be any ASM in a vanilla contest, yet we built all our levels based off a rom with many bugfix patches which weren't part of the original smw.
ladies, no need for debates

asm or not, it's pretty obvious I'm gonna win the OW contest don't even bother competing against this master

Also here's the sprite system. Will probably make a bigger post when the overworld contest actually happens, but for now people can get acquainted with it I suppose.

The next thing it should display is Hell, yes, the typical red land inside a volcano with lava, featuring Munchers, and a giant red Muncher with horns and a goatee...

As a Bonus Cake, Mario in the submap would have this face...

Just on that screen, like he is having a bad time, while outside in other maps, he would have his normal expression of the map screens.

I already posted this in the Discussions and Questions thread, but I put it here too because reasons.
