Custom sprites? Everyone's doing it!

Cataquack from Super Mario Sunshine

Not 100% finished, but presentable. The extra bit determines whether it's a blue or red Cataquack.

Right now if you jump on Red Cataquack, you get launched, but don't take damage. Not sure if I should leave this as is or make Mario take damage regardless of where red hits him. I don't have my copy of Sunshine readily available, so if someone could tell me which is closer to his behavior in the actual game, I'll decide based on that.

I also still need to add a bit of code to prevent Cataquack from running off cliffs and temporarily disable it chasing Mario after walking into a wall, ledge, or another sprite.

There are also two minor bugs I've noticed. First, if you're riding Yoshi, you lose him even if the blue one touches you. Really not sure why... I disabled normal interaction and blue never damages Mario. If anyone has ideas for how to fix that, please let me know.

Secondly, Mario's jump height depends on whether or not you're holding down the jump button. In that video, I had it held down every time I was thrown. Still trying to look into a way to force the sprite into thinking the jump button is held down whenever Mario is thrown.

Just a normal sprite. I don't particularly care for dynamic sprites so I never bothered learning to code those.

Red Cataquacks always hurt Mario. Blue ones only hurt Mario if he touches them directly (I assume when they're stunned), but that only applied to Sunshine. In Galaxy, they can't (directly) harm him. In Galaxy, they would also be defeated if they fell into water (but would come back anyway seconds later, but details, details...) It's a nice sprite either way. More enemies from 3D Mario games need to find their way into SMW anyway.

That's a pretty decent one, actually. It has fluent animations and even palette swapping when hit. A lot of people forget that. Still you should also add a sound effect when dealt damage. And probably he could take a few less hits (unless he is intended as a boss or something like that).

Also, tonight I was bored. I only intended to do the Ninji, but I added that... stupid thing afterwards. I couldn't stop laughing at what I've done. Not impressive, but still worth a watch!

You should make it spawn a block uppon death though, so that the Ball 'n Chain doesn't end up in mid-air.

I don't have to anymore. Now, the JSR that handles the Bn'C happens before the "sprite state 8" check (but after the "sprites frozen check, of course) so the Ninji brings the Ball n' Chain with him in the lava!

Also, he now has 3 hits and flashes when hurt. I was able to disable the Ball n' Chain's interaction while the Ninji was flashing, but I couldn't make it actually flash, it was glitching out.

It could have been, but now with 3 hits he's way too hard for a midboss. I'm able to beat it easily with 6 hearts, but keep in mind that this is at the end of the world, so you lost hearts beforehand. It can be easy or hard depending on how well you did in the levels!
I am working on a cannoneer koopa as my first official sprite. It faces left or right based on extra bit, and will jump in shock if Mario approaches it. If killed, the cannon stops firing. So far, I am almost finished with the graphics routine. The rest I am not sure about. I will post pics in the next day or two.

Seeing as I've always wanted to post something in here and just uploaded a little patch, I thought, why not now?

So, I made a simple patch which displays the follwing after having collected all the yoshi coins


I've always hated how the coins just disappear after havong collected +5 of them.
This message will also appear if you reenter the level.

I don't know how this ended up being almost 30 freaking minutes long.
