@Koops: Your title screen is simple, but good Koops. However, edit's patch seems to bring the NIntendo title screen to the ultimate level(only HDMA would make it even epicer). And speaking of that edit, I tried your patch and I got an epic result:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-M0iPL7h1qk?fs=1&hl=ro_RO"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-M0iPL7h1qk?fs=1&hl=ro_RO" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
I did this, just to show that it works.
I got this after a few tries. Edit, you should metion that if you try to set the freespace somewhere over $600000(SNES Address), it will crash.
I do believe the hack mods will be bowing down to you in the near future. Unexpected end tag (</param>) at 210, expected </div> Unexpected end tag (</param>) at 261, expected </div> Unexpected end tag (</param>) at 316, expected </div> Unexpected end tag (</embed>) at 497, expected </div> Unexpected end tag (</object>) at 506, expected </div>
Yeah, basically all the ASM crap is the point of this, it's all the stuff I didn't get to showoff when I made it for the sake of secrecy, but now it's all here for people to see. Yep.
What's here?
The obvious:
Net power with Kirby type feel, let's you gain powers from enemies
Custom Kirby boss
New status bar
Health patch
Non-obvious:
Skips the title screen entirely
Status bar is on layer 2
Has 18 palettes, which includes the 2 dedicated explicitly for the status bar that aren't used anywhere else
When you die, you just appear back at the beginning of the level.
HDMA brightness gradient showing you are near the bottom of the screen.
Custom pause screen (It's when the level goes greyscale within the boss.
I think that's it really, I'll probably drop a zip containing the raw ASM files (i.e. useless to anyone ASM files) in my profile on SMWC if you are at all interested in looking at it. I also may release a normal mario compatible version of the kirby sprite.
Yeah, even though we had to rush this and so will place poorly in the contest, I still feel good about how much I learned (VRAM, DMA, cgram, etc) so it was still worth it.
Yeah that's pretty frickin' awesome.
That's a very very very nice concept! :OMy blog. I could post stuff now and then
Perhaps you should consider making the powerups a little more balanced, though =P

Balanced? As in...
The lakitu powerup really doesn't looks like it's worth it =/
The aiming looks annoying and not as easy to use as the koopa or monty mole, and especially not as the wind magic thingy.
And sure, you managed to kill two chucks at once with it, but wouldn't you be able to kill all of them if you ground-pounded the middle one?(if no, then I guess it does have it's pros)
And am I mistaken, or are you invincible while under the ground as a monty mole?
Point of the lakitu is that it lets you kill enemies above you, no other power does that. And the magic power is essentially uselss at close range, since it takes 2 shots to actually kill anything, for instance, killing one of those lakitus with the magic power when you are close up will spawn a green koopa, which will hit you before you have a chance to shoot it again. Besides, not all powers can be equal. For instance, Kirby Bomb power clearly has quite an advantage over, say, beam power, because it
A) Has a longer range
B) Does more damge
Yet that's perfectly acceptable.
And yes, you are invincible while underground as the mole.
I think the Lakitu powerup should have the Princess Peach float from SMB2. That would help put it in context and give you an incentive to have it (aside from being able to kill enemies above you.)

I was planning on that, just didn't have the time for it.
