Saph and the Great Rebellion *C3 UPDATE*

Standard

So, as many of you know, I've been hacking for a couple of years now, and have been a long time member. However, it is painfully obvious that I have a grand total of 0 completed projects to show for all my work. Why? because I suffer the same disease that most of us hackers are afflicted by: I can't seem to work on the same project for too long.

HOWEVER, I have finally pushed myself to go through with a project for once, and so I proudly announce what is to be my very first hack release: Saph and the Great Rebellion.

When I decided I wanted to start a new project, I had to think long and hard; if I wanted to make a hack that people would want to play, I'd need to create something that no one has thought of before. In today's hacking world, that is a very hard task indeed. However, I soon realized that one simple change to the fundamental SMW forumula would instantly seperate this hack from every other hack that's out there. But I'll get to all that in a minute.

First of all, the premise is this: Bowser's been having some financial cutbacks lately, and cannot support such a massive army anymore. So, he's had to lay off the entire Buzzy Beetle division. This causes great anger to the Buzzies, and so they go on strike, vowing to take on Bowser himself and earn their jobs back!

Now, here is the reason why this hack is revolutionary. You control Saph, an ordinary buzzy beetle. Being a buzzy beetle, he has a few limitations that Mario did not have.

He can't jump.

That's right, this is a MARIO hack in which the player cannot jump! However, fear not, for Saph has a few special abilities that Mario didn't have. For instance:

Being a buzzy beetle, Saph has the ability to climb EVERY SINGLE WALL in the game.

So now you see that even though you can't jump, you're not confined to the ground all the time. But as every Mario fan knows, Mario's primary means of offense is to stomp on the enemy's head.

"Oh, no! It's a Koopa Troopa! What's a bug to do?"

"Oh, I know..."

"...SHELL SLAM!"

That's right. It's too bad Mario didn't have a protective shell of his own during his adventures. Just run towards an enemy and duck-slide, and WAM! You'll KO the enemy. Also, if Saph is lucky enough to land on an enemy from higher up, then he can still KO them the old way as well.

(By the way, I am aware that the status bar's star is miscolored. I don't care, as the star will not be appearing in the final version.)

That's all I'll show for now. There is much more to come, but I figured I'd keep it a surprise for now...

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/xYPAEMV-oQk&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xYPAEMV-oQk&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Here's a video to show some of this stuff in action.

Oh yeah, by the way, if you would like to support the buzzies' efforts to get a fair job with full benefits and a retirement plan, then use this userbar:

Looks incredible! Your idea is unique and I love Saph's abilities. Have you edited the hack in a Hex Editor to make these abilities? Or it is an ASM hack?

My only complaint is about the shading of some graphics, as for example, the turn block bridge that looks kinda 8-bit. Try shading it a bit more.
This is just a test level, actually. It probably won't make it into the real game. The block bridge just looks like that due to palettes and whatnot.

As for the abilities, I used Hex to disable jumping, and for the shell-sliding, I used ASM. You reminded me: I would like to personally thank Ersan, Bio, smkdan, and 1024 for helping me get some stuff sorted out. I suck at ASM unless it's a simple code like changing number of coins and stuff, so I probably wouldn't have been able to do this wthout them.
This hack seems to have a nice plot (much better than the classic) and it seems to incorperate a new character without destroying the entire mario-ness of it. as for the new abilities... the shell attack can be useful and the wall climbing ability can make up for the lack of jumping. This is very unique and please, stick to this project.
Thank you for listening/reading.

*WARNING: due to cosmic radiation, Quantum fluctuations, or earth going into sector x79352C, the world may end at any moment. Have a nice day.

Of course I'm sticking to this project. I made a promise to myself to actually complete a hack idea for once.

Heh, same here.
Anyway, looks nice.

Wow cool! ...He can't jump? Awww...
Well, have you ever seen a jumping Buzzy Beetle? I think not. However, there ARE flying Buzzy Beetles...
This looks really cool... I like how it can't jump and stuff.
So... good luck making this!
Oh and... will he be able to fly?
How To Design a Good Overworld
I really have to ask this:

How can you make this difficult? How would you make challenges that is suitable for this hack? So far, I can't seem to think of a good challenge because:

1) Shell smash.
2) He's climbing up and down walls.
3) There is no platforming involved whatsoever.
When he releases this I WILL play it. And it will be the first hack I've played in around a whole year.
Kudos.

Thanks! And as for flying...

...you'll have to see. >:)

"No Platforming involved whatsoever? Who ever said that? It's just not platforming in the traditional sense. Don't worry. You'll understand when you play it. Also, no one ever said that EVERY enemy is able to be KO'd by the shell smash...

Wow, thanks. :D I'll make sure that it's worth your time to play.

I had to make sure. I can't wait to see how your hack plays out. It's a very interesting hack.
Looks awesome. I really like the no jumping idea. But... Will you be able to go down walls the same way you go up them? Also, will you be able to kill enemies by falling off the wall and landing on top of them?
Parabuzzy, that looks like a lot of fun! I am looking forward to this hack. Keep up the good work!
CP_foothills has been canned. Therefore, this space is once again blank.
I thought it was spike tops that climbed walls... And are you going to make Saph slower? It would be weird for a beetle with a big shell to run as fast as Mario.

I said earlier that if you're lucky enough to be able to drop on top of an enemy, you will be able to KO them that way as well.

Well, I figured that a lack of jumping is already enough. Besides, they go faster than Koopas in Paper Mario...
It'll be tricky to design levels for this... I think Saph should be able to do a short little hop as opposed to not being able to jump at all. That way you could add some platforming elements while still using the shell slam for combat.

Mario's Nightmare Thread
Heh, I thought of disabling jumping in Pokey's Adventure as well, since a Pokey can't jump either. I decided not to to it though, because I wanted to keep the SMW feeling.

Anyway, great job so far. It'll probably be hard to design levels under those conditions, as others stated, but good luck with it!

Do you have a support bar?
I have been a big fan of the buzzy beetle enemy (They are just sooo adorable!) and I want to show that I am really looking forward to this hack :D
I wonder how the design will be with no jumping though...

You should add a power where he can fly with wings :o
