Super Mario 64: Adventures in Herenax - Intro + Progress Thread

Hello all. My name is XenoWars and I have only just recently started into the world of ROM hacking for Super Mario 64. I have started work on my first hack, titled "Super Mario 64: Adventures in Herenax." The story still needs some thought put into it, but the general idea is that Mario, tired of always having to rescue the princess, decides to take a vacation to the kingdom of Herenax.

All is fine and dandy once he gets there, but he soon realizes that something is amiss. Mario decides to investigate and finds that the power source for the kingdom has been stolen! Mario decides to help and must recover all 150 Energy Sprites in order to restore Herenax to its former glory. There will be a total of 15 courses, each with the standard 7 stars, so that means a total of 45 secret stars. Can you help Mario find the missing Energy Sprites?

Now I know for my first hack, that's a lot of work, but I don't quite plan on going all out. I feel fine just using what is already in the game to make my courses, but will take help if offered. I have only some of the first Hub World modeled out so far, but will continue to work on the hack throughout the summer. As a parting gift, here is the starting scene that is seen when you boot up the hack.

A work in progress, of course, and that Cap Switch obviously will not be there in the final product.

I agree! This has the makings of a really great hack! Good job. #tb{:D} If this is just the beginning, I can't wait to see the final product!

Thank you! I'm hoping it's a great one. Here's some more progress I made this morning. Got the Red Coin star position set, so now I just need to finish the map and place the coins. I also got the door to course 1 working. I'm going to continue on it now.

Wow, nice! I'm impressed, and I'm looking forward to playing this. I'd love to help out somehow, but I suppose you have no plans for making this a collaboration hack. Still, I'd really like to help in any way possible! #tb{:D}

Edit: I just noticed:

That sounds great! Could you PM me about this, about what you would want to contribute to it? I am having some small issues that will need fixed eventually.

Coming along really nice! The only thing I'm having an issue with is having a door on a patch of grass looks kind of weird.

I replaced that wall with the door with a flower patch with a warp pipe. That's more natural yes?

Anyway, I'm considering making this a collaboration, and I thought of what all 15 courses could be. First two bosses though I'm not sure.

Hub 1 has Herenax Hill, Clear Blue Bay, Grand Temple Ruins, Creepy Cavern, and Mt. Freezt.
Hub 2 would have a village level, desert level, another water level, a haunted level, and a tower/fortress.
Hub 3 would have the volcano level, another ice level, a jungle/swamp, a sky level, and some kind of night level.

The idea is that some of these courses would be connected with one another, the warp to each level being round-trip, and hub 1 is day/afternoon, hub 2 is evening/sunset, and hub 3 is night.

That sounds really interesting! Great ideas!
I wish I could think up such great ideas for my hack. #tb{:p}

Anyway I'd love to help in any way possible. This has promise for being a really great hack. Keep up the good work! #tb{:D}

The only thing that I am good at is coming up with star names or at least I think.

I'd say this is coming out well so far. Gonna add in the below surface parts after I finish the ruins area (the teal/green part) Have any tips based on what you see here?

Looks really great so far! I can't see there being any problems with it!

Me neither. Looks great! #tb{:)}

Thanks, you two! The hub world is almost going to be done, and I have some plans after that is done. Although before then, there are a couple things I need help with still. I can't seem to find a behavior that will let sand/snow be soft so that you get stuck in them instead of taking damage. There's also the issue of my script editor not opening so I can't add in the breakable wall behavior that I want to use, and then there's still the stars not counting as secret stars. I'd appreciate if anyone can help with those things.

The way to do that is to set the 'terrain type' in the OBJ Importer to snow/sand.

What version of Windows are you running? You probably need a fairly recent version. And if I recall correctly, you need the .Net Framework version 4.5 at least.

Sorry, I really wish I could help you here, but I'd need the ROM to do so. Still, good luck! I hope you can figure this out soon. #tb{:)}

God bless!

See, I'm looking in the terrain type part of the level editor, and I have the most recent version, but it's not one of the options there. I've tried snow/ice, sinking sand, solid parts on slippery ice, but none of them work for what I want. And if you mean in Toad's Tool, I clicked Terrain Type, but all it shows is 001x in the list and h0000 in the section below.

And then I have windows 10, so it's probably the Net thing

Hope this helped! #tb{:)}

Oh... Ok that could work but it goes for the whole level. There's no way to just do a specific texture? If all else fails I'll just do that. I know others have for levels that aren't entirely snow. Thanks, that does help. I'll see about thatNet thing when I'm back from work.

I know I've kept you waiting for the next peek into the project, but here it is.

https://ibb.co/hrd9yF

The general model of the first hub world is about done. Now I just need to model out unique stuff for each section of the map and then place objects with TT64 and the hub should be done. This is inside the fencing on the beach area. The water hole is how you actually get in.

I've also created a Discord server for the project if you want to follow there as well. It would be faster than waiting for stuff here.
