I usually think more about making my levels for masochists given my convoluted design style and how I want them to enjoy the best way they can.
They are also for myself, but I mostly cater to that audience.Windowless ride, feeling alive

I don't really think for who I make levels for. I guess I try to reach the widest audience, but that might not be too successful due to the difficulty of them. So in the end it might be myself, or those that appreciate the challenges I offer. It depends on what kind of hack I'm making I feel.
For a hack or fangame, the target audience aimed at. If its meant to be challenging, the levels are designed for experienced players to be enaged for example.
For a contest, it is to appease a wider range of skillsets if because the judges selected may as well be the people representing those skill sets, so I make my levels for the judges to judge. The lower the score, I would evaluate what to do differently.Modern Redrawn Mario Bros. 1.5 (last update - February 14, 2023, some new bonus frames, tons of minor touchups to various poses)
On Pixel Art Requests: Depends on what it is and if I have the time for it. If its complex and I don't have the time, don't expect me to accept it.

Same tbh.
Besides that.. uh.. I guess the safe answer is myself, but that's obviously not entirely true. I would say a combination of myself, a wide audience, kaizo enthusiasts, speedrunners and kaizo speedrunners, and people in the kaizo/jump/speedrunning community who will play my hack a lot. It also seems like my hacks meet a woder audience outside of smwcentral, so I try to design stuff that caters to them.
Well I design to people like me, assuming there are people like me lol (there are, really)
Something I'd love to play if it were made by someone else, and that would inspire myself. It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Yeah, for myself pretty much. I'm only truly satisfied with a level I made once I have fun playing through it, and my main motivation for actually trying to do a full hack is playing it lol.
Mostly I make stuff that I find fun to play, and for other people who want a fair but difficult challenge. I mostly do kaizo but I want to make something people won't give up on 10 seconds into the level. Target audience is people who want savestateless kaizo because there aren't enough good hacks in that realm.YouTube | Music
Me, and I get pretty damn offended when people tell other people that they "have" to make levels that other people will like. I maintain that my shitty levels have no flaws if they're exactly the type of level I wanted to make.Very very very shortly, this drab, workaday world and everything in it will be changed forever! I am trying my best to not comment on answers to this thread, but I was waiting for the person who would be the very example of "You don't have to be good at level design if your target audience is yourself."
Technically he wasn't the first considering I said I make levels that I enjoy first.
