VLDCX - New Leaders, the Overworld, & World X.

I was thinking random Mario-is-just-standing [unless we're up to code in lots of movies too!!] screens too. To my knowledge it's not possible to make the first screen you'll ever see random (unless you check ~possible~ key inputs), but I imagine an address that gets values from the RNG could be saved to SRAM to make it random from the second boot onwards.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
make the first boot the banner the site used then #smrpg{y}
[the VLDCX banner]

and movies are corny i like mario standing still
ask me if i give a f*ck...

why wouldn't the title screen be either a combination of multiple levels, or something new altogether. Or if it has to be a level in the comp it'd be fun to have a different level appear on the title screen each time you boot it up. If the tech is there. Just some way to make it randomly pick from a list of levels or screens to spawn Mario on.

the title screen for vldc9 didnt make any sense to me because it made it look like the comp was going to be centered around the concept of space, or just that level in particular. Picking a single level to represent the scope of the contest is impossible, and we're better off deciding on another way to present the collab in a more unifying way. Or dont i guess it doesnt really matter. #smrpg{y}

please stop reading and spoiling my mind :D

Actually, my plan is to the title screen have some kind of animation based over the VLDCX banner. Playing fancy effects, letters and multiple levels fading in the screen.

okay, enough spoiling my ideas for now!!!

Let's see... 180 levels, with ~80% having a secret exit... 144 secret exits... 324?

Also, how's progress going? It's been awhile since we last had an update.

Really?
*everything stops*
Yeah, that's me. You're probably wondering how I got into this situation...

that doesn't redeem smwcp2 or how horrible 70% of vldcx's levels are
I really like how you people already take a dump on vldcx before it is even finished.
And anyone saying "X of the levels are horrible" should really reconsider what he is saying about honest tries of a lot of people. Maybe they can not create incredible gauntlet levels, but even a normal, everday world 1 level isn't "horrible".

I just hate all this negativity. Can you guys just be positive about this project? This is the biggest smw hack yet with a majority of ok/good and a good portion of great levels.
If the overworld is half as good as the one from vldc9, it will still be a great overworld.

An update on how long judging is going to take would be nice though.

Don't be so negative. Just because you apparently sinned with your level doesn't mean the rest of the levels are bad. I haven't played or seen any of the levels yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing the different level design techniques used by the creators.

People have different opinions/tastes for what makes a good level. Some like levels that play like the original SMW, some like levels with fancy visuals, some like them gimmicky, some like the difficult VIP styled levels, .etc. This collaboration is a perfect balance in the sense that it has something for everybody, since it's made by different people with different backgrounds in level design.

I haven't entered the contest and I'm looking forward to playing it. I'm not sure why anyone would be so negative. This contest is a great way to get people interested in SMW hacking.
Basically people are negative because they have become disillusioned with the contest and the fact that, while a lot of levels are really great, a lot of them are not. This didn't change from vldc9 or 8 or anything really. In fact, we've been progressing amd slowly getting better. The sheer volume of the hack has been the main cause of disillusionment.

Most of this is also due to the ridiculous hype that was attached to the contest and the somewhat dissapointing outcome. Not with the levels themselves, but with the judging process, collaborative effort, etc. Having talked firsthand with the judges myself, it's insanely unfun to judge all these entries, and it also basically caused multiple people to drop off the face of the internet and has already stirred up multiple controversies.

That, combined with the huge number of contests in 2017, has made a lot of the community weary of over-hyping things. I'm thinking the reactionary consequences of this was people being drawn to more simple things, purely vanilla levels, creative simplicity over huge ideas, etc. Basically over-ambition may be to blame, but I definitely found myself sacificing good simple ideas for over the top ambitious stuff. And the actual collaborative process itself was extremely ambitious and well... it fell flat.

Come back to me after you have sat down and played all 180 entries all the way through. You are taking an extremely overly simplistic view of the situation. "Different level design techniques" is especially amusing because most people do not have "level design techniques". I don't want to crush your optimism, because by all means, there are entries to VLDCX that will blow you awa with sheer creativity and insanely ingenuous level design. Those levels are few and far between.

You shouldn't be talking about what this contest offers having not played any of the entries either.

Don't listen to Pat though because he is just memeing and hasn't seen all the levels either, and apparently it's a meme now to hate on vldcx so yea

Also @NGB

Lolyoshi is done, Koopster is getting close, Noivern I'm unsure, the rest are not even near close because they got a really late start.

Also, when you speak about "world 1 levels", the opposite is actually true. Most people basically tried too hard. If you wanna see a contest with a lot of good level where people come up with good, simple ideas, check out OLDC.

I agree that negativity is dumb. I'm not trying to be negative here, just realistic.

Actually a big shout-out to Rameau's Nephew who iirc is relatively consistently and nicely progressing through the judging despite being one of the replacements

I'll be playing them once the hack is released.

Everyone has different techniques, whether you agree with them or not is a different issue entirely. It's not like I'm expecting masterpieces. In fact, I'm sure there will probably be levels that feel like my level design abilities. It's not a bad thing though. it shows they are trying to learn the tools & basic design principles. That in itself will make certain levels charming to me. Plus, you say there is stuff that will blow me away. How can I not be optimistic?

I feel my opinion is important because I'm an outsider when it comes to SMW. And pretty much everyone can agree that it's good to have opinions from all sides, even if they aren't the most informed.

Also, I didn't realize Pat was joking. I wasted valuable time for nothing. *sighs #w{:s}
holy fUCK it was just one sentence lmao
One very unclear sentence at that. Maybe writing more would have avoided drama.
