[Full Hack] Mario's Keytastrophe: Rebirth Edition

Hey, welcome to C3 2017.

"Mario's Keytastrophe: Rebirth Edition" is not a remake of the original Mario's Keytastrophe from 2007 (though wow, has it really been ten years?), but rather a completely new game that acts as a (finished!) spiritual successor to the original. The goal was to take the concept that KT was inspired by - that is, single-screen key-to-keyhole puzzles - and create a hack using that as the entire foundation. I think that the style I've chosen here more accurately reflects modern design standards, so I'm hoping people will enjoy it. I have also tried to make it speedrunner-friendly by including a timer on the map, as well as multiple paths for both 100% completionists and people who just want to find the quickest route to the end.

NOTE: No key/shell jumping is required in this hack, though if you're particularly ambitious, I've set up a few puzzles that could probably be totally broken by it.

Special thanks to Koopster for the lovely overworld on such short notice, and to Medic for the timer code.

SCREENSHOTS AND TRAILER:

TRAILER LINK - apologies in advance for the potato quality, this was a bit of a rush job to get a video put together.

Thanks for checking out this thread. I hope you enjoy the hack!
I love you.

I only saw videos/pictures of the original KT and never played it on my own. Guess I should now though, huh?

Looks great, definitely giving this a try soon.
i nEED TO CLAIM THIS WHY CAN'T I AAAAAAAAAAAaaa stupid only one hack at a time rule
will give this a shot later anyway!
:O

I remember when I played the original Keytastrophe back then, but this looks definitely great for a successor just from watching the trailer itself. I'll try it soon!

EDIT: finished about 11 levels but that's enough to mention how much of a blast it is.
wow. Talk about unexpected.

The original hack defined my introduction to the SMW hacking scene and I actually remember making a short shitty video about it back in 2008! Knowing that it has finally come to a close is pretty crazy. Gonna definitely try it soon.
Seems cool. Though I will admit it's a shame it isn't a remake of the original.

It weirdly reminds me of Super Mario Logic, but with chocolate assets. That's good though. It means the environments look and feel more interesting.

One suggestion, you should use the Retry Prompt patch so you can instantly get back to playing. You encourage speedrunners to play it after all. The patch would greatly benefit them.

Hi.
I played like 10 levels so far and it's been a blast. Looks like a really great little time-killer. It's also astounding how polished this is for a couple of months job.
Thanks for the opportunity of making a map for this! #ab{;)}

I noticed you can L+R during the death animation to reset the level

I thought of this, though it causes some weird layer 3 issues so I opted for just using L + R to reset the level. It also seems like you can use that while dying too, which I just learned.
Someone pinch me because clearly I'm dreaming.

Fair enough. I suppose you've got to make do with what works.

Hi.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this C3 has just been made.

Keytastrophe is the first hack that little 13-year-old WYE got really invested in back in the day, and it's by far the one I associate most (vague) fond memories with. (Legitimately nostalgic for Keytastrophe, how's that for a compliment?) Of course I realize this rebirth is entirely different except in the core concept, but if there's just a pinch of the old Keytastrophe spirit of wonder and awe in it, if it has 2010s SNN level design, and if it's actually *finished*, there's no way this isn't going to be great.

Thanks for a nice surprise, and kudos for the effort of making a full hack. I'm really excited!

I'll try my best to leave more in-depth feedback when I get back from playing this.

This surely was surprising and the fact that it´s been 10 years already you created the original Keytastrophe makes me feel quite old.

Nonetheless, alone from judging the Screenshots and the Trailer this is definitely going to be a high quality hack. Original Keytastrophe already amazed me back then and I´m sure this "Rebith Edition" won´t be inferior. Great work SNN.

Excuse me, WHAT!?

Damn son, well looks like i need to play some Marios today.
Oh man, Keytastrophe was one of the first SMW hacks I ever played and I thought for certain there was never going to be a finished version in some form.
Then this happened. Even if it's not exactly a remake of the original, still pretty awesome.
