For me, there's a few.

In Super Mario World, for some reason I didn't figure out that picture on a dragon coin was a yoshi head until just a few years ago lol. Instead, for some reason, I always saw it like a mitten, holding an upside down spoon, like so.

Another one was Mario's death GFX. For some reason, I always viewed his hat as his upper lip, and the red area inbetween his nose and hat, as the inside of his mouth. So it bassicly looked like he had his mouth open REALLY wide, like he was crying like a baby, which was what i assumed lol.

Oh, and I made what I think might've been the common mistake, of thinking Mario's mustache was a smile. Oh and I thought Mario was Mexican. I couldn't have been the only one... right? lol. In SMB3 for GB, when he says "Let'sa go!", it sounds like "Mexico!"

So what about you guys? Is there anything you grew up seeing the wrong way?

I kinda see the upside down spoon now...what have you done to me!?

One for me has always been Agahnim from A Link to the Past.

Layout by RanAS, modified by yours truly.

Oh my god what the fuck it took me legitimately 5 full minutes to even be able to see the official art in that sprite. That ring around his forehead is WAY too face-like wtf

for the longest time i thought Super Mario World was a good game #smrpg{y}

im dying of hyperbole
I thought that saws in Super Mario World had eyes and mouths, and looked like they wanted to kiss.

I finished my KLDC 2020 level, go play it!
-I thought the Skypests in Keen 4 were bats.
-I thought the yellow thing you make Yoshi puke on to get into the pipe was fire, but I'm pretty sure there was actual fire elsewhere in the game that looked more like fire and that you could put out using FLUDD. To this day IDK what it is.

-I think I remember thinking his eyes were really wide and red instead of just pinpricks. Or was I right the first time and they're not just pinpricks against red skin? If that's the case, that might be an inversion.

How am I so creative? I think taking walks might have something to do with it.
Every single level I will ever make in SMM2 will be easier than Ultra Necrozma.

Valentina from Super Mario RPG was undecypherable for me. I thought her hat was her head (who hasn't? Besides, what kind of hat makes face expressions?), and her actual head was... an inflated neck? Who knows? Her battle sprite really doesn't help.

I felt that way about Geno. I get what those orange loops on his head look like now, but at the time, I just couldn't decipher what his face was supposed to look like lol. It just seemed like a weird jumbled mess of pixels to me haha

I always interpret its arm as its mouth. Like, a really big lower lip.

Also, I still don't know what's on the back of its head. A puff of hair? A bun? Maybe it's a balloon and that's where it's tied off?

So that is an arm? I always thought it was its mouth as well and its arm was literally hidden inside the cloud until just today.
Well, I guess that makes three of us.

I'm pretty sure that's a hat. At least that's how I see it.

So I just started playing a link to the past, and tbh if I hadn't seen you post prior, I probably wouldn't even have known that's not what he's supposed to look like, but now that I know, I keep trying to see it and I can't ;-;

Tho in his concept art he's red… And although I can't make out how he supposed to look in his pixel art, I'm pretty darn sure he's dressed green in the game >.>...

Edit: Omg I see it now. This helped out a lot. Leod is absolutely right wth.

That artist apparently didn't notice the original sprite needed to be mirrored. The pillow shading on the original was by necessity.

Still good at conveying the original artwork, though.

lol what. I always assumed that it was his mouth too.

A lot of the outside tileset in Pokemon Red/Blue initially confused me as a kid. All the small ledges in the game I just saw a mini walls or rope and was confused by why the character can jump over them from behind but not from the front.

One sprite that still confuses me with what they are supposed to be are these cylinder things that surround the boundaries of the map:

What are they supposed to be?

I always thought Vivian's eyes were blush markers, her hair on the front was her nose, and that her real eyes were covered by her hat :(

I thought the cloud tiles in SMW were supposed to be teeth.

--------------------

I thought so too. This is the thing I could've mentioned before, but totally forgot about. If you look at the lower part of the cloud, you can see what you possibly used to confuse with.
