The time is nigh! As you saw from the poll, this time it's all about the Little Cup. Despite first impressions, this format isn't the easiest for beginners to just jump right into, as the stats are so particularly min-maxed due to rounding. Don't feel intimidated by this, though, because there's absolutely no shame in copy-pasting the suggested Smogon sets!
The tournament will be a standard double elimination format, best of 3 games per match. If there's not a power of two in participants there may be some byes/preemptive rounds.
As always, these games are fought on Pokémon Showdown: http://play.pokemonshowdown.com/
Anyone can create an account and start battling instantly for free.
The Little Cup "LC" metagame is documented on Smogon: http://www.smogon.com/dex/sm/formats/lc/
And there is a LC Chatroom on the server where one can ask for advice: http://play.pokemonshowdown.com/lc
In brief, it's every basic Pokémon that's able to evolve, set to level 5. Ever wanted to use a Munchlax competitively? This has you covered. Some overlooked things like Berry Juice (+20 HP) become suddenly very viable.
Make sure you at least glance over this so you don't get startled by the team creator telling you your favorite pokémon is banned after you've already lovingly created a set for it.
Important info and rules (read all!)
•Once you've made a team, export the team as plaintext and PM it to HyperMario for archiving. As always, you can't modify your team once the tour has started.
•Scouting is allowed by necessity—you will post replays in this thread as matches are completed. The teams are final at the onset of the tour, anyways. If people don't want this, though, it may be possible to have replays PM'd to me instead (but then I'd have my own advantage).
•All rules are identical to those of Smogon's default LC metagame; no special amendments (Confuse ray is no longer banned).
•To make sure you have read these notes, make a forum post or edit your reservation post to mention your favorite pokémon (any pokémon) once you have sent your team to HyperMario.
•You have a week to build your team and practice, practice, practice against random people online! You can still practice while the tournament is ongoing, but you can't revise the team at that point.
•Everyone is expected to play their matches within the 1 week turnover period. If one party attends but the other could not, then the game is considered a victory in favor of the one who was present.
•For tournament dropouts from round 1, replacements may be found. No further replacements will occur beyond the first upper bracket match.
•The rules are subject to change as necessary.
While there's no dedicated Pokémon channel on the SMWC Discord, you have my explicit permission to derail any conversations in #gaming to make way for very important pokémon talk.
Sounds cool! I have no prior experience with Pokémon Showdown, but I'd like to try participating in this - if only to inevitably make easy pickings for someone else. Should still be a fun experience!
Seeing as I've now settled on a team composition, I can finally proclaim that Sneasel is my favourite Pokémon. Such a shame that it's banned from this format...
Of course I will be joining as well.
Edit: There is a middleman for verifying teams before the beginning of the tournament. Please send your finalized teams to https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=profile&id=29413 instead of me, and double check the OP to make sure you've got everything all good.
Fave 'mon for the purposes of this contest can be mudkip.
@rules: I must ask, is confuse ray not banned? iirc it's been gone for the previous few tournaments due to its uncompetitive nature
It's not officially banned from smogon. Lloyd banned it because it was abused at lot durring the FR tournaments. Personally, I'm fine either way.
btw I'm entring.
Yes, i used to ban confuse ray because it turned out to be abused and ridicuosly overused and literally turned out battles into a mess thanks to rng.
And as Najeraldo says, i did that because i saw the effects by myself. Even Nestorvelasquez won a tourney just thanks to confuse ray.
There is no need to ban it by Gen 7 tho, since as i heard, it got nerfed.
Lastly, unlike most people would likely assume im NOT joining this time. I just barely have time by now for doing anything unrelated to university.
I'll be looking after this tournament anyway to see how it develops.
Good luck for everyone who joins.
(And we may see our faces again next year i guess, when im willing and they let me host again, of course )
