BTW, what is "color math", exactly? I read about that in one of the levels, and that it's an unintended thing that warranted a penalty. But, I don't exactly know what it is.
For a level made in just one day that even myself consider mediocre, being in the rank 37 is actually pretty amazing.

final theory's level was at least functional and was better than inferno alethic and variety path

Colour maths is an easy way to achieve transparacy by either adding or subtracting a pixel's colour with another. It isn't a new thing in SMW (at least colour addition) as layer 3 mist and fishes have this activated (or rather not deactived) and is part of the translucent level modes.
An example of colour subtraction, dreamworkman's level uses level mode 11, a level mode where the background subtracts its own colour to the level (except sprite tiles using palettes 8-B), thus creating a hue of the background's complementary colour (here, orange) to the level and make it darker (due to using a subtraction) too. This isn't without side effects as background tiles now have got the same priority as foreground tiles and the above mentioned lack of colour maths on sprite tiles with palettes 8-B.

39th is quite good for a first contest entry, but it's just so frustrating to know I would've ranked higher if I had properly designed the level instead of doing it at the last fkin minute smh... I'll try to make something for cldc using this same gimmick.

Whatever you do, DON'T change it. People will ask for more freedom but for that we have VLDC already and that is kind of ruined too because people are never satisfied with guidelines.
