smh people judging my entry by its name. I knew I should've named it "get a scandalous pic of Kieran kissing SNN irl by clicking this.spc". #wario{>:|}

Jokes aside, thanks for those who voted my entry and gave feedback. I'll see what I can do to improve it before I release it.

This contest was a fun little thing that brought my porting spark back, so thanks to Nameless for hosting it, to the staff people who helped plan it, and the participants, especially Wakana (congratulations!).

👏

Good work everyone! 👻

sorry i forgot to vote but congrats to all the participates
that did a great job with their songs

when i see cutoff i'm like

oh nice, it's over

I actually didn't expect to get that much of a good result anyway, so I'm honestly happy with 5th place

Now, to talk about what I thought about this contest, because I have a shitload of stuff to say that I have been meaning to do it for when this contest was over:

First of all, these entries were actually REALLY fucking good. The Cemetery one definitely deserved the praise it got, the PMD port... well, not so much honestly (I mean, there was probably a better port you could've picked for a spooky forest vibe that didn't sound very "frosty" you know), but that YU-NO port... god DAMN man, that shit's just FIRE

Honestly, I already knew it was Sinc-X which made it JUST due to the fact he's the only guy I know which would know about YU-NO's existence at all (maybe lion too, I dunno), and if I wasn't already participating and if it fitted well with the settings proposed here, I would've definitely ranked it at number 1; I'm also definitely looking forward to when this gets released ;)

Also, I know I already said this before, but I'm actually legitimately surprised people liked my port just because it was the one song which fitted the best compared to the others (in most people's opinion anyway). Honestly, I should've definitely picked a better option than the game I chose, because the soundtrack from the game I chose (which is actually supposed to be a song from the SNES Aladdin game made by Capcom btw; sorry I haven't specified it, hehe) was actually very simple in terms of composition, so because of that, the port was also very simple (in fact, if you look at the song itself, you'll actually see it and my port are not much different from each other, so), but I mostly did it anyway both because it fitted a egyptian temple quite well, and because of nostalgia, since that game was actually one of the first games I ever played, if you didn't know.

So yeah, that's it lol

That was an outright win. Congrats to everyone, especially to Jon who honestly I didn't expected him to be part of the best 3. Good work, musicians!
Thanks everyone for participating! Keep your best

Also Thanks Shiny Ninetales!

I ported what I wanted to port and what would require the minimum work with samples, since I had to start my entry late due to a 4 hour-long exam I had on Saturday + countless days with little sleep. Since I already had most of the samples for this from porting another track of the same game, and since I thought it was a more interesting track than the would-be-more-fitting track from the same game (Sinister Woods) and since I thought it was fitting enough for a foggy forest setting (and I still do), I went for it.

Like, the only other options I had in mind were Sinister Woods and Phantom Forest from Final Fantasy VI, but the latter has already been ported and it's a bit too mainstream for this contest, I feel.

Just giving reasons behind my choice because I feel like it, lol.

The YU-NO port is good but it fits absolutely no image and it doesn't really fit the theme of the contest either
And while 19s fits its image, it hurts my ears

its a pc98 track that means the author can only be either sinc or tcdw (or ultima maybe)

The full name makes me laugh

Yeah, understandable lol

I didn't have many options to work with as well anyway (since spooky music is NOT my kinda thing at all), so I either had the Prince of Persia SNES soundtrack, which, while it sounds very arabian, it wasn't what I was looking for (I'm not sure tho, since I didn't listen to the full soundtrack yet), Avdol's theme from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Arcade), since I'm kinda liking this soundtrack as of late, but this wasn't spooky at all, and a bit too rock-ish, so it wouldn't fit very well also, and then a random song from the SNES version of Aladdin, which, again, I had quite a bit of nostalgia for, and it was the closest to a egyptian temple song vibe I could find, even if it wasn't spooky at all. Well, you can see why I chosen that then, probably, especially due to the limited time I had

since I was ninja'd, might as well:

even if there's the fact I actually REALLY want to port something from YU-NO, I haven't found many MIDIs for it, and especially not that particular song (IIRC), so well, there's your answer lol

i think there was a fundamental flaw with the theme in that we were Specifically Told to interpret the image -in any way we saw fit- but then were not given any chance to explain the reasoning and voting was just "does the image fit" rather than "does the image fit for the intended context". i would have rathered the theme just be one single image, or not an image at all, OR have the images as purely inspiration and not relevant to voting.

in any case, congrats to the winners. bit salty still considering what i put aside for this and how incredibly painful it was to port that but hopefully the next one will be more objective

I really liked cemetery and yuno.

Overall very talented songs. Maybe make the contest not so short next time.
I honestly didn't expect to win, I actually placed my bets on yuno in terms of port quality (too lazy to check for the pics lol).
Congrats to the other winners! It was a really cool contest. Wish more people joined though.
Sinc: if this means anything, if you release the port, I would be really happy.

The intended context was supposed to be that image, so if you thought up your own one then well, assignment missed I guess?
It's a really great track though, and even I who is a musical illiterate could tell how well that was ported (and how good the song itself sounds).
congrats to the wieners sorry if it made you sad that I judged some entries by their names
Congratulations Wakana ! Not gonna lie, I had bet with someone that Cemetery was yours. Hope you'll release it cause it sure as hell is gold material.
Congrats to Gloomy and JonKarasu too ! Especially the latter. How does it feel to gain your first trophy ?
Oh and finally 'grats to all other participants.
#smrpg{y}
koopster: the chances of it being Actually released are slim to none, as i doubt the samples would all fit even with #optimized and the whole mml is kind of a disaster (unsurprisingly considering i sent the pm with less than a minute to spare). but, if you still want it, it's here

also leod i guess my point is more that pictures are just too subjective of themes to make sense in a contest like this

edit: i guess since i complained about it i might as well explain my thought process. the haunted house image, even though there wasn't actually a clock in it, made me immediately think of clock tower (the game) and i didn't want to be boring and port a snes song so on that train of thought i tried to find a song that gave off a similar mood and boom there you go. the theme never implied that the song had to be actually "spooky" as some put it and so i had no second thoughts about my song choice. the theme even explicitly said we could go by the "mood" of the image. this sums it up pretty well
