I promise nothing but if I somehow manage to rearrange the way channels play + #fukARAM, I can get a SMW-compatible version next C3. My main annoyance would be that, rn, there's lots of important stuff playing in #6 and #7, and the mml is pretty much chaotic due to it being a port for a contest rather than for a hack.
I have to agree with Sinc-X here. The problem with picture themes is that they are way too subjective. Kinda disappointed that most of the people who voted didn't really take that into consideration, especially considering Nameless said that that the participants could interpret the images however they want. I think they should've given him the benefit of the doubt.

Besides, quality should be the most important factor in these types of competitions anyway.

Well, I mean, I do agree that it should've been more focused in quality, like most of these types of contests (at least then I could've probably ported something more technically impressive, maybe), but the theme here was less about the quality factor and more about how fitting and spooky you can make your track to be, which sadly, and I REALLY hate to say this, wasn't what Sinc's port did at all, which is why he got such a low place. Seems to be a pretty simple motive to me #wario{-_-?}

I agree with what Sinc-X has said, in that the the creator should have had some say on how they interpreted the picture, or at least that it should be clear what the people should be listening for. However, I do not believe the contest(s) should be judged based entirely on technical skill, although demonstrating technical skill can certainly help in many cases.

Music is subjective: There are some aspects that are clearly outlined and can be analytically debated, but there are also certain aspects that are entirely subjective, such as a song having spirit, or if it "sounds good/interesting."

I think it's a very gray area that can be helped with more clear voting and participation instructions, but to reduce the contest entirely to something that becomes a matter of showing off technical skill feels... well, I think it would remove a lot of the creative aspect that goes into song writing. Surely, it will be easier to vote, but I think it will also make the contest seem a lot more dull somehow.
Taking Crispy's side here.
Focusing more on technical skill over everything else would fit better with like an ASM contest or smth.

Again, the YU-NO port is super good but I feel it doesn't fit this contest's theme or the pic it's meant to be inspired by which is the most important part.
I agree with Crispy on the "authors explaining how they interpreted the pic in the context of the song" thing, that would help matters.

of course music will always be a subjective art--i'm not denying that. my problem is that having a subjective theme on top of an already subjective art makes voting so individualized and irrelevant you almost might as well pick the votes at random

I should clarify that by quality I don't mean purely technical skill, but more "how enjoyable is this?" Though I disagree with lion because I'd argue technical skill plays a bigger role in porting than you'd think. Making a song sound good using a particular sound chip (especially the SNES) isn't a particularly easy feat, and should be taken into consideration as well.

Regarding the YU-NO port though, I could understand if Sinc-X ported Generic Happy Kirby Song or something, but I don't think the mood of the YU-NO song was too far off from the whole spooky theme. Sure, it wasn't your traditional "spooky" song or anything, but it could still work. (Seriously, listen to 0:20 of the port again for example. That part is eerie as fuck.)

I guess I shouldn't be getting too worked up over this since I didn't even participate, but I've seen this sort of thing a lot in past SMWCIdols, where voters downright ignore the quality of the song for arbitrary reasons such as "this would not fit in an SMW hack" or "This is too loud when I play it at 400% in spcplay". I guess for themed competitions like this one it's a bit more justified, but I just hope this doesn't continue to be a trend.

The problem is because of the way judging works, it's all up to the voters to decide the rules of how each should be judged. There isn't any rules on how one judges, so ultimately people are going to go their own way of choosing the entries that fit best. After all, how is one suppose to know that the images are only there as reference? They're probably thinking that "if it can't fit = terrible port", when the intention was quality and the image are somewhat 50/50 or 40/60 or whatever. Other examples is any bad judging ends up in the final results anyway, like the whole "it's too loud cuz I have volume at 400%", but it still effects the results.
