In case of your disappointment, I'm sorry, but I'm actually asking about a thing in original SMW.

It is that I've always wondered as a child and I've been wondering until now - what is that BG in Vanilla Dome 4 supposed to be?

The same BG (only with different palette) was seen in few levels in Star Road, where it clearly represents stars and clouds.
However in underground this is quite unlikely (unless there is a portal to another dimension or something). I suspect the wall in Vanilla Dome is green in this area and the "stars" represent sunlight seen thru little holes like in other underground levels? And the black clouds are fog, or an area that's too deep for light to reach?

It's a good way to make an athletic level in the underground-themed world though. I also love how they made the one in Valley of Bowser. But this keeps me concerned...

Anyway maybe only the authors could have the answer to this question, or there isn't a definite answer to this question. Still I'd like to know, what you guys think.

Yeah, I just said "Might not hurt to ask a pointless question."

I'm not sure what the creators had in mind when they designed Vanilla Dome 4, but I have my own theory.

I see Dinosaur Land as a huge volcanic system, similar to Hawaii. Yoshi's Island and Chocolate Island are small islands. The Forest of Illusion is located on a slightly larger island, and Cookie Mountain is the highest peak on that island. Donut Plains is also on a larger island, and it has a huge volcanic crater in the middle, which filled with water and created Donut Secret 1. Vanilla Dome rose out of that island due to underground magma pushing the land upward. The Valley of Bowser is a huge caldera, which caused the central landmass to sink into the ocean.

Because it's a huge volcanic system, Vanilla Dome is filled with magma chambers, lava tubes, and volcanic vents. Vanilla Dome 4 is one of these volcanic vents, a skylight that provides a view of the outside world.

But that's just a theory...a Game Theory! MatPat, get on this right now.
I always assumed the sparkles were jewels or crystals in the cavern roof. No idea about the dark area though.
NathanWarford's theory sounds very interesting...
BTW I love MatPat's GT!

On the overworld you can clearly see the walls sparkling so we know in Vanilla Dome's levels it's supposed to be from the walls rather than the sky. Perhaps the darker part could just be ground, but considering it's made from graphics that are literally re-used in sky levels it's really up to speculation and interpretation.

Yeah, actually makes more sense than holes in the wall #tb{'_'}

I always thought it was just some random night time level in the middle of world 3. The World 3 ghost house and castle openings don't resemble underground either.
I always thought they had designed an athletic night level and didn't know where to put it so they just plopped it in the Vanilla Dome.

Now that I look at it, the green and sparkles could be the dome wall and the black could be a rocky ground.
