shex editor giving me problems

I have my rom open with shex editor. All I want to do is replace a hex value with another one, but if I try and delete the current value or write over it, it says "warning if you change the size of the rom it will be usable.

So I usually use the find/replace option. But why can't I just type in the new values of what I want to change? Why won't it let me just type stuff in to overwrite existing values, why does it "think" I'm trying to expand the rom when I'm not.

What am I doing wrong? I just want to replace certain values with other values without changing the size, but its like its impossible!!!!

okay well it looks like you can find and replace more than 1 value at a time so I think I can manage now that I figured this out.
You can just type over the values - just make sure you haven't selected any text and don't try to delete the existing text before overwriting. Also, you shouldn't be using raw hex edits at all - instead, make Asar patches. This means you can track what you have changed and it makes porting everything to a new ROM a lot easier.
Does Asar also work for other roms or only on SMW rom?

Asar works with anything; it's a general-purpose assembler.

RATS tags will still be generated by freecode/freedata/etc. commands though; I don't believe Asar provides any method of changing that format, so if you're using other hacking tools (e.g. Hyrule Magic) that doesn't recognize them, there may be some issues.
