I feel like 2D Mario hacking would be better if it was not SMW

I feel like it would be so much more interesting to hack 2D Mario games if it was something like SMA4 or SMAS:SMB3, and I really wish there were hacking communities for those games as large and developed as those for SMW.
Why?

breakable blocks > turning blocks
classic goombas > SMW goombas

Funny how the two elements you mentioned are also two of the easiest things to bring into SMW, since custom sprites and blocks are able to be inserted with ease due to the progress made by SMW romhackers.

Moving away from that moot point and replying more to this thread in general, why is this something that has to be one or the other? The only reason that SMW is synonymous with 2D Mario hacking is because of the vast amount of knowledge we have about the game's engine and innerworkings. It's not as if the only 2D game you're allowed to romhack is Super Mario World. If you want to romhack those other games so badly then by all means—I encourage you to actually go out and do something about that. You yourself could start taking apart those other games if you wanted to, you don't have to wait around for others to make the jump.

edit: To elaborate more on my point: no, I'm not saying to screw off just because you want to romhack those other games. Believe me, I understand that. You're justified in wanting to do that, but saying that 2D Mario hacking would be better if it wasn't mainly about SMW seems a little farfetched.
how you going to diss smw's jumping physics like that though
SMW has probably the best physics out of the oldschool 2D Marios. The fact it's more popular than the others might have to do with that. Now of course it's also cause of the ease to hack it in comparison to literally anything else, but that's a result of a large amount of interest and consequentially investment that went into it in the past.

If you want other Mario hacking communities to grow, the best thing you can do is contribute to them.

Can you stop acting all condescending whenever you disagree with someone's post or similar, especially when that someone is not even intending to be annoying? It's really unnecesary and quite frankly super obnoxious and you do this a lot. Thanks.

SMW is it's own game obviously, there are hacking scenes for those games, just like there are hacking scenes for other snes games. I personally like SMW a lot more than the other mario games. I prefer the look, the engine, and overall how it's setup more, not like there isn't flaws with SMW, but as said before SMW is the easiest game to hack. It has the most figured out about it of most of the hacked games I've seen, though sonic has a lot more in terms of hacking. even though I think your opinion doesn't really make much sense, I don't think it's a stupid opinion or anything.
blunted
Also popping in to say that SMW has the best physics engine of all the SNES or previous mario games (with the possible exception of yoshi's island, though that game's a bit different from standard mario).

SMB1 has frankly awful physics. It's true it was one of the first platformers and probably defined the genre, but that doesn't make it a good hacking target.
SMB2/Doki Doki Panic has better physics but still not great. Even if you want a floaty feel, other games did better.
SMB3 is way, way too slippery. They were still getting the hang of things at this point. The main point in the game's favor is content; there's a lot of stuff in the game, from enemies to tilesets to powerups.

So yeah, SMW was a good choice. Its flaws (lacking in tilesets, enemy variety, powerup variety, etc) have mostly been fixed by hackers. If it had a bad physics engine that would be MUCH harder to fix.
I always thought SMB3 and SMW felt exactly the same with controls, except when flying.

Smb1&3 both has full disassembles and has decent level editors, smb2 also has level editor. NSMB games also has decent editors.

The thing is, SMW is most beginner/non-asm friendly(the LM itself, and bunch of other misc editors), and bunch of custom asm freely available, which I feel like why majority just sticks with SMW since its so brain-dead simple to work with.

Personally Id loved to see SMA4 editor(even an basic one), but thats just pipe dream at this point.

The big reason as to why SMW is much further in "Rom Hacking" than the others is because knowledgable members decided they wanted to further improve on the hacking of this game and not the others, it was a personal decision.

As far as factual reasons as to why:
• Super Mario World has become the easiest SNES game to modify. And I'm probably not even exaggerating with that statement either. This over all invites people to easily come and modify.
• Not bound by other games. SMB3, SMB1, at least the ones for the SNES, are as far as I know, bound to a multiple-game rom, which means room restrictions. SMW is bound to the 4 MB space of room that Lunar Magic normally allows, unless you use SA-1 (or other enhancement chips)
• All the reasons one has listed as to why you would want to modify the other games has most likely been ported over. Quite a huge amount of SMAS enemies have been ported over and easily insertable with Sprite Tool/PIXI/Daiyousei/etc. We have "AddmusicK" to easily insert music. We even have a PowerUps patch that includes a majority of SMB3's (and other Mario games') power ups.

Really, with all the advancement, there's no reason not to choose SMW over the others.

Yeah, have you played both original games? Both games had massive differences, here's a quick rundown:
-Ice physics
-Slopes
-Running/P-Speed (most noticeable one, in SMB3 you got a burst of speed and went really fast, in SMW you gradually build speed)
-Jumping (SMB3 was floatier)
-Midair control (SMW's is easier, SMB3's was a bit harder)
Probably more, I'm not gonna try and delve into it too much more

Even better, with some hex and ASM manipulation, possibly even Hex alone, I've never tried it, but I believe you can even make a believable recreation of SMB1-3's physics with some tweaking to Mario's X and Y speed handles.

I have Super Mario All Stars on the SNES.
