Man, that Banjo Kazooie reveal was a call back to King K. Rool's trailer. Not only for a similar theme (showcase of hero vs. villians, scene takes place in and at DK's house, bait and switch) but also is the second revealed character at the end of the direct (the first one are the DQ heroes at the beginning of the direct which mirrors Simon's trailer). Sadly, they spoiled
Darkhon
in the trailer.

I only know what Dragon Quest is from Fortune Street for the Wii. I don't remember seeing the character they showed in the trailer (Hero? Is that their name?).

Given that the various skins are different heroes, the name is kept generic as "Hero". It's a bit similar to the Animal Crossing villager who's just named "Villager" in Smash Bros (with the difference that you can name the villager in AC).

Is Dragon Quest like The Legend of Zelda in some way? The characters resemble Link too much... heck, the slimes could resemble Chu jellies too.

Never played it but I know that Dragon Quest is a JRPG, not an Action-Adventure (they both are fantasy games, though). So it's better to compare it to Final Fantasy, especially since they were competiting before Square Soft (owner of FF) merged with Enix (owner of DQ) to Square Enix.

Okay, my layout looks ugly.
The thing is that the Dragon Quest heroes literally don't have names (you have to input their names when starting each respective game), and as far as I know, they don't provide placeholders or default names for them. I'm pretty sure that's on purprose and from what I know, it's actually become canon to just refer to the Dragon Quest protagonists as "hero" (like in the manual or whatever), so that's actually the correct way to call them in Smash. For simplicity, just assume that their names were literally "Hero". I mean, there's video game characters called "Error", what not video game characters called "Hero"?

Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!

Not too familiar with Dragon Quest myself gameplay-wise, but this twitter thread will help explain its cultural impact pretty well.
I read that thread earlier today, and it also just made me so happy. It's actually so cool to learn about how big of an impact Dragon Quest actually had, and just how exciting The Hero's reveal really is. In my opinion, we couldn't have asked for a better pairing of Smash characters to reveal in the same Direct.

We, over on SmashBoards, are writting a letter with many messages from Banjo & Kazooie supporters to Nintendo, Microsoft, Rare Ltd., Sakurai and everyone in-between to thank them so much for bringing Banjo & Kazooie back to Nintendo and in Smash no less. Me and the head of this project, JamesDNaux, invite you all to do the same if you want to.

The list of people signing and (optionally) leaving messages of their own is already in the hundreds which is amazing. #smrpg{<3}

I was wondering if Nintendo's partnership with Microsoft was going to make it easier for Banjo-Kazooie to come back to Nintendo's consoles slowly.

Looks like it happened earlier than I was expecting!

An update on the Banjo & Kazooie thank you project can be found here. For any further updates, please visit the SmashBoards thread that I linked in the previous sentence.

We'd like to thank everyone from this site who signed!

Edit: You can check this thread instead.

Since I was at something important, I missed the direct (F in the chat)...
The day after, my friend tried to troll me by telling me that Minecraft Steve was announced, but I knew he was just kidding, since I saw that trailer A G E S ago... Then he showed me the Banjo trailer and told him "Nice fanmade, yo...", but as soon as I saw it was a real thing, I got hyped as crap (I almost threw my t-shirt into oblivion)...
I bought the fighters pass yesterday, so I'll get my boi the Joker

And the hero from Dragon Quest (but who cares about him anymore lol)
If Geno gets confirmed (which may not happen) I'll name my SMW romhack "ObamA MariO's GaY QuesT FoR DespacitO ShardS OwO"
