Hey guys,

I am working on an improvement hack for Yoshi's Island, the focus will be removing/replacing annoying sounds, stop Mario crying, improve graphics, bugfixes etc. I would like community feedback and input to further improve the game. Suggestions more than welcome:

Completed:

*Mario will no longer cry and has graphics have been replaced while inside a bubble.
*Alarm sound (SFXx58) now replaced with lesser alarm (SFXx57) as it is less irritating.
*Red Coins are now properly red. -Thank you Doggycharly!
*All mouse sound effects (SFXx75) replaced with chirp sound (SFXx5A) which is very similar sounding but less ear-piercing.
*Ice no longer screeches.
*Winding sound effects of heavy objects on a chain no longer screech (SFXx5A) and replaced with correct winding sound (SFXx1B)
*Winding “frying pan dong” sound (SFXx2F) removed.

I will also add the following patch:
* Yoshi's Island graphics enhanced https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewthread&t=87674

Optional:
*Always Start & Select: https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=13210

To be completed:
*Watermelon bugfix

Consideration:
*Use items in bosses (will make 100% runs easier, but might cause bugs).

Red coins!

change offset x66BFE to 02 and red coin sprite will use red palette, no graphic or palette edits requited#tb{;)}

this only affects the red coin sprite, the other coin sprites are unaffected

Edit 2:

Underwater coins have issues, to correct it change the following

66B71 [D0] Change to 80
66BFE [04] Change to 02
66C1B [D0] Change to 80

This will fix both red coins and underwater red coins:
Side effect, no more underwater coin graphic.

So, making red coins not being camouflaged it's an improvement? I'm guessing you're aiming for players not used with YI or something (not a bad idea though, but it changes the game notably)

Anyway, I'd suggest to make the following edit:

Changing x19DAD from [10] to [00], this is for disable the pause when Yoshi eats a watermelon, so this will work as the same as YI GBA.

There should be another actual improvements you can do to the rom but in this moment I can't remember. Also, the enhanced graphics is a good choice #smw{:TUP:}

Good suggestion for the watermelons, I'll include it in the hack.

The main reason is because the graphic for the red coins already have a glint of red, however it also shares this graphic with single stationary coins and balloon coins. Its easy to tell which coins are red and it feels more natural replacing them with a full red palette. I might include this as an optional patch if people would not like this.

I updated my main post as well as it has come a long way since my last post.
