quick reminder that there are 2 hours left before the 24 hour grace period begins! for every ceil(hour) <= 24 after the deadline you will lose 1 point off your score!

Procrastinated and can't finish my *entry #smrpg{haha}

I blame PetitemMM for not handling the triplets properly and forcing me to write everything manually. So much for my new basement killer with Roland Tru-Violin TM.

At least y'all get some more points!

Tbh it wasn't even a valid entry. Q1 1996 Arcade game #fim{XD}
The author of kaiko has requested the original song be linked, so I'll oblige.

If anyone wants the original songs of their ports linked for future rounds, let me know and I'll note them in the voting posts.

I guess the problem would be dealing with original compositions but I think it is a good idea to include that [hopefully] for all future entries. Knowing the source material may give voters a better idea of what's going on with songs. Not exactly useful for those who listen once and done but those who play them multiple times may find it helpful.

This round, however, sampling seemed to play a larger role than song selection.
I'm against forcing the original song to be posted for every entry, because the entrant should be given the option to have their port be criticized for what it is, not for what it was (originally) meant to be.

Also, comparison with the original material may be unfavorable when the person voting has no clue about the limitations involved with the SPC700, the implicit ones in the round and those that come with the original song and its source material.

I see where your coming from but you can also look at it as convenience (like mp3 postings) for those not willing to google (with the info.) That's also assuming they care about the source material. The voters don't HAVE to look at the original but it's there for them if they're interested, they may genuinely like the song and want to hear where it's from/derived.

Song selection is weighted rather heavily among voters. Based on previous judges; those that know the source material don't seem bothered by the accuracy of ports. It's usually down to whether it sounds [subjectively] good and if they like your song. Having free judges means there is significant variation on how the entry is graded and weighted, statistically speaking having access to the source material would affect the entry's score within a margin of error provided the voter actually listened to it (the source) without previously encountering it.

Talk too much but I think it's a great idea, more power to voters. Not having it (or by request) is fine but I see it more positively like the mp3s.
Round 4 results:

1. Gloomy - adon with score 81.46
2. Sinc-X - rough with score 77.73 (80.73 -3pts @ -1pt/hr)
3. Jimmy - stage9 with score 77.49 (79.49 -2pts @ -1pt/hr)
4. YuzuMSX - Dragon Saber with score 71.16
5. Giftshaven - fightingthunder with score 60.87
6. Ultima - flaptowardsthehope with score 60.02
7. Torchkas - kaiko with score 40.17

Some really close scores this time! Congrats to Gloomy for the win.

(i got lazy and forgot to do personal comments LOL. this was my song ftr)

ROUND 5 CHALLENGE

The Choosing Of The Challenge

Port or compose a song using at least one vocal sample. It could be spoken/sung/rapped/beatboxed/etc. as long as it comes from a human mouth. Gonna also add a reminder that synthetic choirs are NOT HUMAN and thus don't count for this requirement; it must be an actual human mouth noise.

Round 5 is due Saturday, August 11th at 16:00 PT / 19:00 ET!
A really tight race on the top three. I can see why, they were definitely pretty good. Glad I finally got to vote on one of these things and can't wait for the next round! :)

That Old Grandfather Who Tells You Strange Stories of SMW Hacking

Check out the progress of my new hack! Yes. I'm actually working on a full project this time. :)
If I find a way to transform a sample into a series of single-cycle loops, then change the sample's loop point at 30fps (to compress voice), would the resulting waveform be legal? It is effectively a slightly shuffled series of single cycles with identical timbre as the original sample, but using around 1/10th the space (allowing for better treble reproduction than most snes vocals).
So uh, just curious, but human voice samples/loops from random sample packs still count as human right? Just wanting to know before I do anything with this lol
Layout by Mathos
yeah ofc as long as theyre human and not synthesized. it def doesnt have to be your own voice or anything

Here's how I see it:

•Voice samples that are sung, or can be recreated in A Capella rather easily.
Does count

•Voice samples that are processed, synthesized, and sound like it belongs in Dubstep.
Does not count

I really don't think this should be allowed since it's basically the equivalent of vocaloid.

I think it should because it technically uses only portions of the original waveform of the human voice. I mean, you'd definitely be allowed to cut a human voice sample into 2 anyway.

I mean, if you want to be very technical, a plain recording of a human voice is not a human voice itself, but that would disqualify everything, wouldn't it?

And before anyone tells me I'm just looking for loopholes, the biggest reason people would do something like this is because ARAM is a bitch. You would usually only get, like, 20-something kilobytes of space for samples due to globals and things like that.

The entire point is to work with the limitations you have. It is a loophole.

Vocaloid is also just a recording of a human voice, but looped.

And I feel like that should be a valid way to work with the limitations you have. Vocaloid is kind of a grey area, to be honest, but I think just looping human voices is too simple to be considered synthesis.

it was clarified by the challenge author at some point in the discord that the intent was to get ppl out of their comfort zones with samples and not necessarily to sound natural/pure/unedited/whatever. you're free to make of that what you will--in the end though its almost guaranteed that more natural sounding samples will sound better anyway unlike vocaloid and the like which sound like actual garbage

Some SNES examples I could think from the top of my head....
Ballz 3D
Bebe's Kids
Clay Fighter Theme, it might use sample streaming?
Didn't include Tales of Phantasia because we know it does.

Now supposedly we could still play it lame and use the sample once right? E.g. Mario Party 3 Announcer "Start!" <Insert Music>

I agree. The exact point of looping is to save memory in ANY audio system. If I record the First Seat Cellists playing F#4 for 48 seconds instead of 8s it's going to take 6x the amount of space. Space that COULD be used to record them playing pianissimo, piano, mezzo-forte, etc.

Sinc-X already clarified so this post is redundant but I think a good example is the original Star Fox
That is accordingly the voices are recycled from "Wing Damage" & "Twin Blaster."

those aren't single cycle waveforms

Yes, I misinterpreted what was going on.

What Nobody is talking about is breaking up a vocal sample into various, single cycle samples and reconstructing the original sound via the aforementioned. It's clever tricky not too dissimilar from David Wise. The source sample came from a human voice and the original intent was to save space, not make a vocaloid (which might just be a side effect.)
