Tip: A common level trope to avoid is "item babysitting". This involves forcing the player to carry P-Switches, springboards, or other items all around the level. Usually, this doesn't end up being very fun or engaging, so use another level gimmick if you can.

what

$00E2D3 | 1 byte | Debug | DEBUG: Infinite star (set to 00 to activate.) Alternatively, you can change to FF to give Mario a constant palette cycling effect (without the invincibility or sparkles.)

That's a branch distance. A branch of $FF will branch into the branch distance, thus interpreting the $FF as an opcode... that'll trigger a long chain of opcode misalignment, which makes me surprised this doesn't just crash. Next time, maybe you should look at what you're modifying in one of the disassembiles.
