That's a branch distance. A branch of $FF will branch into the branch distance, thus interpreting the $FF as an opcode... that'll trigger a long chain of opcode misalignment, which makes me surprised this doesn't just crash. Next time, maybe you should look at what you're modifying in one of the disassembiles.
