Super Mario World: The Mysterious Island

Standard

Hi! I'm new to the forums. I've been into SMW hacking on and off for about 12 years (I started at about age 10, no joke) and I decided to join the forums for help with a hack I've decided to make.

It's called Super Mario World: The Mysterious Island. It features custom graphics (including tiles made from scratch by me), custom music, custom sprites, custom blocks, and ASM.

I'm still thinking of a story, but I'm thinking it will be something along the lines of this:
Mario and friends were enjoying a cruise, when suddenly their ship got sucked into a mysterious whirlpool. They woke up on a strange island. Upon building a raft and attempting to sail back home, they discovered that sailing away from the island only brings them right back to the island. The only way to break the cycle and get home is through the volcano in the center of the island. However, it appears the volcano doesn't want them to leave...

Here's some screenshots of progress so far:

World 1-2: Coral Caverns:

Any comments/constructive criticism is welcome!
Yes I'm a furry. Is that a problem?
This looks very interesting, and I like the style you're going for with the graphics. I suggest that you change the palette of the clouds in the first two screenshots to match the sky color better as grey looks a bit out of place there.

Assuming the shapes in that submap aren't final since you said it's unfinished, I'd also suggest you to try making that beach segment less "squary".

Good luck with the hack - it's already off to a nice start!
Progress on World 1-3: Sand Castle Chaos. This is the first level with Yoshi.

I also changed the palette on the clouds in World 1-1 and made the beach section of the overworld more rounded. (Again, the overworld is not done. I am aware there are a few flaws.)

Looks nice so far. The improvement on the submap is better, but I think that part towards the left really needs something. It seems empty. Either add something like some raised land masses or try to take away some of it to make it look more natural if you get my drift.

Otherwise, a competent project so far. Keep it up!

More updates!!! Work and other things have kept me really busy, but I decided today to do more work on this hack.

World 1-3 is complete, so here's some previews of World 1-4: High in the Sky:

And also, I did some more work on the overworld. I'd say it's coming along pretty good so far! Just needs some more decorations.

The levels are looking rather nice so far and the submap looks nice as well. The on;y thing I could suggest is adding decorations. (Which you already mentioned.)

Other than that, the hack looks good so far!

Really loving the graphics used for Sand Castle Chaos. Did you draw them from scratch?

Not really sure about that overworld, tought. I think it looks a little artificial due to the "flat" borders. Maybe add some ondulations?

Afaik, the sand castle graphics aren't drawn from scratch by MaxtheFox, the ones in the original color are in Super Mario All-Stars (Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels).
I have a Discord server as well! (by joining, you agree to the rules)

Basically, I believe in peace and bashing two bricks together.

I Ike the graphic style in this game. The overworld is also good, it's amazing what you done to the bridges to make slopes in landscape, doesn't happen often. #lm{owextile}
