I'm probably not the right audience for these type of hacks (nintendo-like design with easy and rather flat levels).
However I feel like the hack succeeds in recreating that style, with fun to play levels for the more casual players.
The hack is also really aestheticly pleasing. The only real issue I recall (other than the one Green Jerry mentioned) is the slowdown in "Mondo Plains".
