Howdy! It’s time for C3 again, and this time we have something neat to show off!

TRAILER

You see a lot of our features in the trailer, which is why I call it the Feature Trailer (TM). We’re planning to make lots of levels in the near future so stay tuned for that.

Here’s something PercentN has been working on:

I’ll leave it to your imagination as to what it’s for. For now, let’s just say we’re doing something cool with the overworld. For more stuff like screenshots and gifs and whatnot, check out our WIP thread!

This is an enemy we’ve made recently too. Check out the GOOMBAS THAT WILL PIERCE THE HEAVENS!!

Now click those links and stay tuned! Happy C3 everyone!

I love seeing stuff about this hack.

Its looking so ambitious so far and effort is showing in spades. :O
The animation detail in the sprites is really amazing as they are small touches that make the hack feel more alive and dynamic.

The Co-op mode as well is looking sweet. Great work everyone.
I was just wondering if you had a C3 booth, and there you are. #tb{:)}

You guys really are leaving no stone unturned in SMW's engine - it's almost hard to believe this would fit on an SNES cartridge. This hack looks like it'll be a ton of fun to play just for the interesting features it's packed with, and I hope you'll be able to finish the project and have it live up to the hype.

It's always nice to see more progress on this hack. I am actually excited for it, which isn't true for very many hacks nowadays. I look forward to what else you guys will come up with.
holy $hit
Coop mode already sold me on this. The rest is just gravy. Really awesome gravy.
I'm genuinely hyped for this. I can't wait to get my hands on this, everything looks outstanding!

Saying that your romhack is the best romhack sounds really odd to me.
Mostly arrogant.

That aside this really looks great and it will probably be the most impressive SMW Hack for quite some time if this gets released. But, some of the controls of the other characters look very wonky and weird to me in the gameplay. I hope it plays better then it looks.
Also proper co-op is straight up amazing.

WOW! If there's one thing that can definitely be said about this hack it's that it's likely the most elaborate SMW hack to see the light of day so far. One thing that I appreciate in particular is that you use animations more wisely than many hacks. I wouldn't say that the game didn't have any rough edges left in this area - there certainly are still a few choppy and somewhat abrupt animations in the game, especially with the player characters - on the custom bosses, however, you've done a great animation job. Your bosses actually clearly communicate their actions and states via animations, and that's one of the most important aspects of good boss design, yet too many SMW hacks lack precisely this (it's the reason why very few even halfway decent Custom Noob Bosses exist). I'm actually pretty impressed by what you've presented and this might now actually be the SMW hack I'm most looking forward to.

Feel free to visit my website/blog - it now isn't actually shit anymore!
Looks very amazing and technically impressive. The ASM is fantastic and, as mentioned, those boss animations are superb. The graphics are especially nice, and I'm surprised at how good the bosses look. Actually, all the sprite graphics looks great (nice work Eminus).

One thing I will say is that I believe this project would benefit further from getting a few people who specialize in level design. Overall great work!
@everyone
Thanks a lot for the feedback. It really warms the heart guys <3

We are a little arrogant sometimes, it’s true. What we mean by our statement is that we’re aiming to make the best hack ever. We’re certainly not sitting on the best hack right now, but we’re trying to make it. If we didn’t believe that, we would never dare take enough risks to make it happen. That’s what I believe, anyway.
People very often comment on the new characters’ controls. It’s something we’re debating quite a bit right now so it’s very possible it will be vastly different by the time the hack is done.

Thank you so much for noticing the effort we put into the bosses! For me personally, a good boss fight is the best part of any game that has it. We try really hard to make our bosses worth the time and effort it takes to fight them. We also plan to have a lot of bosses in this hack, so the fact that people appreciate what we’ve made thus far is very encouraging.

We’ve actually been looking to get some dedicated level designers on this project. We’re not quite there yet but we definitely know that it’s currently an area that lacks a little bit.

I always enjoy it when this project turns back up, because something incredible is always right around the corner. Your team is committed to presenting a polished, coherent experience, and your individual talents bring out the best in one another's work (as any good team's should) - I respect your efforts immensely, and I'll be watching for what happens next.

By the by, there hasn't been a tech demo of sorts for this game yet, has there? Even just the "finished enough" characters in a simple room to let people get a feel for the current controls/physics? As one who also works with per-character physics changes, I worry that even if everything is laboriously tuned to my liking, people might still balk at the feel of the controls simply because they're different than those used in the 50 other hacks they've played. I'm curious if you've given any thought to/have any opinions on this uncanny tendency to evaluate a SMW ROM hack as one of many SMW ROM hacks rather than as its own game, even following highly extensive changes (doubly so for using SMW-esque assets).

I'm also going to go ahead and echo the praise on the boss work - truly fluid stuff, right there.

And for what it's worth, the "best hack ever" claim doesn't read as particularly arrogant to me, personally. I hear it more as a friendly challenge - "You think you could make an even better hack? Then do it! Bring your absolute best, 'cause that's what we aim to do!" (Feel free to reign me in if I'm way off the mark on this one.)
Thanks for your feedback Maarfy! You’re absolutely right with your interpretation of “the best hack ever”; it’s definitely a challenge, and a very positive one. After all, if someone beats us and makes an even better hack, then that means everyone has an even better hack to play, which is awesome.

We did release a demo for Winter C3 2016. You can give it a whirl if you want but be warned that it’s pretty buggy, especially with the co-op. We plan to release a new, far superior demo next C3. That demo will have several characters to play as and everything in it will hopefully be fully functional.

I'm stupidly happy with how this silly little sprite turned out. It's super easy to use, too, just place them all totem-like in Lunar Magic and there you go. Might release this one on C3 (hint hint).

so whats the story with this? 👀
forever & always
I'll let Eric answer that question when he's available. :D

But in the mean time, here's a tile set I'm working on. The level exists, but I haven't ported it over yet. So this is all you get #smrpg{:D}

Well, originally it just carried a mushroom under a tray, and Eminus suggested that if it can carry a mushroom it should be able to carry other things too. It turns out that carried goombas can also carry things, and so this sprite was born. It’s a lot of fun to play with and I like it a lot.

I didn’t quite have the time to release it for C3 but I might release it later.
