If the romhack is pre-2012, ZSNES.
If the romhack is post-2012, SNES9X.
If the romhack is post-2012, and you have a four-digit priced potent computer with specs that makes bargain hunters cry, BSNES.

That's how simple it is to narrow it down. I'd honestly download all three emulators. (or the first two if you are a filthy low-income swine like I am)

-----------

STELLA!
Most of my needs are thoroughly met through snes9x.
Once I get a more powerful computer I hope to switch to bsnes exclusively because it's a more accepted emulator for speedrunning (although snes9x works). But I'm a poor mfer that is making practically no money. #w{:<}
I used to play only on ZSNES, but after seeing that it doesn't work that well with games... Snes9x would be my choice.
I don't go into bsnes or CPU-intensive emulators, because it'll likely heat up my CPU too much and I don't need that. The computer went through a lot already.

C'mon, man, I try my best.

SAN値!ピンチ!
Always used to use ZSNES until ZMZ arrived and then used that. THEN recently switched to higan/bsnes or whatever they're calling it these days.

Although I do have all of them installed and available if required, especially when it comes to playing really old hacks that break on anything new.
Snes9x for sure

Oh sorry I don't even noticed that the post was from 1 year ago.
I saw this thread in the first results and so I tought this was recent.

Even though this is an older thread Osaka still added a post of value and wasn't derailing anything. General Discussion threads are usually a but more open to longer reply times.
I prefer zsnes. It has a ntsc filter which makes a look like ur playing it on an old tv.

beware of Zsnes it may have some filters you like but it's really outdated and newer hacks can break on it especially anything that uses sa-1 since it doesn't emulate it correctly.

As Ninja Boy said, Zsnes is not recommended because it is very outdated (it was last updated in 2007) and its emulation is inaccurate, so many newer hacks might break on it.

If you like Zsnes' GUI and functions, i'd recommend you give ZMZ a try, it was made using Zsnes GUI but with an accurate core, and it also has the NTSC filter you mentioned.

My Youtube Channel
Just to add a little bit more info to ZMZ it can use either a snes9x or bsnes core so depending on your system one may work better than the other.
Since I found out about OpenEmu I am stuck with this emulator
https://openemu.org/

if you prefer more details here is the GitHub repository
https://github.com/OpenEmu

But keep in mind this emulator is for macOS only. #smw{;)}
I use Higan and was surprised to not even see it mentioned in this thread. Any reason why? I always thought it was one of the best.
I guess it's because a lot of people here use BSNES over Higan. It has (probably) the same amount of accuracy, but is more lightweight and (in my opinion) also a bit more practical to work with in some regards. I guess you could say that Higan is the Swiss army knive of emulators, but sometimes you just want a simple, sharp kitchen knive, and BSNES is pretty much that.

--------------------
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
Higan is bsnes in a way.
bsnes is the Super Nintendo core of Higan just packaged separately with some extra features you don't get if you use Higan.
Oh that totally makes sense!

I guess I mostly just play which seems to be ideal for Higan. Thanks for the info!
