Mario's on a New Adventure is my attempt to create a hack that is on par with my favorite ROM hack series in existence! The 'VIP & Wall Mix' Series! Now of course those games were collaborations and had a lot of cosmetic and aesthetic problems that this game won't have, but I aim to emulate its difficulty and difficulty curve, along with its sense of humor. I'm also trying to make it in a design and difficulty that I personally enjoy playing (which is generally 'hard' or 'very hard' because I'm a masochist and love a challenge) usually without saves, and as legitimately as possible... Hopefully VIP style design is acceptable on this site, haha. Regardless! This my thread for the hack! It will be updated periodically with progress throughout the coming weeks and months!

Difficulty: Hard-Very Hard
Length: To be determined
Story: One day, Mario had an Adventure because Peach

Upcoming are screenshots of the the first two levels and yellow switch palace of this hack in progress. They are "complete," largely with vanilla graphics. Except they do also have custom music, and the switch palace has custom blocks.

There is a 4th level almost completed, and the overworld is also being redone. Note that I won't be updating this super regularly, I want there to be some element of secrecy ;P

Constructive criticism welcomed and very much appreciated!I put 'complete' in quotes because it's really up to you guys whether it's truly complete or not.

Also I hope those screenshots aren't too big >.<
Those levels surely look good for now, gameplayI and gfx-wise.

That black outline of the ? and turn blocks feels a little weird. Maybe add some yellow pixels at the corner?
Yeah I can do that.
On the innermost corner?
On all four corners, ideally, to give the outline a consistent thickness.

More like this?

It is becoming increasingly unlikely that this game will have any sort of in-depth story line.
Both because I'm not creative enough to come up with one, and because I personally prefer gameplay over story usually.
World 1 map is officially complete! Screenshot coming soon...
That's a... well... it's an alright map, but I'm really just looking at all the errors on it.
First off, the top middle island is like some sort of optical illusion since the ground doesn't even match where the sea-line is, and there's a missing cliff tile as well. The island below that also has what I presume to be is a waterfall, but it looks more like a cavern going inside it or something which, personally, looks pretty weird. Also, there's some cutoffness over on the right with the ground as well as a few missing corner tiles.
Also, is there a reason the bridge pieces are green?
I have a DeviantArt, if you do want to see my art on there. I don't really visit it much now, though.

Green is the only realistic color you can choose for the bridge colors in the Vanilla Yoshi's Island submap.

I can fix the cutoff, and make the the top island a little less wonky looking.

That's not a waterfall. If it was a would've used waterfall tiles. It is a small cavern running through the muddle section of the island, with thin ground beneath. If anything I can increase the thickness of the ground.

Accidentally made Texas, haha~ (obviously a work in progress :/ )
Updated world 1 map to fix some cutoff and other aesthetic issues:

Making the levels sure is more amusing than making the overworld. :(

Also, this is an early version of the map for world 2 and maybe some of world 3. Please leave feedback! Decorations and perhaps terrain will be added later if and when it's decided that the general shape and appearance is passable.
It also looks like a whale. I shit you not I did not intend for this.

The OW maps look good, except for some perspective errors (specially noticeable near the waterfall on the second-world OW). I also don't like the abrupt transition from brown to greenish near that pipe in W2, altough this is more of a personal preference.
I knew the waterfall looked sorta off, but I'm at a loss as to what to do to make it look right. I suppose I could add some more curvature to the cliff, but that doesn't necessarily fix the waterfall issue. |-O
Since I have begun working on world 2, I figured I'd post some screen shots on my progress. Here are the first three levels of world 2.

Made a major improvement to the world 2 map by fixing the odd perspective of the waterfall and cliff and making the transition from brown to green colored ground a little more pleasing by separating them slightly and adding a bridge.

The perspective looks way better now. I think moving the bridge and the island one 8x8 tile to the top would be better as for now it seems like the bridge "enters" into the grassland.
I'm working on it.

Important screenshots are back!
It looks great! The overworld is good and the levels remind me of some Japanese hacks, apart from VIP and Wall series. Looking forward to play this. If you want, I can betatest the hack whenever you want.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the positive feedback there, buddy!
I'm aiming to emulate VIP of course, but all Japanese hacks seem to to be pretty unique so I'll take it, haha
