What's happened with the conversion of BNK to BRR ports?
There's nothing about this.

Reminder to staff: When update a BNK to BRR conversion, report these to the music section similar like these.

They're happening, trust me. At the moment, they've been low priority - we have one person taking care of the conversions, compared to two who actively deal with obsoletes and not including the people who weigh in on various discussions. It's a lot of internal stuff, which isn't hush-hush by any means, but it isn't something I've ever discussed in public till right now. We'll be making a post of all the .bnk ports when they're done (there aren't that many, really). Whether .bnk archives will happen remain to be seen.
Just a li'l question I wanted to ask. Will there be a thread for music packs that have been dissolved so far?

This is gonna be be one of the best changes in music section yet. I don't know who had an idea to pack all ports whose only connection was the author in one submission. It only makes finding certain songs harder.
I have a Discord server as well!

I'm seconding Emerald Shell's question, considering I recently see a port from Wyatt Croucher's pack being submitted separately.

I think the only packs which are packaged that way are the RednGreen and Wyatt packs? Honestly I can understand the point of packaging them (even when I disagree with that). Also, considering there wasn't a rule on how to submit files beore (in terms of packaging them "properly"), it was also faster to do that way, considering both packs have arround 20 or more ports. Happily this is changing now :)

highly likely, yes! i may post them either in a separate removal log (when the pack itself is gone, either standalone or in duplicates/obsoletes) or give them their own thread. either way, it will be logged in some capacity.

regarding the wyatt port: it was a fix made by tcdw. since the packs are gonna be dissolved eventually, it made more sense to submit it standalone rather than resubmit the entire pack.
Hello!!!!!!!!

After some minor discussion that spurred in this thread, we're pleased to announce some minor changes to the tag list!

First off, we're pleased to bring to you a tag for all your 8-bit and fakebit songs. We now have the retro tag, which encompasses any songs that primarily stick to 8-bit pulse waves (for sampled) or even songs that primarily use @0 (for unsampled). Such examples include Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal - Kanto Gym Leader Battle and Synthesis - Combat Caves. Calling such songs 8-bit can be a bit of a misnomer, same with chiptune. However, "wave-based pulse width oscillator programmable sound generator yadda yadda" isn't a very good tag name either. Still, it's a good tag name that encompasses what the average hacker making an 8-bit styled hack would want, so I hope they especially enjoy this tag when browsing the music section!

Secondly, there's been demand for a while for a snow tag. This can be applied to any happy-sounding ho ho ho and jolly good fun songs, such as Donkey Kong Country 2 - In A Snow-bound Land, Super Mario Kart - Vanilla Lake or even Sonic Advance - Ice Mountain Zone Act 1 to name a few examples.

However, we'll also be removing the crystal tag - we feel there's a bit too much overlap between ice and cave. Heck, there were only, like, 9 songs with the tag, and at the time of posting this retro's already beating it out and it's only been live for less than an hour! We're still open to tag suggestions as we strive to make the most comprehensive list possible for your SMW Music needs. If you have any, post here, or PM one of us and we'll give it some consideration!
What do you think about replacing an urban tag with a city tag? It might be easier for people to find songs fitting in urban levels under this tag.
I have a Discord server as well!

We've also gone ahead and changed battle to boss. We felt it made more sense as a more commonly searched tag - in fact, at the time of conversion, boss (an unofficial tag, mind you) had more tags (326) than battle (155)! The numbers don't lie, it's a much more preferred keyword. And the distinction therein kinda doesn't really matter since it's not like SMW is a turn based RPG anyway lol

It's under consideration. Personally, I'm not too sure - they both encompass the same thing, and some might confuse city with the town tag. We're still deliberating it, though, and I'll update when we come to a consensus.
Hey, we're due for an update, aren't we?

Duplicate ports:

We're happy to announce that the majority of duplicate/obsolete ports have been sorted out! While there's probably a few we missed, and more will inevitably pile up as songs come and go,
we can safely say this portion of remoderation is (for the most part) wrapped up. Of course, if something comes up that we don't know about or neglected to list in this thread, do let us know and we'll take care of it asap.

Music pack dissolution:

The RednGreen pack was recently dissolved, with very few tracks being lost (as they didn't fit or were already on the section). It was asked before how they would be archived: you'll find this one in the Duplicates & Obsolete ports thread (like so) as the majority of songs here were duplicates . Future dissolutions may vary, though, as some could be removed for low quality reasons. Likely in the future they'll get their own threads like standard rejections.

Low quality removals:

These are going smoothly, primarily thanks to the help of Giftshaven. We'll still accept suggestions on songs that don't hold up to today's standards. People wondered why we post removal reasons for the old songs - note that deprecated songs posted here are available for you to fix, if you'd like! Those who'd like to get their feet wet in MML editing or those who simply want to restore old songs can refer to the reasons listed to fix them. Though I'm certain some would rather just redo ports themselves, the option's there for other people who'd like a skeleton to work from.

Tags:

Firstly, oops: sorry I forgot to actually update this, but we've opted to keep the urban tag as is. However, we got a request in submission notes regarding a potential new tag. With this and some ports that came up following a music pack dissolution, the following new tags are being implemented! Say hello to:

ambient - For moody, atmospheric ports with no real fast melodies to speak of. usually would coexist with environmental songs as well, more below.
Examples: (1) (2) (3)
Non-section examples: (1) (2)

mysterious - For slower, less hectic songs that allow the listener to breathe and think. Generally would apply to mellow songs, such as some puzzle game soundtracks.
Examples: (1) (2) (3)
Non-section examples: (1) (2)

environmental - For songs that utilize environmental noises, either as a background sound alone or in conjunction the song. Generally applies to songs that have weather or animal sounds, though mechanical and human-made sounds can be considered too.
Examples: (1) (2) (3)
Non-section examples: (1) (2)

If you've any suggestions for these, or suggestions for new tags, you're free to provide them here, on Discord or in private messages.

BRR stuff:

Lastly, .BNK conversions are still at a halt, but they'll be done in due time, pinky swear. One of the music packs will even rely on this, as well. There's a lot of songs to be done, so be patient as we sort them all out. Related to BRRs, though: since Pinci came back on board, we've been in the preliminary talks regarding a BRR guidelines revision. Some other plans that I won't address quite yet are in the works, but do stay tuned for more news on BRRs. Though it's not quite in the realm of remoderation, it still pertains to stuff for musicians on this site, so it's worth mentioning regardless.

I think that's all the news so far regarding the remoderation. It's still going smooth, but we're hoping to have everything done by the end of the year at least, but assuming the worst, at the very latest it'll be complete by March 2020. Hopefully, it'll be on the quicker end, of course, and we're hoping for no complications. We're working hard to get this section up to par to meet the quality standard and consistency our users deserve, so I thank you for your understanding and patience! The music section is definitely the largest single resource section for SMW hacking, and the music team and I are working hard to ensure it's the greatest! If you have any comments or concern, feel free to let us know here. Thank you!!!

Super Mario RPG - Welcome to Booster Tower has two unsampled versions living up to today's standards and I can't tell whether one or both of them should stay. Are you freaking blind?! Sorry I was rough about this, I think this should've been noticed already.

Also, is this good enough to stay here? This one could've used two SMW samples being more similar to FFIV ones, one of them being trumpet. And there's a port of Theme of Bass from Mega Man 7 which I asked Giftshaven to preview and he thought it was fine. I think it could've been made better, even back in 2011. Am I the only one who dislikes this port then? I'm certain it'll get obsoleted. If no one's interested in making a better unsampled port, I'll have to learn porting music on my own. Oh, and why the heck does this have 3.8 stars?

Nopony breaks a Pinky promise, so don't break it.

And still, some popular or particularly good tunes don't get love they deserve and more obscure ones do.

Also, y u no use site feed on Discord to see new comments on musical submissions?! You can tell which submissions are from SMW Music sections. I didn't want to be rude again, I just wanted to tell you how it could help you moderate if someone commented on certain submissions.

Nevertheless, thanks for the update!

Is there a list with all .bnk music? I could probably help you guys with that, if it's allowed! I don't have much time nowadays to port, but .bnk conversion isn't very difficult from my experience, so I might be able to work on that in my free time. #tb{:p}

Unless you ask me to convert something crazy like Disco Train...

Anyway, thanks for your hard work!

Set the sample usage filter to "Many" and go to the back page. There are probably a handful there you can find.

Here's a few for you:
Donkey Kong Country 3 - Hot Pursuit
The Final Phase - Total Rocked Out Edition
Donkey Kong Country 2 - Jib Jig

There are undoubtedly more.

of course! though the way we update files for this isn't available to normal users (editing the submission directly and updating the file so as to not bump the submission to the top), we can figure something out. dm me on discord or on the site!

you are like a little baby. watch this:

Welcome Tamaki and KKevinM as helpers for this remoderation! Both have shown solid initiative in wanting to help out, so they'll be assisting with the .bnk conversions.
Speaking of bnk conversions, would be nice if you leave a comment in the submissions when you update them, just like ASM mods have done with some recent blocks updates, so people can notice them more easily.
that's already a thing! but I prefer just leaving the notice in the description. the only difference is a site feed popup which doesn't add much of anything imo, but as far as it goes we do ensure conversions are labeled appropriately

It could be small, but indeed the difference is that normal users could hypothetically/eventually notice it, contrary to just editing the submission by standalone. Also consider that the notification system could help to it as well; as an actual example, I'm following this port so when you'll update it I could easily notice, instead of checking the description constantly to look if it was updated.

It's up to you anyway, I guess, but I just find this a weird way to do it, comparing it to ASM sections.
to be fair, there's no real standard when it comes to updating like that. it comes down to preference of manager and, to an extent, what people want. i'll consider doing comments from here on out if it really matters to people (though admittedly i didn't even consider alerts lmao, its a very solid point for it), and i suppose it'll be obvious if we standardize comments over description updates!

I agree with Daizo about the nostalgia thing. When making certain levels or hacks, I will sometimes use an old port on purpose to fit a certain feel.

Let's say someone wants to make an all-vanilla simple hack. They are probably gonna want to use the unsampled version of every port they use for consistency. Another example is a glitch/joke hack like YUMP, a hack that mimics old Japanese hacks by using lower quality ports, etc.

From purely a level design perspective, the best song is simply the song that fits the level best. 95% of that time, that song will also be the highest quality. However, for that 5% of the time, we need to make sure there is easy access to old ports. Which brings me to my next point:

If something in the remoderation gets removed that you really want access to, don't worry because we've got your back. As with the last remoderation that happened like a billion years ago, each song will be archived in its original format. As soon as remoderation is complete, a .zip archive will be uploaded containing each port that was removed. If a mistake is made and something is mislabeled or omitted, let us know and we'll rectify it ASAP. Additionally, if you feel something was removed in error or you disagree with anything done to your works, let me know and I'll address it.

I would like to mention that the sprite remoderation's solution to this issue was quite bad. Several sprites were missing on that archive, and a few sprites were named after the zip file that was submitted, so some important sprites were named "ghsjjfhhsjjfj" or "hhhhhhhh", which is extremely un-useful and made finding a couple sprites miserable (I literally downloaded every single sprite with a jibberish name to look for the right one). I know that this would mean extra work, but I'd really like to see the old songs named properly on the archive and that the archive is complete.

Also happy new year :D

I agree aswell, I did use older S.N.N. Cave Story ports when the new ones have already been released and are much better.

God I feel old.
Finally bothered to make a layout myself, because I know a decent amount of HTML/CSS.
