Banning most, if not all talk about politics is totally possible, leod. You just need strict enough rules and mods to enforce them. However, this comes at the risk of biased mods running free. Politics are subjective, after all, and nobody is without bias.

In this hypothetical scenario, a mod could deem anything they please to be "politics" if they wanted. Guidelines would still exist, of course, but in the end, what a moderator says carries a lot of weight as well. Moderators are meant to use their discretion to "fill in the gaps" wherever the guidelines aren't clear enough; it wouldn't really be called "moderating" otherwise. But I digress.

An environment like this would allow cartoonishly absurd situations to happen, like—for example—a humorless mod threatening people just for expressing a different opinion, while favoring users who share their opinion.

It would certainly be a flawed system, but it's entirely possible, leod.

Thankfully, the staff team we have makes threads like these, and considers what the users say to prevent that from happening (even if some of them are total nERDS #smrpg{<3} )
Regardless of whether it's a feasible option or not, I definitely don't think it's something we should pursue. I just don't see enough politically motivated hate or heated discussion happening beyond their proper forums (or ANYWHERE for that matter), so banning it would be like trying to fix something that's not broken and could cause a whole list of further unforeseen problems in the future.

Dear ThePat545,

I regret to inform you that after a brief investigation we have determined that actually, YOU are the biggest total nerd here.

I do hope this will have no ill-bearing on your life.

Sincerely,
FPzero, SMWCentral Management.
The problem with political/religious discussion is simple. It all devolves into personal interests, and almost all the time, neither side will back down for another. It's like this outside of the internet, but it is especially egregious on the internet. On literally every single other subject ever, people tend to be a lot more level-headed, but the discussion can and will turn sour as soon as Politics and Religion get involved.

I'm not going to suggest banning all discusson of politics/religion, because it'll inevitably happen, and you can't stop that. But what I generally suggest is to keep it to a minimum. Keep the discussion short. Because at the end of the day, it's always been a touchy subject that will almost never end well, and result in the blood pressure spike of everyone involved in the discussion.

This is why I never take part of such discussions. 95% of the time, it's not worth the headache.

You guys are thinking about this way too hard. Isn't this still a site primarily for SMW hacking? I don't see how this should really be a problem when religious discussion isn't vital to the central reason why most (all?) of us are here.

That's the point of the off-topic forums. GD and such. I'd say just let people have their conversations as they want, I don't see any reason to limit or restrict that unless someone is being blatantly flammatory (and it will be obvious whether or not that is the case based on the situation).

You're right. Discussion shouldn't have limits. But this is a topic that has proven time and time again to be extremely volatile, and it's not just here, but everywhere you go; even outside the internet. Someone will take what you say personally, and it just escalates from there. That's just the nature of Religion/Politics. I'm not saying to disallow such topics to be discussed, but if you're discussing those subjects with anyone, and you notice even just a slight hint of hostility between one or multiple others, I think that's a fine place to cut the discussion there before things get out of hand. Because let's face it, it's inevitable.

And while yes, this is a ROM-hacking site and that's primarily what we're all here for, and improvements towards the ROM-hacking portion should always be fielded, that's not to say improvements towards the goodwill of the user base here shouldn't be fielded, as they aren't independent from one another. This site should take pride in trying to improve both facets and continue improving.

Don't get me wrong, I don't disagree with you on this point necessarily, but wasn't one of the reasons why that "political correctness" thread last April was panned was because of how it came totally out of nowhere? I actively followed this site for years (especially in the years leading up to that thread) and I've never once noticed this topic ever being a major issue.

I've held my peace since that thread was made because I assumed everyone's memories of it would fade away, but it's been almost a year now since then and I still see people frequently bringing up the question of "but should we allow x?" when it just seems to me like people are still making an issue out of an issue that never really existed.

To your first paragraph about how the whole "anyone can possibly be offended" thing - again, you're not wrong per se, but why exactly does a ROM hacking site of all sites need to be the justice warrior for that? I've been on plenty of other forums over the years and SMWC is the only site I've ever been on that's actually made this big a deal over the problem for so long. It's really not that hard to figure out guys.*

*Disclaimer because I think one is obligatory with this particular community, no offense: no hostility is meant to be conveyed in this post, I respect all of you and I'm merely just stating my opinion, any hatred, whining, or contempt interpreted while reading this post is simply interpreted and not at all intended, etc etc etc

This short spammy post isn't worth the bump. Don't do this.

I don't see any continuing discussion in this thread so it's getting closed.
