It's great to see these OWs, they show their evolution and enhancement from 2009 to today. And also it's good to be revamping your hack.

It's definitely a creative idea to show off overworlds from such a long time period. It's interesting to see how your skills gradually got better to the point at which they're at today. I don't know if others will agree with me, but your first overworld is actually not that bad if we ignore the shapes. The top part of the map is certainly functional and imitates Super Mario Bros. 3 quite well.

In general, what I really like about your older style (the requests era) is the large landforms which still manage to create a lot of variety and use the available space well. This is quite noticeable in the night sky and in the last main overworld you showed, which is my personal favorite. The sky submap immediately after it isn't bad, either, but the edges of the clouds are a little too bright. In your last overworlds, the submaps are really nice, but the main overworld looks more like a collection of submaps than a single big continent - whether that's bad is, of course, up to one's personal preference.
Some of these look really good... I might look at a few for inspiration...

I think I'd lost my main map's aesthetics philosophy when I started to hone my skills in the art of the submaps; creating landscapes in such a limited space is both a blessing and a curse, so to speak. While the space really bothers me, the challenge is a good thing at the end.

By all means, go ahead. I'm flattered, you know... I'm glad you found some of them to be interesting, after all.

Dream team (feed them, please):

I wanted to thank you for posting all this. I feel like there's a tendency for new users on the site (and older users on the site) to look at all the talent surrounding them and think, "man, I'll never be that good." We can tell them that it's all about practice and experimentation (and we do, because it's the truth!) but threads like this grant them an opportunity to see it. Thanks for sharing your journey, and keep up the great work!

(Also, as somebody who isn't able to set up one (1) overworld event without melting, I have great respect for overworld designers in general - kudos!)
