Stellar Sonata (WYE kinda makes music)

I never really got the hang of SMW music making, but I did churn out a few custom compositions back in 2008-10. They're not at all fancy, but they haven't been rejected from the music section yet, so there's that.

One song I made around 2010 is Stellar Sonata. However, all the echo on it was removed somewhere along the line, leaving the version currently in the Music section sounding like this. This is because - I think - back in the day excessive echo would break the then-current Addmusic. That issue must be behind us by now (I hope), but the echo was never restored.

So yesterday I grabbed a copy of AddmusicK and tried to restore the echo myself, tweaking some of the ADSR while I was at it. (read: I flailed around with Hex commands without any idea what I was doing until it sounded not terrible.)

Here's the new version of Stellar Sonata, which I hope breaks none of the current submission rules. #ab{^^;;;} (I've had literally zero to do with SMW music the past few years.)

I'd appreciate any feedback, not least from the music pros!

Oh boy, I first heard this in "Mario Gives Up" a while ago, It's nice to see that you re-did the port

I first heard this in "Mario gives up", too and you definitely made an improvement with this new version. If this gets accepted or rejected lies in the hands of the music mods. Sadly i just started porting, too and therefore aren't able to give any deeper feedback than that i like the new crystally, fancy version! #w{=3}

Man this brings back some memories...

Sounds really present overall, and the re-added echo just really completes the whole thing. You've got nice ideas, it would be nice to hear more from you if ever decided to give porting another go sometime.
I remember that song very dearly. I used it in the pre-castle level of world 5 in Vanilla Twist!, however I don't think I ever got around to releasing a demo that included that world.
Being used to the old version I think it's a little weird how some of the notes now sustain for a little longer, but the echo is pretty sweet to have.
Sound the alarm, a music mod has spotted you!
Seriously though this is actually a simple but really nice composition! I'm not at all familiar with its history or the limitations of old addmusic (only started using it in late 2015), so I don't know how it all started, but I like this new version.
I didn't look at your txt but judging by the sound of the echo, it doesn't sound dangerous. I won't have much time to dedicate to it until after C3, but if you like, I can check out your txt in more detail and test it out and make sure nothing bad sticks out.

You also mentioned having trouble getting the hang of AMK and changing things randomly until it sounds good. I remember what that was like! IF you want to understand it better, there are a number of threads in the forums with useful tutorials and tidbits, as well as the music channel on Discord. But I am okay with helping you directly if you want.

Good luck with your porting endeavors!

Make more of less, that way you won't make less of more!
Glad you like it! #tb{:)}

Thanks for the offer and the encouragement! I'm not sure how deep I want to dive into music porting. I do have some compositions that I'm hoping can be turned into songs for my hack, but I should really leave that to people who are already experienced porters. I'll probably make an effort to hire musicians in the near future.

What is the difference between the old and new one?

I could only realized the new echo effect.

There's not much of a difference between the old echo-y version and the new one. Aside from restoring the echo, all I did was tweak some instruments (like the steel drums) to play their sounds a little longer.

This song sounds vaguely familiar. I can't quite put my finger on it.

I checked out this and the old version and it sounds infinitely better with the echo. Potentially controversial opinion though, I think this would sound better if the main melody used a different instrument. Can't get over a somber sounding piece being played on steel drums, it feels wrong.
