This particular C3 won't focus on the environments of my hack that I've showcased in the past (you can visit the thread if you'd like to catch up on those). Instead, I'll focus on a new system of cutscene mugshots that I've put in place that ended up being way too fun to mess around with.

Little 'ol Eszett has been exclusively seen in these little character sprites - just look at her go interminably to the right! What a peach.
Should you decide to talk with someone, you'll probably need a little more detail than that. So:

BAM
Decked out in her courier's uniform and everything. However it would be quite dull to just see this over and over, so I've devised a rather flexible tileset that allows for some shenanigans without using more than one graphical slot per person. I've managed to include all of the most basic emotions that a human can ask for:
< Pondering!

< A need to correct people!

< Struggling to comprehend what even is the thing!

< Shock!

< undef_emotion_six

< Rolling up your sleeves to smack sense into some fool!

< Explaining teary-eyed what went wrong!

< Presenting evidence!

< Hug!

I'll be working on other people as well, so hopefully I'll have some of their mugshots ready by the end of C3.

ß's very well drawn, i think my favorite mugshot is the first. i feel like a tiny bit more detail could be put into her sole-blue with black-tit-outlined torso.
Some of ß's facial expressions could become interesting emotes. I have absolutely no talent for pixel art and i admire those, who can pixel cool characters like you do. Overall they look really great. #smw{:TUP:}

Looking great! Aside from the facial expressions, I love how the shading on her cap looks. As far as "readability" goes, my favorite expressions have to be Shock and Pondering.

In some of those poses, her hands looks pretty small. Maybe making them a tad bigger would make the pose more expressive still?

This automatically elevates Eszett to among the most expressive and interesting characters featured in any of the hacks here, and it's hard to not appreciate how much she is willing to put herself through just to get the job done.

Those all look great, the expressions are great. It's neat there's room in your game to give your character such personality.
I ended up having a look at the WIP thread and you probably have one of the most elaborate projects in the site, I wish you look and hope your motivation stays strong cause it has much much potential.
I like this character's design a lot. Looks like a happy traveler! The sprites for the poses are cool too. Though, the arms on the hug pose look a little weird to me since they aren't perfectly lining up with the way her body is facing.

Pretty nice mugshots you have there. If I had to give some feedback, I'd say the arms in the hug pose look somewhat off, especially the left arm. Other than that, all of them are pretty good.
Also, I know it isn't part of this thread, but damn your overworld is fantastic.
Damn, this is some stuff. Will you actually be using these in-game? They seem big enough to be clunky, but not impossibly so. It'd look amazing if you could pull it off. And your WIP thread is nothing to sneeze at either! You have what is most likely the prettiest overworld I've ever seen. Everything you're showing off just looks so unbelievably good.

I don't want anything too extraneous, but I'll see if I can't add any details to the tittyzone, like folds or something.

Possibly, and drawing 8x8 hands is an ordeal anyway. My goal with these character portraits is being able to use one character per graphic slot, so using more tiles than necessary might hinder that.
That said, it might be worthwhile to make Eszett's hands the 'generic' hands that every character uses unless if they have some special hand-trait about them so that their tilesets can save a few tiles.

Appropriately enough, Eszett constantly refers to herself as a 'consummate professional,' even though she doesn't quite understand what those words mean.

You people and your endless hug critiques.
It makes sense though, since left arm is just the right arm flipped with no regards to perspective or anatomy.

The basic structures of cutscenes will work something like this. Of course, this is a bare-bones rendition, and the final will have all the thrills and frills of VWF Dialogue, basic backgrounds, and exanimation for moving mouths and blinking eyes.

Where can I find him in the game?
Generally, I'm liking the ideas here for this cutscene system. And even though what's shown in the GIF is really bare-bones, this is a really good start for cutscenes; with the vertical scrolling, more scenes can be put into a single level slot- saving other slots for levels and other cutscenes.

You're really good at pixel art. Eszett is so cute!

Disregard my previous signature. Apparently it is called Stickerbrush in the GBA version.

I'm inclined to agree in regards to tinyhands. It might be at odds with your system, but some further tinkering might do ol' Eszett some good. And it goes without saying, but the broad strokes of what you have here are looking good, as they always do. Keep fighting the good fight!

I wanted to add - and hopefully this isn't too much an aside - but the beauty (and occasionally anguish) of hacking is that there's infinite possibility for experimentation. Don't give up on your ideas as they appear in your mind's eye - just because you don't know how to realize them in-game now doesn't mean it flat out can't be done. In fact, it almost never means that.

Something about her mouth in every pose looks off. I think it's the abundant use of black. Perhaps one of the dark brown colors would suffice?

The best thing is that it`s far away from Mario world, you could Design a whole new Game.
