I made a hack ages ago called Learning Swedish that was not the best but at least it had something unique going for it.
Many great SMW hacks exist but many more are just meh.
Either they just add kaizo levels to annoying most people or add cool custom things but with generic level designs that are ok at best

Kaizo hacks exist to test someone's skill and a lot of twitch streamers play those.

Hacks are long because it's interesting to play and you can make lot of unique stuff in the game.

If you want to play a good game, try to search hacks by highest rating.
any link for the "Learning Swedish" hack?
cant find it
It is not on smw central
It was on years ago but was removed because it had many problems
You can still find people on youtube playing it

My latest version made almost 3 years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KczKkp2IkhY&t=69s (part1/11) but this version like I said is full of problems like long corridors of nothingness, floating munchers and what not but even so it gives you an insight and once improved (hopefully soon) I will tell him to play the new version then try and put it on smw central again

Kaizo hacks annoy most people? How?
They exist to push the player to their limits and test their skills. Sure, some of them have been all the same, but others are pretty unique and different from what we usually see. I could list many examples here off the top of my head.

You and I think alike - I'm all for innovation nowadays (and if possible, coupled with janky level design ala JUMP) rather than just generic level design. You could look for hacks like these in the section or something.

I'm hoping to see the Swedish hack released at some point by the way.
I too do think most hacks are meh. But probably for different reasons.
People have different tastes and look for different things when evaluating a hack.
Im yet to see a hack that is universally accepted as a really good one. The closest to it i can think of is Mice.. and yet, ive seen people very annoyed by it.

Besides, every creator probably think their hacks have something unique to offer.

It's not always true that the highest-rated hack is the best. I've never played it, but from what I've seen, Mario is Screwed is extremely creative and the rating is surely relatively low. My hack is also lowly rated for what it offers. There are a lot more hacks like this one, also not kaizo, but I can't recall any other example.
I have a Discord server as well!

YO I REMEMBER THAT HACK. It was kind of oddball but I appreciated it for thinking outside the box. I also remember some dude got banned for insulting you in the moderation thread.

I can't speak for the kaizo levels part but I pretty much agree with this completely.
Just an example that to me, is relevant to the thread.

Recently i've come across a hack that had a neat idea going for it and somewhat cool graphics... Yet almost every level played out the same. It was boring and repetitve despite the clear effort put into it.

Somehow though, I seemed one of the only people who disliked it. More than enough others seemed to enjoy themselves and one person even blamed me for not seeing the 'genious' of it.

That stroke me as odd and soon enouugh, I figured most hacks I played with 'perfect' graphics ended up feeling this way. Seems the aesthetic > engaging level design discussion still isn't over.

There's a reason I like pure vanilla first and foremost.
When you work with vanilla, you are pretty much limited with the resources you have in the rom.

But when custom graphics exist, you could do anything you imagine and also make fancy ASM with blocks, sprites and patches out there.

A lot of cool gimmick can be made.

People out there inspire there ideas from popular hacks out there
and from other 2D Mario games which is one reason lot of hacks feel like the similar.

haha happy someone remembers it on here besides the few people who played old versions on Youtube but like you mention thinking outside the box is what I ment with many hacks
They have cool custom things going for it but level design is average at best
Had no idea someone got banned for insulting me and thats even though I read https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewthread&t=74800 many times lol

Take me, I am working on a new much better version of learning Swedish using 100% vanilla because instead of taking weeks to learn how to add custom stuff and change the overworld I prefer to be more creative with what I got
Sure my hack will never be a 5/5 hack by any means but hopefully it will stick out more then enough so people can remember it for years to come and have a little fun when learning Swedish or any language for that matter if people want to tweek the levels a bit for x language

You know what, I am actually looking forward to that hack of yours. I would like a mix of good old SMW styled levels with some language learning inbetween.
Shiz, I didn't know you could comment on a hack before it gets accepted or rejected and give your verdict.

I'd like to see the new version of the hack anyways.

Haha well its nice when people look forward to my hack so I got a bigger reason to finish it sooner but as its stands I am having fun working on it and hopefully people will enjoy it with tons of Youtube commentary videos to make me laugh for weeks to come

Go ahead, do better. Show us how hacking should be done.
And reading the hack-rejection thread of your so-called good hack is hilarious. Tell yourself that all those meh hacks were accepted, while yours was rejected. Stacked munchers, cutoffs, emptiness, enemy spam, huge difficulty spikes, blatant edits of vanilla levels: yeah, sounds like a good hack!

Just saw the hack on youtube and, while I agree that has a lot of problems, at least it was something different and the idea was nice, so I see the point akumie is making with his post. The execution was completely below SMWC standards, but there was no need to be that rude.

Why be so bitter? Being this rude is not a way to get your point across.
And no, this "go ahead, do better" argument is so flawed in many ways. There's no way to simply "do better". You make your hack as your efforts see fit, as much as they might not pay off in the end. Not to mention the OP has already recognized himself that his hack is way below our standards.

Sorry, I made it unclear. I meant that I didn't know there were threads for hacks being in moderation and everyone could post in those.

Oh I am bitter? I am the one trying to get a point by being rude?
Lol I'm not the one coming here 5 years after my hack was rejected to say all the hacks on the website are bad while mine was good. Your comment should be destined to the original user, not me.
