  • Improve my level design habits;

How do you know if there will really be the next VLDC next year?

Anyways, I want to create a level with more unique obstacles than this year. I want it to be an urban/factory level with 8-bit music and each tile with 4 colors (including transparency) available on NES. I know someone who wanted to capture Tower of Heaven aesthetics, but I'd like to make my level look like a classical game created in 80's/90's as well as introduce unusual level design choices like in JUMP or any other hack like that.

EDIT: I want to do some fan-judging as well. I won't look at the levels created by others before I first play them, even when I feel tempted enough to click on a video of a pretty level.

People are so shallow.
Most important thing is to use gimmicks in more unique and inspirational ways. Second most important thing is to bring more of my philosophies across instead of being forced to use a limited set of sprites.
If I had the power to see a year into the future, I may have been able to answer such a question. But alas!

I'd like to practice the gauntlet/jump/whatever the fuck you wanna call it/etc style a bit more. It's completely against how I normally design and I feel like I'd appreciate it a bit more if I could actually make levels that way.

I really hope people don't think Jump 1/2 is gonna be just a bunch of gauntlet levels :(

That's where the original JUMP shined. Also, the JUMP Half trailer really put a big emphasis on those style of levels. Can you really blame the expectations you guys have created for yourselves? #tb{:p}

Blame their influential janky level design philosophy instead. Don't underestimate their power.

fwiw I just said jump style cause I know that's what other people call it. I'm not really a fan of the term, just like I'm not a fan of using kaizo for kaizo, but that one stuck and we can't really change it now.
