Overworld Design Contest 2019 - Discussion and Questions

Link Thread Closed

OWDC

Two little questions on the rules.

1. Can I just throw goal spheres and/or keys as needed into TEST levels and call it a day, or do I need to at least make the Levels aesthetically fitting?

2. What about in-level ASM that affects the Overworld? Is changing the players' OW position or activating events during Levels allowed?

The map is the only thing that will be judged so uh go wild I guess

Sure but nah don't waste your time. As has been said levels won't be judged so just place a level, and make sure it has a hex number and can be accessed. At least that's my understanding of the rules.

Sorry for the late responses! Worked late last night and only now had a chance to reply.

Wouldn't be a problem at all, especially if you make that effort to not spoil any of the judges (like putting showoff pics in spoilers or something of that nature). Our backup judges are only there in case any of the current judges drop out, so don't worry too much about spoiling any of them. And even if you do end up accidentally spoiling a judge, there won't be a penalty whatsoever.

Also, while I was trying to figure out if there were any judges in that server, I noticed the judge list has the name "Kit" in a fancy blue font like a staff member might have. We have a user named "Kit" but they have an ordinary pink name. Is the fancy blue Kit the same as the ordinary pink Kit, or is the judge some other person?

It's that ordinary Kit, I just made a mistake while choosing a color for their name on that post. I'll update it shortly.

1. Yes, that's fine. As Katerpie said, only the overworld is going to be judged in this contest.

2. I don't see why not. Perhaps make a note of it along with your submission (or in a message box), but that shouldn't be an issue.
And how can you think of the name of this level, or can you use VLDC11?

Not sure I understand your question entirely to be honest, but I would certainly prefer level names to not come from another source (like VLDC11) if they're something to be judged.
I'd like to participate
(as I have a secret hack that's been ongoing for nearly 2 years and I'm just about done, but have lost some motivation recently)
so I'd like to show off the overworld. I decided to 'port' my overworld to a fresh ROM so as not to spoil the levels with success, but it seems a few of my overworld patches break Erik's event debugger.

I am using:
OWSpeed.asm
WidescreenOW.asm
ExExOverworldLevelNames.asm

As well as some HDMA via UberASM (disabling the UberASM doesn't seem to change anything, however, the menu does freak out even more when I have HDMA on the main map or a submap).

The issue I'm having is when the menu comes up to select exit type, the screen goes all wonky with black lines everywhere. I can select the exit type just fine, the lines will disappear and the event triggers, but it is quite a jarring display. Any idea if those patches are incompatible with the Debugger? I'm not using SA-1 if that makes a difference.

Also I noticed that my Switch Palaces don't seem to depress when I choose the Normal Exit. I'd like my switches to activate with the debugger if possible!

I'd like my overworld displayed in game, and not via Lunar Magic for this contest, so using the debugger would be ideal.

Thanks!
I've tried my best to update the patch to fix any issues similar to yours with the window spazzing. I updated the link in the rules thread, but you can find it here.
Still, I'd recommend you to enable the FastROM patch in Lunar Magic as to have the code run faster.

Addressed by Erik above. If there's any more help needed about issues like this, do continue posting them in here.

General Update:
Unfortunately, user Kit has decided to drop as one of the judges for this contest, leaving 4 of us remaining. While there are still backups just in case, the current decision is to just stick with those 4 judges for the remainder of the contest. The Rules thread will be updated to reflect this change.
i didnt bother reading the thread heres my question: will an entry get disqualified or something if the rom cannot be opened with lunar magic (either due to major modifications to the overworld or the rom structure as a whole)?

First off, how d a r e you.

Second off, that shouldn't be an issue as long as activating events (if you're even using them) isn't a hassle to judges.
So, in theory, could I use a level as my OW if I can make said level work similar to the vanilla SMW OW and then disable Lunar Magic-access to the ROM so that nobody can prove what I did, so I can use the far bigger dimensions levels offer?

Inversely, what about completely rewriting the OW to the point where it has nothing to do with the vanilla OW anymore?

If only I had any idea how to code any of this...

Thanks! I've PMed you about another issue that required showing part of my overworld, so I have not shared it here. Your 1.1 update has fixed the issues I was having.
I'm thinking of participating, just a few questions about it.

1. Can I still use the overworld for my own hack?

2. Can I use unused overworld features, custom graphics and custom music?

3. Can I, in addition to the overworld, submit an txt to explain certain things about how the overworld would function in-game?

4. What are the trophies used for?

5. Where is the list of game download codes?

Thanks

I couldn't answer any of the other questions, but the trophies are just displays on your profile so that you may look at and revel in the glory of your accomplishment. It has no real worth beyond that.

Edit: I stand corrected.

trophies are a vital aspect of account trading, effectively representing the value of your account (along with account age and groups listed in)

no i do not participate in account trading anymore

If you're that proud of it and can somehow make it work for levels (and events for that matter) it wasn't designed around, I don't see why not. Personally I would rather make a whole new one at that point myself, but not all of us think the same with that.

Go for it. As the rules state: "You may use any resources you want."

Sure. If it's meant to be shown in Lunar Magic rather than played then I suppose that's reasonable. Just be sure to keep your name out of that text, as judging for this contest is meant to be anonymous.

As far as I'm aware, that list is only available for staff members to see.
