I got this game on launch day and I love it to pieces. I plowed through story mode, played a bunch of levels, and got to around 88 on Expert before I started dipping into level design. My levels are semi-hard. I struggle with thinking up challenge design so my levels tend to mostly have an emphasis on just being cool environments to see and explore.
All of my levels for the original Super Mario Maker
were made on the 3DS version and had a weird emphasis on Munchers, something that started off as a joke but became a staple of everything that I and my friend (who also had a copy) have made. A playlist of my levels can be seen here
. Because this version had no online level sharing, these levels generally had less effort put into them and were made specifically for our tastes. Some of them are hardly even finished, with sudden, jokey endings that come out of nowhere. I'm not too proud of them but I did have a lot of fun burning time waiting for the internet to come back on. I might remake some of these in 2
. The jungle ("munchgle") and haunted house ("eggmunchsion") are easily my favorites of the set and were undoubtedly the most inspired. The latter, despite its size, was actually very well-realized and has tons of room for improvement.
Here's a list of all my levels so far, with brief descriptions of each:
Muncher Meadow (99C-M23-LMF):
My first level made for this game. It's a bit scatterbrained in design and unfortunately lacks a checkpoint. It should be playable for someone with patience and skill though. I'm not too fond of this one.
Winter Muncherland (FR9-KY4-KMG):
A level I collaborated with a sibling on. It's a bit different than my usual levels because of his influence. It's a bit harder and denser than something I would usually make.
Tower to Muncher Heaven (J2B-MYN-WDG):
A peaceful, mostly-easy vertical climb. I enjoyed building the aesthetic for this one and I was really surprised when it skyrocketed into the top of the "hot levels" section.
Muncher Heaven (4XX-8WV-QLF):
Unrelated to the previous level, this one is a more traditional run-and-jump level with plenty of bottomless pits. It has a bit of a nasty spike at the end but I still like it. It's pretty short and nicely paced.
Muncher Mountain (KB4-L1C-XDG):
Inspired directly by Celeste and it even borrows some design and theme elements from it. It's pretty lengthy and it gets quite a bit harder after the second checkpoint.
Muncher Jungle (HP2-807-8LG):
A Level based on one of my creations for the 3DS game. Beyond the intro it's pretty radically different. I tried to focus on teaming up all sorts of enemies with Munchers to create a hazardous level that's still straight-forward.
Mad Muncher Mansion (DM4-MFK-S7G):
Another remake of a 3DS creation. The level was pretty 1:1 with the original in terms of progression and format until I decided to overhaul the beginning. It's a level where you enter and escape a haunted mansion full of ghosts and—of course—Munchers. I tried focusing on a sort of progression with locked doors that I haven't tried before.
