For a less intensive version of the results (plaintext/no embeds), see here.
Note that the YouTube embeds may take some time to all load - they aren't broken, just slow!
It’s finally time for the moment many of you have been waiting for! Whether it’s to jump in and discover a brand new OST tied to a song that you liked, or ragefully scream once you realize what that song at the tip of your tongue was, we’ve got your results here! Take a look!
The Songs: Show/Hide
1. Rhythm Heaven Megamix - Songbird Remix (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
This was actually the first song I picked. Originally, it was going to be Cheer Readers 2 from Rhythm Heaven Fever, but after a while, Songbird Remix got stuck in my head, and it's just such a funky song that I had to pick it. It felt like a good song to start off with too. Plus, who doesn't like birds?
2. Super Mario Odyssey - Steam Gardens (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 15 people.
VIDEO
I figured I’d kick off my selections with an easy one. This is by far my favorite song from Odyssey, and an early-game one too, so it should be familiar even if you’ve only played a little bit of the game. I suppose it being a newer game is the reason only about half the guessers got this one.
3. Wagyan Paradise - Water Duct (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
I assumed at least somebody would know this soundtrack, but I guess not - it’s one of my absolute favorites on the SNES, done mostly by Eriko Imura, who also later went on to work on the Klonoa series. I strongly recommend giving the rest of the soundtrack a listen, as it’s very unique among the SNES library.
4. Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late - Cross Thought (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 4 people.
VIDEO
I don’t know anything about this game other than it’s by the same people who did Melty Blood, including the composer, so it’s bound to have just as great music, and it certainly does deliver on that front.
5. Pokémon Rumble Blast - Battle! Lake (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
I don’t know how popular this game was when it came out, but I know I spent a lot of time with the original Pokémon Rumble and was thrilled when the sequel came out. The games are insanely addicting with great music, though I went for a less well-known song here. I wonder if more people would have recognized one of the town themes. If you haven’t played this game or heard its soundtrack it’s absolutely worth a play/listen.
6. Persona 5 - Life Goes On (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 7 people.
VIDEO
I couldn’t not include something from this massively popular game, so I went with the one in eggdog exams because it’s the one I’ve heard the most. I won’t deny having watched this video way more than is healthy.
7. Nintendogs - Shopping Theme (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 3 people.
VIDEO
Thinking back to my days yelling at my DS Lite in an airport trying to get my dogs to lie down, I wanted to pick a song from Nintendogs that exudes, well... the Nintendogs feeling. I figured the shopping theme is one that you’re bound to have heard at some point, without being as blatantly obvious as the Bathtime Theme or the Main Theme. Plus, it's just really cutesy and catchy.
8. Donkey Kong Country (GBA) - Funky Fishing (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by PUN! Series guessed by 1.
VIDEO
The DKC series GBA remakes are all better than the originals. Fight me. I almost went with something from the DKC3 remake, since the entire soundtrack is changed (for the better), but instead I decided to go for one of the added mini-game songs from the first one. Okay, the mini-games across the three games are kind of bad sometimes. But the rest of the changes are improvements. You can still fight me.
9. Mercury Meltdown Revolution - Brain (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by BTD6_maker!
VIDEO
For some reason I always thought this was a standard game that shipped with the Wii. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s just because it was one of the first ones I owned and I played it so much. It’s a fantastic puzzle game with a just as fantastic soundtrack - in some ways it’s kind of like if Super Monkey Ball were made into a puzzle game.
10. Pokémon Black/White - Someone's Entralink (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 3 people, series guessed by 2.
VIDEO
And thus starts the trend of songs that I picked to be incredibly familiar but not. While most of the Pokémon Black/White soundtrack should be recognizable, this song in particular only plays in the Entralink when you're playing with someone else, and let's be real, how many people actually did that? As much as I don't usually care for percussion, I can't get enough of this song. Maybe I'll port it some day. Though it's obscure, the samples might've given you a clue if you're already familiar with Pokémon music. However, there's a slight trick in that this is one of the few songs not to be carried over to Pokémon Black 2/White 2.
11. Fortune Street - Casino Slot (Mario) (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 8 people, series guessed by 9.
VIDEO
I was digging through the Fortune Street OST since the game is slightly obscure, even though the music isn't. This song was perfect since it's a remix of the SMW bonus theme just like Above the Clouds in Super Mario Odyssey. In fact, many people fell into that trap, so my mission was successful. But hey, the SMW bonus theme still slaps after all these years, so hopefully listening to it was enjoyable even if you guessed it wrong.
12. Spyro the Dragon - Wizard Peak (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody, series guessed by 1.
VIDEO
While I've never played Spyro, a few years ago, I was at my friend's house as she was playing this level, and I commented on how this song sounds exactly like The Amanda Show's theme song. In that vein, picking the song here was sort of a fake out, but that wasn't the intention. Anyways, my friend and I did our research, and it turns out that the same composer recycled the song for both the show and the game, which was kind of a neat realization. This song reminds me of when I'd watch the show, so it's always pleasant to listen to.
13. 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors - Quaternary Game (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 2 people.
VIDEO
Another one I haven’t played, but have loved the music of for a long time thanks to music legend Shinji Hosoe. I’ve heard fantastic things about the game, but never bothered to try it because I suuuuuuuck at escape games.
14. Super Monkey Ball: Step and Roll - Monkey Island (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
Oof. I guess this game is less well-known than I thought it was, considering this is the level 1 song. It’s basically a worse version of Banana Blitz, with support for the Wii Balance Board (ew!) and with way more bland level design. The music is still fantastic, though!
15. Len'en Mugenri ~ Evanescent Existence - In this World ~ Monochrome Eye (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 2 people.
VIDEO
"Tsubakura"'s theme from the first released Len'en game. A lot of people guessed this as Touhou, which is pretty damn close considering everything about this game is heavily inspired by Touhou, including the music. In fact, JynX, the creator, uses the same synth as ZUN, the Edirol SD-90. That piano in the beginning is absolute chaos that still manages to sound great, which is why I picked this song. It's probably one of my favourite songs from the game.
16. Danganrompa - BOX 15 (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 5 people.
VIDEO
Considering the huge surge in popularity of this series lately, I expected more people to get this one. It’s another one I haven’t played, but have been meaning to get around to it for quite a while.
17. SaGa: Scarlet Grace - Urpina's Theme (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by K.T.B.!
VIDEO
I had to include a lesser known Kenji Ito song on the list somewhere. I just had to. I’m being held at gunpoint by my own ghost. Help.
18. Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Gracie Grace (Picked by bebn)
(also accepted Animal Crossing: City Folk)
Guessed by 2 people, series guessed by 2.
VIDEO
I knew I had to include Animal Crossing in here somewhere, and this song was originally going to be Bubblegum K.K. However, after realizing that lot of the songs I picked have some sort of connection to Smash, I thought I'd change it up to a song that may not immediately come off as Animal Crossing. When the song’s going to end prematurely, a lot of percussion-only parts really keep you suspenseful. I didn't realize the New Leaf version was a remix of the City Folk one, however. If it ain't broke, don't fix it though, right?
19. Simple DS Series Vol. 1 - The Mahjong - BGM #05 (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
Admittedly, I only know about this game because of SiIvaGunner. I remembered it while trying to think of obscure games to round out the difficulty level. I looked through the OST bit by bit, trying to find the song that slaps the most. And for a Mahjong game of all things, most of these songs really do slap. BGM #05 was my favourite, however.
20. Shaberu! DS Oryōri Navi - Title Theme (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
This song is actually remixed in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate! The "さあ…大乱闘いたしましょう。" in the remix gave me chills when I was like 9 years old, and it still does today. In fact, I was so excited in the lead up to Ultimate's release that this song played on repeat in my mind every day. Originally, I wanted to pick the Smash remix, but I figured it'd be too obvious. I went for the original theme instead in the hopes that it'd be just familiar enough that you know you've heard it before, but that you also go crazy since you can't pinpoint where it's from.
21. Seiken Densetsu 3 - Powell (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 14 people.
VIDEO
Most people probably know this one from the ridiculous number of ports of it used in SMW hacks. I refuse to call this game Trials of Mana, by the way, even though that still counted as a correct guess. It just feels wrong.
22. Sutte Hakkun - Stage 6 (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 5 people.
VIDEO
Another song from a game I've never played. Originally, I had a different song in mind (which I can't remember right now) that I believed was Happiness Tower from Sutte Hakkun. However, upon going through the entire OST, I realized I was mistaken, but that didn't stop me from picking another song, since the OST is happy and cute, just like Hakkun. The instruments being similar to SMW's had me hoping it would somewhat familiar to people.
23. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness - Standing on End (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by SomeGuy712x!
VIDEO
I couldn’t leave out my good boy Motoi Sakuraba, but I wanted to pick a newer song of his since I’ve heard his older songs so many times, and this one is top notch. Overall I'd say this is one of his best soundtracks in some time.
24. Centipede: Infestation - Boss Thoughtful (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
Continuing the theme of lesser known songs by well known composers, here’s one by Jake Kaufman. I don’t really have anything else to say about it.
25. Kirby's Return to Dreamland - Looming Darkness (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 8 people, series guessed by 4.
VIDEO
Again, a lot of my starting points were Smash, and so this was originally going to be Dangerous Dinner since I love that song. However, I branched off and picked one of my other favourites from this game. As much as I hated these areas in the game, their music was always great along with the black and white aesthetic, and so it was the only thing motivating me to revisit them and actually get the sphere things. This song also doesn't sound like obvious Kirby, which influenced my decision a bit. Come to think of it, I still haven't beaten Kirby's Return to Dreamland.
26. Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram - Bloody Sorrow (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
It’s a shame this series’ music isn’t more popular. It’s some of the absolute best around. Kentaro Koyama is a genius composer and I so very much wish he had more music out there than he does.
27. Mario Kart Wii - Galaxy Arena/Galaxy Colosseum (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 4 people, series guessed by 1.
VIDEO
This song has unfortunately been lost with time now that Mario Kart Wii tournaments are no longer a thing, and it's such a shame because it's so unique compared to other Mario Kart songs. The first time I ever heard this song was in one of the CTGP Revolution tracks almost 5 or 6 years ago, and I fell in love with how weird and funky it sounded. I didn't realize it was a song from the original game. I forgot about it for a bit, but lately, I often listen to this song at night while sitting at my computer before bed.
28. No More Heroes - Stop Hanging DJs (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 3 people.
VIDEO
This game’s music is incredibly varied, but I picked a song that sticks out a bit more because I love this soundtrack and wanted people to guess it. I’m not always a jerk. Usually. But not always.
29. Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force - A Wonderful Day In Club Penguin (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 2 people.
VIDEO
I don't really know how I came to pick this song, it just kind of appeared in my head that this game was a thing. I remember being super enthusiastic about this game, and I still have a memory of me playing it in a car one time. Suddenly hearing this song now gave me flashbacks. I don't really have much else to say. I still have the game though.
30. GameBoy Camera - Run! Run! Run! (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
Browsing through the site's music section while remoderating made me remember that the GameBoy Camera was a thing, and I thought it'd be a nice bit of variety to throw in there. I vaguely knew about Run! Run! Run! being somewhat of a meme, but I guess a big reason I picked is that it's one of the like 3 songs in the game that isn't a 5-second jingle. Plus it sounds thrilling enough as if it's from some dramatic game, and not a camera toy of all things.
31. Wario Land 4 - Crescent Moon Village (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 12 people, series guessed by 3.
VIDEO
A few months ago, somebody needed help fixing up an old port that Dominator made of this song, which introduced me to the wonders that are in Wario Land 4's OST. While I played a bit of it on my 3DS years ago, all I remembered was the Hurry Up theme, which I don't particularly love. The samples are characteristically GBA Wario, so it was intended to be an easy one. Too bad the 30-second limit didn't let us include the climax of the song though, it's really a banger.
32. Super Mario Maker - Ghost House (Super Mario Bros.) - Create (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 10 people, series guessed by 5.
VIDEO
Not sure if it was the Mario Maker 2 hype, but the SMB1 ghost house theme is a song that I've always liked. Picking the Play version felt too easy though, so I chose the Create version as a twist, though it still wasn't supposed to be very hard. It's one of the few Create songs that's slightly harder to recognize, though maybe it's also because I conveniently cut it off right before the more recognizable part comes on.
33. La-Mulana - Mr. Explorer (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 8 people.
VIDEO
I'm not sure where I heard this before, maybe it was a SMW port, but I fell in love with this song the moment I heard it. It's funny because I know nothing about La-Mulana, not even what kind of game it is. I did a quick YouTube search and found this SMW port of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igAF0g379x8. I'm surprised I fell in love with that version of the song since it sounds inaccurate and weirdly-instrumented. But hey, here we are.
34. Super Mario World (Pirate) - Credits (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 5 people, series guessed by 2.
VIDEO
Considering this is Super Mario World Central, it felt fitting to include a song from discount Super Mario World. The credits theme is the only one that's not an obvious "remix" of a SMW song, which is why I picked it. Still, the tuning of the NES instruments here sounds like bootlegy. I'm actually not sure how known (or not) this game is.
35. Pocky & Rocky - The Haunted Shrine (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 5 people.
VIDEO
Another game I've never played. Probably more than a decade ago, I loved reading random trivia about Mario online, including localization information for SMB3. When it came to the Tanooki suit, there was mention of Pocky & Rocky being another game with a tanuki in it, which is pretty much the extent of my knowledge of the game lol. That being said, going through this game's OST, there are some pretty great songs in there, though many of them are really short.
36. Daytona USA 2 - Skyscraper Sequence (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
I had to include some Takenobu Mitsuyoshi singing in here somewhere, but the original Daytona USA or Burning Rangers would have been too obvious. Maybe those would have been better choices, though, since nobody got it. It’s absolutely a soundtrack worth checking out, but make sure you find the Mitsuyoshi versions. As good as Dennis St. James is, you can’t top those classic Mitsuyoshi vocals.
37. Super Nazo Puyo - Arle vs Rulue (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 12 people.
VIDEO
A very popular SMW port of this by gocha exists, which is why I picked this one - I knew people would know the song, but I wasn’t sure if they would know the name. Apparently they did.
38. *IMPOSTOR* stinkbug - Tuesday Night Shenanigans (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
I chose this as the impostor due to its reasonable popularity and the Pokémon-style sound design. I’m a bit surprised nobody knew it, but that’s just more reason to listen to the full thing, as it’s just wonderful in every aspect.
39. Deltarune - THE WORLD REVOLVING (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 21 people.
VIDEO
Gotta have a few gimme’s, right? I refuse to play this game but the music is decent. It surprised me that this wasn’t the most correctly guessed song of the lot.
40. WarioWare: Snapped! - Line Up! (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by Blue Leaf!
VIDEO
This song isn't memorable, and neither is the game. It also doesn't particularly sound like WarioWare music, but more like generic waiting room music. I think I only know about this game because of random surfing on the Super Mario Wiki when I was younger. I've seen a gameplay video of it on YouTube too. I don't have much else to say, really.
41. Paper Mario: Color Splash - #1 Thing Squeezer (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by snoruntpyro!
VIDEO
This was originally going to be And Then... And Then... from Super Paper Mario, but in the time leading up to the start of the contest, I borrowed Color Splash from my friend since it was the only Paper Mario I hadn't played, and I played it over a few weeks. I decided to go through the OST since there's some decent tracks in the game, even if the game itself leaves a lot to be desired. I was going to pick Paper Pipeline first, but then I realized that I don't even remember where it plays. #1 Thing Squeezer was a neat little trick song because you hear over and over in-game, but because of its subtlety, you probably don't remember hearing it at all. Plus, percussion always sounds familiar.
42. Devil Engine - COSMO BABYLON (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
This one was really mean and I feel so bad for the two people that guessed Hyper Duel. This game is a tribute to Technosoft shmups, with a soundtrack heavily inspired by Hyakutaro Tsukumo’s work (and even featuring a couple songs by him!). It also happens to include a remix of Cosmo Babylon from Hyper Duel, even though the games are completely unrelated aside from inspiration. It’s an incredible remix, but I am so so sorry for picking such a mean song.
43. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles - Lava Reef Zone Act 1 (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 22 people, series guessed by 1.
VIDEO
I've probably played less than an hour of Sonic in my life, but I believe I first heard a SMW port of this song while watching a TAS of something, and I fell in love with it. Looking it up, there's a port from 2014, which holds up surprisingly well. I love FM synthesis as much as I like SMW's ugly samples with ADSR-by-2014-standards, so each version has its own charm. Another fun fact, while humming it, I sometimes confuse this song with the Dungeon theme from StarTropics because of how similar they are compositionally.
44. Imperial SaGa - Battle ~ HEROES (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 2 people.
VIDEO
My motivation for picking this one was the fact that it sounds nothing like a SaGa song, and sounds more like something you’d hear in Pop’n Music. So unless you already knew the song there’s pretty much no chance you’d ever guess the series. Great song, though, probably my favorite on the soundtrack.
45. Nintendo 3DS - Internet Settings (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 9 people.
VIDEO
I suppose this is a dirty trick because the Nintendo 3DS might not count as a video game "proper", but hey, it’s still very much related. I have fond memories of failing to connect my 3DS to the internet back when it first came out because our router was incompatible, and so this song set the mood for me. It feels surprisingly tense for settings music, yet it's still such a cute song. Maybe it's because of the little square guy that walks you through it. When he got sad, I would too.
46. Chōsōjū Mecha MG - Marionation Gear (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by Ivy!
VIDEO
I picked this song because of its obscurity, pure and simple. The only reason I know this song is once again because of Smash, and its name would always confuse me when I would play Brawl back in the day, as I wondered what Mario game this was from. I wasn't the only one; try looking up this song without getting any mention of Luigination Gear. Anyways, as for the song itself, the Brawl remix is so much nicer, because of the instrumentation, namely the electric guitar. It’s DS Bitcrushing in its prime. @17 sounds great compared to this. It's sort of funny to listen to in a way; the tension disappears because of the guitar's silliness.
47. Touhou 2: Story of Eastern Wonderland - Sunfall (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 4 people.
VIDEO
This was originally going to be Selection from Touhou 3, but then I remembered that the PC-98 games have lots of unused songs, which would make it so much more interesting than just picking one random Touhou song for the sake of having Touhou, as most VGM contests do. I picked Sunfall in particular because it doesn't overtly sound like something ZUN-style, except for the bassline. Similarly, the instruments don't exude Touhou either.
48. Sakura Blast - Stage 2 (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by Ultima!
Is my narcissism showing yet?
49. Super Hexagon - Courtesy (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 8 people.
VIDEO
Welp, it's another game that I only know thanks to SiIvaGunner. There's a rip of it that mixes it with Bad Apple that sounds pretty good. Admittedly, this isn't my favourite song because of how grating it is, but we've got to have something for everyone. As far as the OST goes, I like Focus a lot, but Courtesy is probably much more unique-sounding. I guess each has its audience.
50. Wii Play Motion - Credits (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by SomeGuy712x!
VIDEO
This song is so unknown but deserves so much more love. An absolute hidden gem by Totaka. This pick almost ended up being from Wii Music, which also has a few masterpieces lost to time, but overall I like this song a tiny bit more so I went with this one. I totally recommend checking out this song , though, and the rest of that soundtrack.
51. Rhythm Paradise - Pluie amère (Karaté kicks) (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 5 people.
VIDEO
This was the first of the songs intended as a fake impostor, due to having lyrics and just sounding like any generic song instead of video game music specifically. It started out as the Japanese version of Remix 8 from Rhythm Heaven Fever, but then I realized that the instrumentation and general feel is way too similar to Remix 9 and that it might blow our cover, so I switched to something with a different atmosphere. And then I picked the French version because people forget that video game songs exist beyond English and Japanese hehe.
52. Minna no Rhythm Tengoku - やがて女はきれいになるだろう (Remix 9) (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by Teyla! Series guessed by 2.
VIDEO
The second of the songs intended as a fake impostor, since it sounds like a rock song more than anything. We intentionally placed them one after the other to sort of confuse people. And then of course, Japanese lyrics to make people think "anime". So much for a rhythm game, because I'm always dancing in front of the TV when playing this stage. By this point, can you tell I like Rhythm Heaven?
53. Kahoot! - Lobby (Halloween) (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 4 people.
VIDEO
I suppose Kahoot! wouldn't be something that pops to mind when you think of a video game, but considering how all the music in an educational game, of all things, slaps so much, I knew I had to pick one. Now, anything under 30 seconds was a no-go, and all the 60-second countdowns were slow and boring, which left me with the lobby music. I picked the Halloween music since it's a nice little twist leaving the song with a familiar melody but unfamiliar instrumentation.
54. Pokémon X and Y - Boutique (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 8 people.
VIDEO
"But bebn, you already picked a Pokémon song!" Yes, but this song doesn't exactly scream Pokémon, which was somewhat the intent. The rest of my reasoning followed the simple "it just absolutely slaps" logic. It's a shame all the clothes in this game were so damn expensive that I never went to the clothing store, since this song just makes me want to dance. Funny thing is, I still have the Discount Coupon that was handed out as an event when the game first came out.
55. Tiny Tower - Song 3 (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
This song marked my 2012; my friends and I competitively played this game, always trying to outdo each other's towers. Every time I opened the game, I'd refresh it until this song came on just because I love it so much. It's nice and jazzy. Whenever I reopen the game nowadays, once in a blue moon when I'm bored out of my mind, the song still makes me dance, phone in hand. I'm surprised nobody got this one, but then again, I guess most people played mobile games with the sound off. So did I, but Tiny Tower was the exception.
56. Ibara - Bonds of Steel (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 3 people.
VIDEO
Apparently I have a tendency to pick a bunch of things from the same composers. This is another Shinji Hosoe one, and there’s still more of him later in the list. I haven’t played any CAVE bullet hell games, but they never seem to go wrong with the music!
57. Ninja Gaiden - I am Man (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 4 people.
VIDEO
Yeah, the only reason I picked this one is because of its absurd resemblance to Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man”. I don’t think anybody knows for sure if it’s an intentional cover, but the similarities are hard to ignore if not; even the name is lexically similar! Apparently it was removed from several versions of the game due to the resemblance, even. Dang.
58. Nintendo Land - Stage 1 (Octopus Dance) (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 2 people.
VIDEO
This was originally going to be the SMW Athletic Remix in this game, but then I changed it after realizing there are way too many remixed Mario songs in here already. For a minigame about dance, they sure know how to get you to dance. Nintendo has managed to make over 3 songs out of the beeps of the Game & Watch, which I respect since they all sound great. I've probably played too much Nintendo Land for my own good.
59. Astal - Glacial Rift (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
Here begins my joke that isn’t really a joke of a series of glacier-related songs. I don’t know what spurred me to do this, but I love it. It starts off with a song from one of the greatest atmospheric soundtracks ever created - Astal’s music is a mixed bag of pure gold, from dark and slow tracks like this one to more upbeat, RPG-esque songs. I absolutely love the guitar section in this one that comes in around 1:22, if you choose to listen to the full song, but I greatly recommend the whole soundtrack.
60. Bomberman 64 - White Glacier (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 2 people, series guessed by 1.
VIDEO
Second in the glacier saga is Bomberman 64, whose soundtrack seems to be mostly undermined by its sequel, but still has some nice tunes.
61. Freedom Planet - Battle Glacier 1 (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by SomeGuy712x!
VIDEO
I know nothing about this game, but this song rules. And is glacier-themed, of course.
62. Rayman Origins - Glacier Cocktail (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 3 people.
VIDEO
Aw yeah! Short but absolutely jam-packed with flavor. I love the string use in this one, it’s just so good all around. I’m no Rayman fanboy but it can’t be denied that Ubisoft has some incredibly talented composers.
63. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity - Great Glacier (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 5 people.
VIDEO
I figured I’d end the glacier saga on an easy note, with one of my all-time favorite songs. Though the best part isn’t until way later in the song than the clip would allow. And also then bebn decided to continue the saga. So there’s not much reason for this song to be here, I guess. Welp. (Also this game is kinda lame. I should have used my PMD card on Super instead…)
64. Super Princess Peach - Gleam Glacier 1 (Picked by bebn)

I picked this song to continue the glacier joke that Sinc-X had set up. Admittedly, I've never played Super Princess Peach, but I want to. I have vague memories of walking by the case for it in a Best Buy, years ago, intrigued by the cover.
65. TalesWeaver - Take A Step Forward (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 3 people.
VIDEO
Probably best known for being the World 1 map theme in JUMP, which is why I picked it-- the intro leaves you a little confused, and then it hits you that you've heard this somewhere before, but you're not sure where. Again though, this is just a lovely song too. It gave me a great impression of JUMP when I first played it.
66. Super Marisa World - World 3 (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 6 people, series guessed by 1.

Another one everyone knows from use in SMW. I guess this one tripped people up more than Arle vs Rulue, though. I wonder why.
67. Hyper Reverthion - A Glint in the Eye of the Red Lion (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
Oops it’s more Hyakutaro Tsukumo. I can’t tell if this is a sequel to Hyper Duel or not. Same company, same composer, same first word ... but it seems like this is a separate thing? I have no idea, but the music is great so who cares!
68. Parasite Eve - Out of Phase (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 3 people.
VIDEO
I’m unfamiliar with the game itself, but I heard U.B. from this game originally a million years ago on some top VGM list and the soundtrack has stuck with me ever since. I opted to not choose U.B. tho because the first part of that song is suuuper boring LOL
69. Wild Arms Alter Code: F - Filgaia (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 3 people, series guessed by 5.
VIDEO
This one is only a half-troll, since the incorrect guess is still the right series. But yeah, this is the song from the JUMPhalf world 1 overworld, except from the remake version of Wild Arms.
70. Kuru Kuru Kururin - Cave (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 3 people.
VIDEO
Everyone knows the Neo Land port from Kururin Paradise, but this is a song in a similar vein that gets a lot less attention. Super cute and happy and wonderful - a highlight in the GBA library.
71. Tower of Heaven - Indignant Divinity (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 17 people.
VIDEO
Partially fueled by music remoderation, partially fueled by VLDC 8. The first time I heard this song was in VLDC8's Throwblock Heaven, and I fell in love with it (the level's nice aesthetics certainly helped.) Cut to last month, I was going through the music section and relabeling things, when I found three versions of some Tower of Heaven song, when I remembered how great the game's OST is. All that being said, I have no clue what Tower of Heaven is about lol.
72. Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 - Overworld (Super Mario Bros.) (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 8 people, series guessed by 19.
VIDEO
This is probably 17 different levels of cruel, but it felt great to put something that felt so deceptively obvious. This plays in an e-Reader-exclusive remake of SMB's 1-1 and 1-3 in SMA4. I did originally fear that this is too close to the All-Stars arrangement beyond the bitcrush, but there's a few little arrangement differences if you pay attention, the most noticeable being the off-key orchestra hit right at the beginning. The fun thing about picking the SMB1 overworld theme is that it's been remixed 700 billion times, so good luck figuring out where it's from. In fact, it's in this contest three times, but all from completely different sources.
73. Starsky and Hutch - Overworld 2 (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
It may come as a surprise, but this is a Tim Follin song! I wanted to include a Follin song somewhere, because DUH, but I didn’t want to pick one that was too obvious, since I like the idea of recognizing a composer’s style but having to dig to figure out where it’s actually from. Except in this case that didn’t happen - I was originally gonna pick a different song from this game, which has Follin written all over it, but then I fell in love with this one after listening through the whole soundtrack and couldn’t resist picking it. Phenomenal stuff.
74. Homebrew Channel (Nintendo Wii) - Main Theme (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 11 people.
VIDEO
Originally, I wanted to pick one of the other Wii channels, but then I settled on the Homebrew Channel for some reason. Unfortunately, this accidentally deceived a LOT of people into thinking it was the impostor song, which wasn't the intention at all, since it still ties into video games in the grand scheme of things. Anyways, when I was younger, the channel animation always made me thirsty, while the word "brew" made me think of coffee. I don't think I was stupid enough to think it would make my Wii spit out coffee though.
75. Mario Party 10 - Wario Amiibo Theme (Stonecarving City) (Picked by bebn)
(Gave partial credit for Wario guesses because it's under the Mario series umbrella)
Guessed by 2 people, series guessed by 6.
VIDEO
Most people know about Stonecarving City, but nobody ever touched the Amiibo mode in Mario Party 10, including me. Doesn't help that I lost the disc. I don't even remember how I found out this remix exists, but it isn't the only one. There's a bunch of cute remixes of various Mario songs like this for the Amiibo mode. Too bad gameplay centered around Amiibos is uninteresting so nobody ever heard them.
76. Wonder Momo - Main Theme 2 (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
I'd never heard of Wonder Momo before, but the Transformation theme from it appears in one of the Namco medleys from Smash 4, and it's probably one of my favourite songs in there. Originally, I wanted to pick it, but in order to not make every song guessable by going through the Smash sound test, I settled for Main Theme 2. It's a funky little song.
77. Famicom Tantei Club: Part II - Sunset (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by Centipede!
VIDEO
Once again inspired by Smash, this time by the Famicom Medley from Brawl, which was my starting point. Again, most of my decision came from obscurity. I've gone through the OST of this game a few times, and it's weird, a certain number of songs in this game sound less and less interesting the more you listen to them, Sunset being one of them. It's nice, but at the same time, I've quickly gotten sick of it.
78. Starfox 2 - Macbeth (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 2 people, series guessed by 2.
VIDEO
Picking songs based on obscurity is fun, doubly so when it's obscure because the game was just never released, which is the case here. When comparing the OSTs, I realized that a lot of the songs sound somewhat similar to the original Starfox, so I tried to go with one of the songs that sounded most different. Starfox 2's Macbeth sounds so much nicer than the first one's though, in my opinion.
79. Snatcher - One Night in Neo Kobe City (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 2 people.
VIDEO
A classic VGM tourney nomination. What I neglected to consider is that a lot of people active currently probably have never even seen any of the tourneys! I’m glad a couple people got it though.
80. Sword of Mana - Courage and Pride of the Heart (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 5 people, series guessed by 2.
VIDEO
Here’s some classic straight-up unfiltered Kenji Ito. His signature style is one of my absolute favorites, even if it can get a bit same-y. Maybe I just have a soft spot for old Japanese hacks. Also, if you guessed Final Fantasy Adventure, don’t worry as you still get a series point - FFA is Seiken Densetsu 1, the first in the Mana series, and Sword of Mana is a remake of that game. It’s confusing, but that’s how it is!
81. Racing Gears Advance - Magnum (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
I am absolutely addicted to this song. It’s by Neil Voss, the same guy who composed for Tetrisphere, which you’ve probably heard of.
82. Neko Atsume - Main Theme (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 4 people.
VIDEO
This song just makes you happy, like the rest of the game. I played a lot of Neko Atsume, and I had all the mementos at one point, before they updated the game and added more cats. When looking through my phone for potential game songs to add, this felt like one of the most recognizable, which is why I picked it. Somebody thought Sinc-X picked this, but nope, it was me!
83. Atelier Lulua - Kalma (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody, series guessed by 1.
VIDEO
The Atelier series has some of my all-time favorite music, and this game, the newest one in the series, is no exception - and might have my favorite Atelier soundtrack overall. There’s a certain quality to Kazuki Yanagawa and Ken Nakagawa’s music that I can’t quite explain but that I absolutely adore, and I always love the ways they use folk instruments in a more modern context. Cross Wind is probably my favorite song from this game, but this one is way up there too.
84. Adventures of Batman and Robin - Final Boss (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 2 people.
VIDEO
Shocked that more people didn’t get this one! I thought this song was pretty famous for Jesper Kyd’s super unique Genesis sound design, but I guess not! In any case this one’s a total banger.
85. Sheep, Dog n' Wolf / Sheep Raider - Time Warp (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
I had never heard of this game until a few months ago, but holy crap does it have some incredible music, this song included. Apparently this game was a lot of people’s childhoods, but I suppose a good chunk of the audience here wouldn’t be old enough for that!
86. Pokémon Quest - Happenstance Island (Mountain) (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
Shinji Hosoe in a Pokémon game? Yeah. This song is great - I intentionally let the clip go a bit too long to try and throw people off, though. If you didn’t hear that voice shouting “MORTAL KOMBAT” before, you sure as hell will now and you’ll never unhear it. By the way, is this game actually even remotely popular? I stumbled upon the soundtrack by accident, having never heard of it prior, but it’s got some great songs.
87. Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games - Staff Credits (Super Mario 64) (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 4 people, series guessed by 6.
VIDEO
Mario & Sonic games tend to have so many banging remixes of Mario songs, so I definitely wanted to pick one. However, most of them end up being very obvious, like GCN Mushroom Bridge, which I had in mind. Going through the OST, I settled for the Super Mario 64 credits theme since the arrangement actually changed the song's pacing, and made it a little harder to recognize. GCN Mushroom Bridge remains my favourite remix though, I love that track.
88. Godzilla: Domination! - Nova-b (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
More obscure Jake Kaufman! Though this one is a lot less obscure than Centipede: Infestation. The song is a lot better, too. The rest of the soundtrack is pretty mediocre but this track is a total bop that I come back to quite often.
89. Doki Doki Panic - Aboveground (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 10 people.
VIDEO
To all those who guessed Super Mario Bros. 2, I'm sorry, but you fell into my trap. I remembered that Doki Doki Panic had a completely different Subspace theme, so I went through the OST just for fun, which is when I realized that the overworld theme is actually different as well. The instruments sound a little crappier, but even if you didn't notice that, I made sure to include the loop point just as the song fades out, since the SMB2 version has an extra segment there.
90. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap - Minigame (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 2 people.
VIDEO
I played lots of lots of Minish Cap a few years ago, on my 3DS, and I don't think I've actually beaten it yet. It's one of the most satisfying Zelda games to play, I find. I knew I wanted to pick a song from it, but again, I went for a song that doesn't immediately sound like Zelda. This song brings back nightmare memories of chasing after Cuccos. But it's cute at least.
91. Street Fighter IV - Cammy's Theme (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 6 people, series guessed by 5.
VIDEO
I first heard Cammy's theme in her Spirit battle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and I instantly fell in love with the song. As much as I love the FM synthesisness of the original, I figured it would be too obvious, not to mention that it's also in Smash, so I went looking for a remix of it to pick instead, and I found this. Street Fighter has really good music overall though, so picking a track wasn't easy. But I think this song's just slightly more of a favourite of mine.
92. Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song - Decisive Battle! Saruin (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 6 people, series guessed by 2.
VIDEO
Damn right I picked three SaGa songs. This one’s definitely the easiest of them, though, an absolute classic. I imagine many people know this from the SMW port of it, as well.
93. Mario & Wario - Sky (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 3 people.
VIDEO
Near the end of us preparing the contest, I decided to put a Mario & Wario song after I randomly remembered that it's a game that exists. Going through the OST (which was uglier than I remembered lol), I figured this song was interesting to put because most of the melody was recycled into Pokémon Red/Blue's Route 24/25, so it might accidentally sound familiar to some. Route 24 and 25 sound much better though, maybe it's the samples.
94. Mamorukun Curse! - Blossom Shower (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by 2 people.
VIDEO
This is from the same game as YO-KAI Disco, that one song that had the memes or something. I dunno. But it’s Yousuke Yasui, so who cares?? I wasn’t sure if people would know this one, but I suppose Yasui’s style is pretty obvious here so it wouldn’t take too long to find if you knew what to look for!
95. Itadaki Street DS - SNES Mario Circuit (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 2 people, series guessed by 18.
VIDEO
SNES Mario Circuit is just a good song, and I'm sure most people know it, so to make things more interesting, I had to pick a more obscure arrangement of it! And it lines up well that this was on the DS, so the sample quality could've led people to believe it was from Mario Kart DS instead. But that remix is much crunchier than this one. Anyways, this game's boxart was my first contact with Dragon Quest. I found the slime funny.
sincx note: A lot of people confidently guessed this as Fortune Street. This is in fact a different game, and while the remix is extremely similar to the one in Fortune Street, there are certain differences that distinguish the two. It’s the same series though, so you still got 1 point for a Fortune Street guess.
96. Gyromite - Game B BGM (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by SomeGuy712x!
VIDEO
One day, I was reading about R.O.B. on Wikipedia, and therefore, the games associated with him. That's when it hit me that his games must have some sort of OST, and so I started looking through them. It also checked the box of classic NES game song. As I was typing this paragraph, a giant nasty mosquito stick bug thing flew towards me and I ran away from my laptop. I don't know where it went and I'm afraid now.
97. Mighty Switch Force 2 - Rainbow Love Zone (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
I was really really surprised that nobody got this one - I picked this one intending it to be one of the easiest ones on the list!! I don’t know if people are just unfamiliar with this sequel, which IMO has way better music than MSF1, or if the series as a whole is way more unknown than I thought, or maybe the song I picked is just way overshadowed by ones like Exothermic and Glow. SHRUG! But if you haven’t heard the soundtrack I strongly recommend you do, it’s one of Kaufman’s best.
98. Joy Mech Fight - Sunset Beach (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 3 people.
VIDEO
Once again, the Brawl Famicom Medley was my starting point, and I started digging through the OST of Joy Mech Fight. This has got to be one of my favourite songs in the game, but I also like how the beginning in particular feels compositionally familiar as far as NES games go. I've never played Joy Mech Fight, so I sort of have my own visualization of what the scenery for this song would look like.
99. It's Mr. Pants! - Menu (Picked by Sinc-X)

HQ RIPS
R1. iCarly (DS) - Final Boss (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 4 people, series guessed by 1. Joke guessed by 6.
VIDEO
The dramaticness of this remix combined with the crappiness of the DS samples made me love this rip. I also just love the iCarly theme song since it gets me nostalgic. I originally only put this as a placeholder, but as time went on, we decided to keep it, I don't know why. A recurring theme as far as my rip selections go was to pick nonexistent games or nonexistent songs to make searching things much harder, and this was the first example of that.
R2. Kirby Does His Taxes - Financial Islands (Picked by bebn)
(Also accepted Kirby Super Star - Float Islands)
Guessed by 11 people, series guessed by 4. Joke guessed by 11.
VIDEO
This rip was my first time ever hearing Brain Power, and I really loved the energy the song has. I'm still not completely sure where the original song is from, but hey, I'll still jam to it in memes. Plus, Float Islands is a great song as well, and the key change of the beginning does make the song cuter. Finally, the game it's listed as doesn't exist either. So it checked off all the boxes, really. It's one of those rips I can unironically jam to.
R3. Touhou 16: Hidden Star in Four Seasons - Seasonical Astronomy Fantasy (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 3 people, series guessed by 4. Joke guessed by 3.
VIDEO
I still remember waking up the day this rip was uploaded and then realizing Touhou 16 was a real thing. I love Touhou-style song, especially joke/fake ones like this. It's always fun to analyze them compositionally, and also in terms of instruments. But even beyond that, it's just a nice song too. I think a decent amount of people realized that this was a Touhou-style song, but just like 15 and E01, left them stumped because only the style is familiar. Also, the bug I mentioned in 96’s blurb came back.
R4. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door - X-Naut Fortress (Picked by Sinc-X)

EXTREME SONGS
E1. Mrs. Estacion - In a moment ~ momentarily (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
I don't really remember how I learned about this game's existence, but I've played it before, and even on screenshare in the Discord once. It's essentially a clone of Touhou, even moreso than Len'en (which at least has its own unique mechanics), right down to the title screen leitmotif, which is what made me pick this song. Originally, I was going to pick the Stage 2 theme since I love it a lot, but I was deviously happy to use the Theme of Eastern Story in the title music as big obvious bait.
E2. Love Death ~Realtime Lovers~ - Walk Walk (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
Couldn't find a video with this song in it, so this is the next best thing.
Uhhhhhhhh don’t look this one up! It’s from a 3D..hentai..visual novel...thing! I think that’s enough said.
E3. Pingu no Waku Waku Carnival - BGM N04 (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
The only video of the song has been taken down, so here's the soundtrack on Zophar.
This is expert even for myself, as I couldn't find the name of the song. And now, the YouTube account hosting the song was terminated, so you have to take my word for it that this song exists (or check Zophar, but you know). I'm not even sure how I learned about the existence of this game. The best explanation I can offer is that my cousins and I had a whole phase of a Pingu obsession. But hey, the song is cute.
E4. Super Mario War - Main Theme (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 2 people, series guessed by 9.
VIDEO
I played this game so much when I was younger, but I still have no idea how I discovered it. I wouldn't even play it properly. Being a sore loser easy-mode player, I'd set all the other characters to human-controlled, and then win by default as the only one moving. Nowadays, when I occasionally launch the game, I try to play it properly. But yeah, this is the second instance on the SMB overworld theme in this contest, and it was intended to be one of the easier Expert songs. I'm not sure how popular this game is, but ultimately, I figured I'd put it under Expert.
E5. Pokémon Red/Blue - Unused Theme (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 4 people.
VIDEO
Most of the Expert songs seem to have a trend of me not knowing how I discovered the songs, and this is one of them. This is actually a version restored by BGVC* on YouTube, since the original song's instruments are completely wrong, and the whole thing sounds like a horrifying mess. Now that I think about it, maybe I discovered it while going through the TCRF page for Pokémon Red and Blue, which brings me to the next song.
E6. SNES Test Program - Left Sound Channel Test (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by 2 people.
VIDEO
Now this one, I know for a fact that I discovered it while reading about Super Mario World's beta graphics and the like on TCRF, since the SNES Test Program contains a bunch of them. While compiling the Expert songs, I randomly thought about the SNES Test Program and if it had any music, and it turns out it does, so here we are, the third instance of the SMB1 overworld theme, though guessing "Mario" isn't good enough here! A lot of people thought our .mp3 was panned incorrectly, but nope, that's just how this song is! There's a Right Sound Channel Test as well.
E7. Parsec - Main Theme (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
This game seems like the definition of development hell. Reading through the website is an absolutely bizarre experience. The music is decent at least!
E8. Touhou Tenkarou ~ Frantically Forbidden Fruit - Dragon God Flying to Mount Hourai ~ Oriental Mythology (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody, series guessed by 2.
VIDEO
For the amount of discount Touhou I included, this was one discount Touhou that actually falls under the Touhou brand. This game is a Touhou fangame that plays like the main series games, except the gimmick completely breaks the game, which can be a little fun, honestly. I picked this song because I like it a lot, but also because the instrumentation may not immediately come off as Touhou, even though it's actually very prominently so in the snippet I included (the most obvious being the Retrologue Poly Pops.) The song is really long, but when you listen to the whole thing, it's actually incredibly repetitive.
E9. Persona 5 - Hatred Goemon/Gamble Goemon (Picked by Noivern)
Guessed by 2 people.

I don't really care for this piece but I wanted to submit a lesser-known and easily missable piece from a popular game to see who could get it. I didn't have control whether it was rated extreme or not.
Bebn made me write this.

E10. Not Pokémon Black 2/White 2 - Not a Battle Theme (Composed by bebn)
Guessed by nobody (obviously).
[no video]
This isn't actually a real video game song, but rather something that I quickly composed the day before the contest started :eyes:. It was originally going to be an SNES-styled song that would be compatible with SMW, but after several bouts of demotivation and messing around with the Pokémon Black 2/White 2 soundfont and those arpeggios at the beginning, I settled on making it sound like a legendary battle theme instead, hopefully true to form in its tension and borderline dissonance. I composed this while on voice chat on the SMWC Discord, so one accidental unmute could've ruined the whole thing hehe. Somebody guessed Touhou for this, so I suppose my musical inspirations are clear, even if it wasn’t the intention.
E11. Barrage X Musical ~ A Fantasy of Tempest - Staking It All On A Magical Battle (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
This game is essentially discount Touhou, but with a heavy emphasis on rhythm and the bullet patterns matching the music. I'd only heard a few songs from it beforehand, but I decided to go through the entire OST, and there are quite a few gems in there! Of course, I picked my favourite. I guess I'm pushing the limit of how much Touhou I'm including in here, but hey, it's not technically Touhou.
E12. Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Deluxe 25th Anniversary - Hip Hop (Picked by bebn)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
I only know of this game in theory because of some SiIvaGunner rip of an older version of it, so I thought I'd go ahead and dig through the OST, and for a typing game, there's some great music in here. Out of curiosity, I went on Wikipedia and read about Mavis Beacon, and it messed me up that she's not actually a real person, but a character created specifically for the game. I'd always assumed she was a celebrity or something.
E13. Shin Koihime Musou Otome Taisen Sangokushi - Throne Room (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.
VIDEO
I think I used this one in a previous VGM contest. It’s by S.S.H., that one Japanese guy known for his long, epic rock remixes of video game songs. Turns out his compositional skills are pretty damn good too!
E14. Thunderstrike - Track 09 (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by nobody.

E15. Infinos Gaiden - Get over the light (Picked by Sinc-X)
Guessed by SomeGuy712x!

I can’t say I expected anyone to get this in a million years, though it turns out that someone uploaded this soundtrack to Youtube the day the contest started. How convenient. Prior to that it was absolutely nowhere to be found online, so the only way to hear it would have been to buy the game (which is a pretty decent one, by the way). I bought the soundtrack DLC to get the clip for this, which seems silly now that someone uploaded the OST, but I don’t regret anything because it’s excellent - more great work by Hyakutaro Tsukumo!

On our end, it’s been fun hosting this contest, seeing whether our guesses about your guesses were correct, and especially if you’d fall into some of our devilish traps. We’ve taken note of a few flaws in our system this time around that we’ll try to address better in the future, but we hope you still had fun. If you notice any errors in the results, please let one of us know right away - there was a lot to keep track of so it’s not unlikely we missed a couple things, even though we tried our best to keep things organized. Thank you for participating, and see you next time!

Pretty chuffed with the results! I don't get one thing though. Was my correct guess of the Homebrew Channel theme not counted because I thought it to be the impostor?
On that, you defined "impostor" as "not actually from a video game!" Not "no ties to video games"
But yeah, besides the Homebrew Channel, I was right on all guesses that I was sure of! All the others I've literally never gotten close to due to never playing (or hearing of) those games, so I'm pleased!

Yeah, ngl, honestly, I think I'm much happier with this result,
even if I at least wanted to get third place, since that means that I can find peeps that are much more experienced with VGM then I am, and really, with the fact that I have gotten 4th place (which is actually still very high btw, but still), definitely proves that I'm not the only guy that likes VGM around here (tho admittely I'm one of the most vocal about it, so heh
); I actually didn't expect SomeGuy to actually know this much about VGM, but yeah, I only really seen him in Youtube comments and haven't talked to him at all; still tho, I'm impressed
Also, I'm fairly happy that I haven't actually gotten many wrong answers for the guesses that I made (tho yeah, Devil Engine instead of Hyper Duel was trippy AF, like c'mon man, I literally only found out about the soundtrack for a very short time lmao, I wasn't even aware that a Cosmo Babylon arrangement was on there on top of that), but yeah, I felt that I could have probably bullshitted some guesses out as well (the Hyakutaro Tsukumo and Shinji Hosoe songs that I didn't get especially could have somewhat "benefitted" from that)
And honestly, just saying, but a lot of songs were very unfair to guess, both for me and for a lot of people lol; the Sakura Blast one especially I only gotten it because I just so happened to run by it while browsing Soundcloud, and was also kinda curious about the whole soundtrack since Jimmy made a SPC of the credits theme from that game in Idol 9, so I mean, yeah :V
Still tho, this was a great VGM game, and honestly I think I'm definitely happier with not winning anything this time, so it was a great result for me haha

Wow, I can't beleive there are people who did worse than me, since mostoof the songs didn't ring a single bell.
Edit: After looking at the list I noticed a lot of the songs were from games I actually played, sometimes it's easy to forget some themes.
Posted on 2019-07-15 03:36:01 AM
Holy banana pudding! Wow, I figured my score would at least be in the 80s, but I didn't expect 98, and I didn't know whether anyone would score higher than me. Still, Blue Leaf and K.T.B. did score quite well too, so congratulations to them getting 2nd and 3rd!
Anyway, as well as I did, there's still some I feel like I should've known, or at least want to comment on:
015 really sounded like a Touhou song to me, and I wasn't entirely wrong. I just didn't think to check the Len'en series songs.
For 018, I correctly figured it was Animal Crossing, but after taking forever to check the GameCube game's soundtrack, I just didn't want to bother checking the others.
030 really sounded like a familiar NES or Game Boy song to me, and I did skim over a list of all Game Boy games, checking the ones I thought it could've potentially been. However, I overlooked checking Game Boy Camera. D'oh.
I think 034 bothers me the most. I KNEW this one sounded like it was from an NES game I played, and it indeed was. However, I only browsed over a list of official NES games, and forgot to consider that bootleg SMW game that I have done a YouTube playthrough of in the past. Argh!
Ah, so 038 was the impostor. Yeah, I never would've figured that out.
057 gave me a laugh when I figured it out. One of the first things I checked was if there was an Iron Man game for the Genesis, and there is... sorta. I found a playthrough of a bootleg one. However, its music wasn't even close. Later on, while doing other random searching for whatever I could find, I happened to stumble upon it!
058 is another "D'oh" for me, as I did check the Nintendo Land soundtrack during my random searches, but somehow failed to notice this one.
065 is yet another "D'oh", because I did think to check the TalesWeaver soundtrack, and even went over it a few times while trying to compare to all the songs on this list, but I missed this one anyway.
For 069, thank you, JUMP ½'s main overworld theme! I knew it sounded like an enhanced version of that Wild Arms overworld theme, so I immediately checked Alter Code F, and bingo!
For 072, I meant to check the GBA Mario games, since its quality sounded GBA, but never got around to it. Oh, well.
Wow, 084 did have me completely fooled, since it sounded so similar to the Vectorman title theme. And, I had guessed that it was perhaps the impostor.
For 087, I didn't consider checking the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series.
089 was almost another "D'oh", since I knew it sounded almost, but not quite identical to SMB2 NES. However, I suddenly thought of Doki Doki Panic on the final day before the deadline, fortunately.
Oh, I didn't quite get 095 correct. I had checked Fortune Street of course, and I did think the audio quality wasn't quite 100% identical, but still guessed the original Fortune Street anyway, since I wasn't aware of the DS version.
B02, I knew was Kirby related, but all of my searching somehow failed to locate that exact song.
At least I totally nailed one of the SiIvaGunner rips, B03, which I figured out on the final day before the deadline.
For E01, I was kinda on the right track when I thought it sounded Touhou-like, but I didn't check the fan games, and I probably wouldn't have thought of that one anyway, even though I do remember having watched videos of it long ago.
E05 is another case of "D'oh", as I knew it sounded familiar, but going over that list of Game Boy games didn't help me, since I immediately dismissed the Pokémon titles without checking them, not thinking of the possibility of unused songs.
And, E11 being Barrage X Musical is kind of another "D'oh". I have played the demo of that Steam game a while ago, and did buy the full game, but never got around to playing or even installing the full game yet.
For the rest of the ones that I didn't figure out, I don't feel too bad, as a lot of them were very obscure to me, and I'm pleasantly surprised I managed to randomly find as many as I did.
(BTW, this forum page horribly lags on me, even if I don't click "Show" for the 120 embedded songs.)

I'm really ashamed at myself I didn't get 002, because it didn't spring into my mind until after the contest ended, so I just made a random as heck unlikely guess. Ah well, it was still pretty fun regardless.
I only remembered 051 because it was featured in a much older VGM guessing contest some 4 years ago (and also because I looked up the lyrics....but I guess that's a bonus for being a French speaker)...though I really could've probably also gotten 069 (since I watched raocow's LP of JUMP1/2, which is why it felt familiar to me) aside from 002.
Quick note about 047, it actually seems to miss some YM2608 samples (because Anex86 (the PC-98 emulator some people use, I myself favour Neko Project 21) does not support them at all) in the YT upload.
This is how it's supposed to sound like. --------------------

I really wasn't expecting to do that well actually! A lot of these were just unknown for me or blind guesses, and in the end I somehow managed to score a lot of points. Kinda unfortunate that I didn't fall into the top 3 but this was all just for fun, so it's no biggie. Even had the same points as Ultima, hehe.
Congrats to the winners and the contestants! --------------------

I would never have guessed more than half of those if I actually bothered to submit my guesses in time
Congrats, everyone!

Originally posted by Ultima, directed at me in the last thread most of the VGM that I like are mostly the same with what Sinc-X likes really, so it's pretty easy for me to know about these ... probably why you are having such a hard time with this (mostly because you don't seem to be into that sorta music very much, from what I've seen)

Well that was fun! I suppose the winner was pretty easy to predict considering the fact that I think he's won more of these contests than anyone else on this site, but congrats to everyone else as well.
I'd like to say that I really appreciate the fact that each pick has a "story" behind them in the results or a few words about how they were discovered - makes for a more interesting advertisement of the sources and is fun to read after the results are posted, so I hope future contests (if there ever are any) will continue to do that!
I am a little confused about E10 though. How could anyone have known that? Especially if you were muted on the Discord as bebn was writing it? It looks like the point of that pick is that it was "impossible" for anyone to ever know it, but in that case I don't really get why it was included.

E10 was just a dumb joke to get people a bit confused and/or talking about it - we had no intention of it being guessable, we just wanted to have a bit of fun playing with ppls heads a bit

I only got a few of them, but I'm glad I got a unique answer. Mercury Meltdown Revolution was actually the first game I got for the Wii so 9 seemed familiar.
For 38, the impostor, I thought it sounded like something from Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, but I couldn't find it in the OST.
My favourite was definitely 63, though. While it's not my favourite PMD track (I think it's excellent, but there are many that I like even more) it was definitely extremely welcome amidst a long list of songs I had no clue about.

@K.T.B Honestly, I was actually kind of surprised at first that you managed to get most of those guesses actually, but then again, my VGM knowledge in general is still not quite there yet, and you're much more experienced than me, so I can't say I should be surprised really ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
a lot of your guesses were songs that I didn't really know of that much, or arguably even had much interest on really (not the Atelier guess tho, I was actually kinda thinking of listening to the series's soundtrack since quite a few VGM friends of mine from a Discord server I frequent are really into the music of those games), tho I am kinda surprised you'd know about Ibara as well lmao (then again, if you know about Show Time under Leaden Skies's existence like I do, then it would probably be pretty obvious :V)

i forgot to submit my guesses I would've done okay, I guessed 90% of these thanks to ROM hacks and some that were way too obvious. I fell into some version traps because I don't play videogames. But I got Doki Doki Panic right bitches
I was befuddled by 21 and 91 because I
knew I heard them before, especially 21 which has been an overused port in the past. The name "Powell" strikes me as heavily familiar now. I don't know where I had 91 from, prolly a port as well, but it was extremely familiar (I could finish the song in my head).
e: also I thought 57 was supposed to be the non-VGM -.-
