well, i've finished my judging. final thoughts:

-just because the rom has a ton of sprites for you to use does not mean you have to use them all. seriously. pick two or three and then get creative with those.
-no, really. i do not need every single kind of "bros" enemy on a flat plain. stop that. seriously, lather fucking bubbles all over your level and it will be better than the hodgepodge play (tm)
-there's actually way less usage of the punchy sprite than you may think, and basically everyone who DID use it did so in some super neat ways, so good job there.
-except that entry that was just level 106 but with a ton of punchy sprites everywhere. come on.
-i have a fair number of guesses on who made my personal top three - however, there are a couple of extremely great entries that i couldn't even think of the author on, so.. if you're a new designer and a first-timer to smwc's contests, you might actually be so much more awesome than you assumed you were. hang tight.
-nobody used the fake boo door. seriously, i like to think i can come up with some pretty radical ways to use even the most random of sprites, but that one is beyond me. throw it in the trash. it's dumb. i hate it. seriously, why does it exist?
-the boo door is shit.
-you know what sprite was surprisingly underutilized? the mini mushroom power-up. the one entry that did use it had some pretty creative ideas, so, uh.. man, maybe loosen up on the firebar usage a bit and go for that next time??
-some people seem to still think this is a vldc and not a bldc. yes, you sculpted the mona lisa's pristine asshole out of vanilla tiles and i'm proud of you, but next time actually use the resources that were provided to you to boost that sweet creativity score.
-stop submitting kaizo levels. i know this is a super subjective and grey area, but reaction-based gameplay is seriously a niche thing. 90% of us don't play these hacks and it's so hard to compare your entry with more flying fish than the pacific fucking ocean to a level with a reasonable difficulty that used all of the sprites in a creative way. is your level creative or well-designed? i don't know, i got torn to meat chunks by the first muncher that made eye contact with me. sorry i'm bad at video games, i'm bad at a lot of other things too so let me have this witty comment at least.
-there's one level that is like, the most gorgeous thing i've seen in my 15ish years of doing smw hacking shit (has it seriously been that long?). good job, author. you should be an artist.
-fuck the boo door.

all 4 of my ideas with the power-up got scrapped because of how unreliable and janky it was. hit detection was a meme and the bounce effect wasnt compatible with any of the custom stuff
