gonna spend a bit more time this contest polishing graphics and stuff at the beginning so I have more to work with compared to vldc11

taught myself yy-chr so I can actually do simple neat merging things woohoo



(none of this is actual level design I'm just testing things)

contemplating if Blargg is "fire" enough or if I should sacrifice his nose to have cool platforms

next step is to mess with palettes to make things look cool, been trying to have a bit of a "sooty" ground to make it more volcano-y but I've yet to satisfy myself

Please make sure all responses in this thread are funny haha or suggestions on how I can make things more :fire: :100:, thank you for your time.

The only reason I made this thread is so I'll actually commit to finishing something because I dunno if I will otherwise

im assuming this is the levels name, right?
Undecided, biggest detracting factor is that it doesn't fit in the level title

Might simplify it later but I do think it's neat

you could just make your level title in the layer 3 editor for the submap's border like i did for lazy and i's vldc11 entry lol.

Palette test go



The main ground color was me googling the hex color for Basalt, the ground is ashy enough but I'm worried it's too dark

Since I don't know how to make gifs just imagine in this screenshot the rock on the left is bouncing on invisible punchy sprites and the rock on the about to kill Mario bounced on some invisible slopes offscreen

Yeah I think the ground is too dark right now. You see, SMW cave palettes are darker on the bulk and lighter on the surface, and even if you wanted to convey that ashy aestethics it feels weird as of now.

Licecap is i think the universal standard. It's definitely the easiest option.

Might I suggest something a bit more like this for the ground palette?



It's dark like basalt but with a little bit of red heat shimmer.
Had a good idea for my palette problem and was testing it out and then decided to go with FP's suggestion because wow that's some smexy rocks

speaking of rocks, rocks that fall out of the sky are fun and they make for pretty good obstacles as long as you don't douchebag them in anywhere. they're also a pretty good way to add a bit of difficulty to sections that are too easy to make the curve of the level more intact

here's me putting that notion to the test

IMO, the foreground should be a little lighter. As it is, it kinda blends in the the background, which might confuse players.

Now for the most infuriating thing you'll see all day



Don't know why? Imagine, if you will, you hit the first cycle of the gray pendulum platform, only for the platform to swing to the right, through the ground, and have no more collision when it reaches the other side, because something about the position of the pendulum bar and everything else prior to this point in the level causes the pendulum platform to lose its collision when the pendulum firebar loads, and can also rarely cause every single sprite in the level to unload

Random factors like starting mario later in the level circumvent this glitch. Removing only the previous pendulum platforms doesn't change anything, but removing every single previous sprite in the level fixes it.

Only posting my thoughts here because they're incredibly infuriating and honestly hilarious in a sick way
