Custom Sprites and custom foreground textures

Can custom sprites be used with different custom foreground textures, or will it fail?
That will work. Sprite and foreground/background graphics are stored separately and do not interfere with each other; as seen in the Lunar Magic Super GFX Bypass. For example, say a custom sprite is mapped to use SP3, while the level's custom foreground is mapped to BG3 - as you can tell, they're mapped to separate slots, therefore, they won't affect each other.

Now (and this is just a personal quirk of mine), while you can mix the two, I'd suggest not getting too crazy with the graphical styles. Like, an SMB3 hammer bro in a level that uses Donkey Kong Country foreground graphics would clash pretty hard, for instance.
What about those that require a patch? BTW how do you create your own background or change the lighting? I have plans to create a digital style level with white code against a blue background while making the color of all the sprites pure black, to give a computery feel to it
