Bowser’s kingdom has been infested by Munchers. These are, however, no ordinary Munchers, they are smart and sneaky. During the day, they disguise themselves as Koopas, which makes them impossible to identify. During the night, they eat the citizens. The kingdom has entered a state of crisis, in order to deal with the situation, King Bowser ordered his subject to meet every day and execute one citizen who will be chosen by vote majority.
About the game
If you played Mafia or Werewolves before, including the old Mafia game here at SMWC, then you probably already know what this is about. For this game, I am taking inspiration from
The Werewolves of Milles Hollow
and its expansions, as this version of the game has a large variety of roles to play with. I made a few changes from the original Milers Hollow rules which include:
-Nobody dies during the first night, this is so everyone who signs up has a chance to play.
-There is a cap to the number of players who can be chosen for execution or mayor.
-The Mayor's vote no longer counts twice, and their only power is to break ties in the votes.
-For now, I will not include buildings or event cards, only regular roles. This may change in the future.
-As a result of the above, I am not considering the Pyromaniac role. The Raven can still be played and doesn't require their target to own a building.
-The Little Girl role was removed because it does not translate to forum gameplay.
-The Village Idiot was removed because it's a pointless role.
-The role names were changed to adapt the game to the Mario universe.
: Meta Rules Show/Hide
These are a set of rules I made to addapt the game to forum gameplay.
You sign up in this thread and once we have enough players, we start. Each game will have a host who will be in charge of running it and will not participate in the game. I will host the first game, but anyone is free to host future games. If the host does not update the game in 72 hours, the game will end and a new one will start.
All players will be listed in the order they signed up. The player above and below you on the list are considered to be next to you, and the top player is considered to be next to the bottom one. This is to mimic a room where everyone is sitting at a round table. When a player dies, they are removed from the list, this means your neighbors may change as the game progresses.
At the start of each game, you will be assigned one role at random. Your role will be PM’d or DM’d to you by the host.
Each player knows their own role, but may not know the roles of other players (unless stated otherwise by the role description). It is against the rules to reveal, hint or blatantly lie about your role.
Any secret action you perform must be sent to the host in private. Public actions must be posted in this thread.
Any discussion about the current game (theories, reasons to vote, etc.) must be done in this thread during daytime. Unless stated by your role’s description, you may not plan or discuss aspects of the game in private.
Players have 24 hours to decide their actions, if they do not act in that time, their turn will be skipped.
Breaking the rules will disqualify you from the current game and your character will be treated as being killed. Repeated offenses may get you banned from signing up in future games.
: Game Rules Show/Hide
Depending on your role, you may be part of one of two main factions: Team Bowser, or Team Muncher. The goal of each team is to eliminate the other (however, if the Munchers have the voting majority, and no third parties or players with abilities to kill are alive, they win automatically). The Munchers are fewer, but they know who the other munchers are, Team Bowser does not. When a player dies, their role is revealed and they can no longer participate in the current game.
The game cycles between night and day, affecting what the players may do ad following.
Every night, the munchers wake up and chose a player to eat. All munchers must agree on a single player before they can eat them. Some players have special roles (e.g. magikoopa) that allow them to make actions during the night.
The game starts at night, the first night of the game is dubbed Night 0. No players die during night 0 (this means the Munchers don’t wake up this night), this is to give every player a chance to play. Instead, Night 0 is when start-of-the-game actions (like Lakitu’s) take place.
Since the townsfolk is asleep at night, all night actions are secret and must be comunicated privately to the host.
Every day, all players reunite and vote on who will be executed at the sunset. Every player is allowed to nominate one person or vote for one of the nominees. The maximum number of nominees is equal to the number of munchers +1, but may not go below 3. At the end of the day, the person with most votes is killed. When nominating someone, you must say why you choose to do so; you may give any reason as long as you don’t break the meta rules.
During the first day, before voting on who to kill, the players must choose a mayor. Up to number of munchers +1 players may postulate themselves for mayor. When postulating, you must give a speech explaining why people should vote for you. If there is a tie in the execution votes and no goombas are alive, the mayor chooses who gets to die. If they mayor dies, they get to choose a successor.
Unless stated otherwise, all daytime actions are public and must be posted in this thread.
: Roles Show/Hide
Not every game will have every role. Which roles are present depends on the host and the number of players.
Team Bowser (The Village)
Green Koopa (Villager)
Just a random Koopa, has no power.
The Boo is able to see through the living’s soul. Each night, before the Muncher’s turn, they will ask the host about a player, and the host will tell them that player’s role.
When the Bob-Omb dies they explode and take another player of their choice with them.
Lakitu is the messenger of love. At the start of the game, they will choose two players and give their names to the host. Said players will fall in love. The lovers may not vote against each other, and if one dies, the other dies too. If the couple is made from a Muncher and a member of Team Bowser, they will become a third party team whose goal is to be the only ones alive.
Each night, right after the Muncher’s turn, they Will wake up. During their turn, the Magikoopa may use one of their spells or both:
*Life spell: Saves this night’s victim from being eaten. If this spell is available, the host will inform the Magikoopa who the munchers choose to eat.
*Death spell: The Magikoopa chooses a player who will die in the next morning.
Note: each spell can only be used once per game. And yes, the magikoopa may save themselves with the life spell.
If this role in played, two more “cards” will be considered when shuffling the roles. At the very beginning of the game, the bandit may swap their role for one of the two that were not distributed.
Old Koopa (Ancient)
Once per game, the Old Koopa will not die if targeted by the munchers. However, if they die by any other means, all the other members of Team Bowser will lose their powers.
If votes end in a tie, they will be chosen to die. When this happens, the Goomba may forbid as many players as they want from voting the next day.
The Chuck is strong enough to fight back against the munchers. At the beginning of every night, they may choose a player (including themselves) to protect, said player will not die that night by any means. They may not choose the same player twice in a row.
At the beginning of the day, they choose a player. Said player will have two additional votes against them in this trial. This action is secret, the the chosen player will be known to everyone.
Red Koopa (Villager, Villager)
Has no power, but starts the game with their role revealed, so everyone knows they’re on Team Bowser.
Hammer Bros (Two sisters)
Two players have this role. Each Hammer Bro knows who is the other one, they are siblings and trust each other. They may communicate in private.
Boomerang Bros (Three brothers)
Same as above, except they are 3
Once per game, they may use their authority as ruler of the kingdom to enforce a second round of votes. To do so, they must inform the host privately they want to use their power before the day ends.
Bullet Bill (Knight with the Rusty Sword)
If they die during the night, they fire themselves, killing the first muncher above them in the name list. (remember the bottom player is considered to be next to the top one).
Big Boo (Fox)
Just like the Boo, they can see into the soul of the living, and they may do it on several people at the time. Each night they choose three players, and if there is at least one Muncher among them, the host will inform the Big Boo (without saying who). However, if there are no Munchers among the chosen players, the big boo loses their Powers.
Chain Chomp (Bear Tamer)
The Chain Chomp has a good scent and may recognize the munchers in disguise near them. If there is a muncher right next to the Chain Chomp, the host will inform them privately. (remember the bottom player is considered to be next to the top one).
Phanto is able to take other’s identities. If this role is played, three additional role “cards” will be considered when shuffling the roles. Up to the third night, Phanto may trade their role card for one of the three additional cards until the next night. After the third night, they are treated as a Green Koopa.
Ninji (Devoted Servant)
During the day, after the voting has been decided, they may reveal their role and then trade their card with the accused’s.
(the werewolves) Team Muncher
Wakes up every night and discusses who to eat with the other munchers. Each night, one player will be eaten by the Munchers. All Munchers know who are the others and may communicate in private. The number of munchers depends on the total number of players.
Giant Muncher (Big Bad Wolf)
This muncher is hungrier and more aggressive than the rest. If no other members of Team Munchers are dead (including Panser and Nipper Plant if applicable; Piranha Plant is not a member of Team Muncher), they wake up a second time and chose a player to eat.
Muncher King (Father of the Wolves)
Once per game, they may turn a Muncher’s victim into a Muncher instead of killing them. That players will keep any powers they originally had.
(note: regular munchers don’t know who the Giant Muncher or Muncher King are, but they know they are part of the team).
Panser (Wild Child)
Starts as part of Team Bowser. At the beginning of the game, they choose a player, if said player dies, the Panser becomes a Muncher.
Nipper Plant (Dog Wolf)
At the beginning of the game, they may choose whether they are part of Team Bowser of Team Muncher.
These are special roles with their own winning condition. They are not considered to be part of Team Bowser nor Team Muncher, unless stated otherwise. If a third party player falls in love, their lover wins with them.
Shy Guy (Pied Piper)
Each night, they may charm two players. All charmed players know who else is charmed. The Shy Guy may not charm themselves. Wins if all other players are either charmed or dead.
Piranha Plant (White Wolf)
Each night, they wake up at the same time as the Munchers and eats with them. Every two nights, they wake up a second time and eat a Muncher. Wins by being the only player alive. Members of team Muncher will see this player as one of them.
Wins if they are executed during the first day. After the first day, they are treated as a Green Koopa and play as part of Team Bowser.
Blue Koopa (Abominable Sectarian)
At the start of the game, the host will divide the players in two groups. Wins with Team Bowser, but only if every player from the group they’re not in are dead.
Fell free to post any questions or suggestions you may have. As stated before, I will moderate the first round.
