Saying one's port is better than the other one doesn't necessarily mean the latter is bad, it's at least inferior.

Specifically saying "X's port sucks" is not stating anything other than you do not like the port, You are not giving any feedback as to why it's bad nor are you saying it's inferior you are clearly stating a singular point.
If you do not see why this is an issue I would recommend you just drop the subject and stop posting "X's port sucks" comments, it's pretty simple.
Agree or not these are the rules moving forward.

also consider: is the new port the proper venue to call out a different one entirely? "better than [author]" only has the mere intent that the new one is good, but all it does in the end is call attention to an older one for being worse, which while is only offensive depending on who you ask, it can still fall under the general behavior rules for what not to do. saying the other one sucks in particular is even worse in this regard, and is just flat out bullying.

besides, if a submission is truly better in every conceivable way over the other, then that's for the mod team's discretion to determine should they choose to remove it as an obsolete submission - not yours. say something respectful or say nothing, that's the key.
It can also go the other way around as well. By saying your submission is better than someone elses, it could be interpreted as "Well, at least it's better than the other one" which basically means yours is only a slight improvement.

Is it fair to compare one's work to another's, while still having it within good spirits? (ie: saying one's good, but another's better [and still recommend both])

Or should comments like those just be left unsaid?

STELLA!
It's safest to say why you like a certain port better than the other one of the same song. If you don't, you can come off as disrespectful of the author of the old version.

You can write something non-comparative such as "If you liked hack X, you should check out hack Y as well".
Just to be clear about everything, it's fine to post a comment on why you feel the newer version or even the older version is better with a clear form of discussion or constructive criticism we really just don't want to have comments that are just "This is better than X's" because they don't bring any value to the sections and just denounce another user.
